Are there any recording artists you just can’t listen too?

For me there is one that has always been top of the list.

Edith Piaf…..l just can’t think of anything worse.

Do not get me wrong and consider my choice is in any way racist….l love to listen to music with songs in any language… Italian, French, Spanish…..

Russian and German can however be extremely demanding, but Edith Piaf (if possible in any language) is a potential harrowing experience.

Do any others on here have a similar artist, or artists that can trigger the same physical reaction?

mylogic

Yes, too many to list but anything Rap, I will not bother with, same thing for Pop music.

We are all different in our musical tastes, which keeps things interesting. I really like Piaf and rap music, but just can't suffer the jazz lite vocalists, Krall, Barber, Monheit, Cole, etc.

Any of those old has-been rockers (who were never truly that good in their "prime") who grunt like pigs and play bang-away on their out of tune guitars . . . Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, etc.

Most Dylan from the last 40 years, and any REO Speedwagon or Aerosmith after the Rocks disc, which is actually great. Those are the first that come to mind.

Funny story in this regard.  My Maine Coon cat, Ben, lived to be 18 years old.  He would sit and attentively listen to music with me by the hour, his head moving back and forth, ears perking up responsively etc., but he would consistently leave the room if he heard Rod Stewart.  This was not a one time thing either, as a favorite FM radio station featured American Song Book once a week and for a while Rod was a popular featured artist.  Ben left in disgust every time.  In his defense he really preferred classical music.

Bruce Springsteen. He can't sing and he can't play guitar either. I know, I  know everyone loves him. I can't even consider him as a vocalist. Horrible.

*sigh*    But....this reminds me of an 'interesting' time in this life that I revisit now 'n again.... Big Eyed Beans From Venus ...and will continue to... ;)

But on Saturday ( 84 deg. ..damn! 😍 ) I'll channel this at My Local Demo.

I'm not Irish....but I can get noisy and pissed just as much. ;)

C'ya Outside.

@billstevenson ,

Your Maine Coon had good taste.

And +2 on Springsteen. Never understood what all the hub bub was about.

@billstevenson - I had a cat with excellent musical tastes as well. He’d get pissed if I turned it up too loud but he loved to jam if the volume was reasonable. He was also a critic of my feeble guitar playing and could always tell if my guitar was out of tune but as I started to improve he became my #1 fan. I miss Scott - he was such a gentle soul.

Bruce +3
The darling of Stereophile critics, Joanna Newsom.  I've tried several times to listen to her but I tap out after 15 seconds.

@jdpalmer1 ,

Just popped on and heard a Joanna Newsome song/video for the first time.

Don’t think I lasted 10 seconds.

Tori Amos. Her depressing, whiny tone gets under my skin real fast. Never bothered to listen long enough, maybe her lyrics are good?

@billstevenson

’’Funny story in this regard’’

Your Rod Stewart comments….

Yes he’s nearly cringe-worthy for me too. Started off good but is now past his ‘use before’ date.

My Rod Stewart (in the UK) story:-

He sat next to me at a concert of The Tornados in about 2010. He was very charming after he sat down and apologised for him and his friend having had a few too many drinks earlier. True to form he jumped up twice to the loo during the two supporting acts. He apologised again in the interval and said, ‘It is an age thing’’ He didn’t mind me calling him Rod and l introduced him to my partner (you will know why later) and he signed a few autographs from fans sitting near him.
After the concert he was waiting for his lift outside. I said hello again and asked him if he still owned his hotel in Torquay. He said he had sold it adding, ‘’Didn’t fool you did l’’ My partner was astonished as she didn’t realise l was playing her too and enjoying the whole scenario.

He was a dead ringer, short with spiked hair, wrinkles, wearing the customary white jacket and even talked Rods local accent. He just loved acting up the role.

Yes some old singers do not know when to quietly fade away….

ideally like the end of one of their tracks.

Rap, in general. And Miles Davis. Don’t know if he was a unique flavor of jazz or not. I like Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock.

I like Miles but that muted trumpet ... I am astonished he found it musical ...

Sounds horrible to me

Although I agree with the dopey hair bands being bad, most of these lists suggest what is preferred is listening to pretty sounds with little genuine meaning or artistry.

@hilde45

William Shatner

Remember….Jim’s music could be considered…..out of this world

It maybe should stay there?

Now that is just ‘go to hell’ plain logical!

Abbey Lincoln is an acquired taste, I encourage everyone to try again, this is my favorite:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Gotta_Pay_the_Band

you can go from, 'she can't even sing' to 'oh my god, she's the best ever!'

James Taylor, who if not favored by family connections, an ingratiating personality, and lucky timing (a cultural moment of stunning vapidity -- "I'm OK, You're OK;" "Johnathan Livingston Seagull;" "Love Story" -- "Fire and Rain" was of a piece) would have become the summer camp music director he was born to be.
Can't write, can't play, can't sing, which alone would make him merely uninteresting, but best known for cluelessly eviscerating dozens of fine-to-magnificent songs earlier recorded, profoundly and definitively, by REAL artists. "Covers," which ought to have been called "Eviscerations," is unlistenable not just because the arrangements and vocals suck so badly, but because they are full-bore desecrations.

Shoe Gaze, Death Folk, Opera (that's a shame but oh well), most Hippity Hop, most pop although occasionally something squeaks through somewhere. Although in my many decades as a musician I've never been a jazz player, that's pretty much 90% of my listening with a seemingly endless jazz trio obsession. Kjetil Mulelid anybody?

Can't think of one off hand, pretty difficult to find an artists devoid of at least one song I may like. I guess Captain Beefheart closest thing, the guy is a phony and treated his band mates terribly.

This thread progressed about as expected after reading the title. Looks like a lot of folks listen to audio show type music, which is a little sad.. Not all of any kind of music is "bad".

No name calling here.  I go through Qobuz new music each Friday, usually 12 to 18 new albums, trying anything that looks interesting.  Maybe 14 out of fifteen don't deserve to be played twice. Ditto for the playlists.  Once in a while though, I strike gold.

here’s another Springsteen vote - first thing that popped into my head - believe he’s been mentioned the most.

Also vote on RAP - except the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight, too many memories with that one to hate.

All Country sucks!

Why?  Can't we all just enjoy music without calling out each others' tastes?

As the OP for this post it was never an intention to ridicule anyones musical taste.

l think most music lovers have many tastes and their collections or preferences encumpass numerous styles. No offence should be garnered by listing a disliked or a liked performer. The attitude on here should be just light hearted and no more than say a taste in food….much like a take-away meal menu. I would not criticise someone who chose a meal that l hated.

Keep it sensible and if you care to, support your comments with reasons why. I for one find it interesting to here what others think about music artists. It is even more enjoyable to here reasons for these choices and quite entertaining.

FOOT NOTE

As regards my own dislike of Edith Piaf, it does not only extend to the musical style but also the look…l can’t bare to watch her either.

At least as interesting as what people enjoy is what they don’t enjoy. It says much more about us than it does about the music.

Interestingly I agree with everyone so far - with exceptions for rap and shoegaze, which I both like.

I'm totally baffled about the Piaf / racist juxtaposition in the original post though. The woman was whiter than Casper the ghost.

@devinplombier

Casper the Lonely Ghost

Just to clarify and to be transparent.

Racist can be nationality as well as colour. Being English and choosing a French singer could have implied that. The 19th Century wars are over and we are Euro friends now.

Just to say, l like Quincy Jones. His jazz film soundtrack arrangements were always so musically colourful…….The Running Man, In Cold Blood, They Call me Mister Tibbs…..

Toby Keith--absolutely devoid of musical talent and ability to write lyrics.

@mapman I saw a Dave Matthews Band bumper sticker (DMB), and I realized that it was just a vowel away from spelling "dumb"
