The Grateful Dead. Although my musical tastes have changed over the years, I still can't stand them.
Are there any recording artists you just can’t listen too?
For me there is one that has always been top of the list.
Edith Piaf…..l just can’t think of anything worse.
Do not get me wrong and consider my choice is in any way racist….l love to listen to music with songs in any language… Italian, French, Spanish…..
Russian and German can however be extremely demanding, but Edith Piaf (if possible in any language) is a potential harrowing experience.
Do any others on here have a similar artist, or artists that can trigger the same physical reaction?
Any of the "bubblegum" bands & music in the day would make me cringe, along with the Carpenters, Cowsills, Osmonds, etc. Vocalists for AC/DC, and other "screech" bands don't do it for me either. I'm left puzzled by the attack on James Taylor's instrumental prowess...forget the later, grating sappy songs...the man can play; methinks family dynamics are in the mix here. At the end of the day I'm always reminded of the timeless Sly lyric: "different strokes for different folks".

Come on down to my gym and listen to the um, music broadcast in there. Literally obscene and I was a sailor. Someone might call it music. I call it insulting and degrading to people. There was a movie called "Tough Guys" with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. A specific scene comes to mind. And I don't use earbuds as they suck and I like to listen to myself puff and wheeze ;) |
Wow, great question... A. I was astonished how bad Prince's music is. I played Purple Rain, and without disclosing the title or artist, my wife yelled from the kitchen "Make It Stop!". Normally she is very tolerant, even engaged. B. Diana (makes my skin) Krall C. most Dylan D. the queen of it all - Ono Yoko ;-) there are others, but until another time. Funny stuff.... Thanks! |
Dylan, Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Prince, Miles Davis, The Beatles? Well, I guess there's no accounting for taste. I think with some of the Springsteen haters, it's political. It's hard for me to imagine someone not being moved by the songs on The Wild and The Innocent, or Born To Run. Watch the Hammersmith Odeon concert from 1975, or concert footage from 1978, when he was in his 20s, and let me know who's a better performer than that. |
Back in the ’90s I heard a Sarah McLachlan cover of Solsbury Hill on the public radio station I listened to back then and I thought it had a neat sound so being a bit OCD I went out and bought a whole crapload of Sarah McLachlan CDs. She has a very nice voice, but basically most of those songs sound the same to me. I guess it’s not that I cannot listen to her, but I don’t feel any desire to. CCR: another group I have two (theoretically "audiophile quality") CDs and I cannot tell you why. For the most part I would now put The Doors in that category as well, including the two DCC CDs by them I have. |
@thecarpathian , I guess Life Goes On. . . . |
Post removed |
@stuartk Let's just say that if Taylor can play, I have never heard him do it, nor heard him credibly accused of having done it. |
Official…. @thecarpathian was right! We are indeed entering ‘’The Twilight Zone’’ Da Da Da daH Da Da Da daH. This debate can not be accused of being dull or not having some bright answers. Seriously though, there are a number of repetitive names appearing. Strangely some are not surprising to me….l had wondered until now if it was just me being too critical or intolerant. Who knows….perhaps this post may be in danger of topping the charts this weekend? |
All pop country and the rest of pop, utter crap! So many have horrid voices then the added effects make them much worse, not better then add in the brain dead lyrics and what they call a band, or not....makes me feel sad for the ones not well formed enough to know what real music is. The worst voices are the ones that sound like munchkins. Rick |
Uh, wait for what? Wait for Godot? Wait a table? But seriously, I don't understand why a gravelly voice like Tom Waits or the nasal voice of Bob Dylan dispels so many. I once had a friend who boasted of his pitch perfect singing voice (which he did not really have), loved CSN&Y for their beautiful harmonies, and loved to express his hatred for Bob Dylan's nasal voice. Well guess what, I find CSN&Y incredibly boring. Bob Dylan is quoted often for things he probably did not really say, but one of those quotes is along the lines of "I can do more with my limited voice than most singers can do with their perfect voices" and he was right. Let me also say this-flaws add character. Perfection is often boring. Donald Fagen of Steely Dan pretty much ruined most of Steely Dan's best records by seeking perfection in the studio. Without a few rough edges here and there the sound is lackluster. Just my thoughts. Lou Reed was hardly a great singer but his recordings have withstood the test of time. Same with Iggy Pop and countless others. |
@dayglow I'd more than suggest at least some of the dislikes based on political views. While I find Kid Rock insufferable have to admit I liked a few of his songs prior to knowing his political affiliation or world views. I wasn't much of a Bruce Springsteen fan back in the day, have come to appreciate him more over time. How about Lee Greenwood, someone's fav, my least fav. |
A like, no lie... Dire Straits & M. Knopfler afterwards until distracted yet again.... Once posted the lyrics elsewhere to another Post/posteraddict of Industrial Disease. He’d not heard it (how?!), asked if I’d wrote it. The Bug kinda encapsulates the rest... ;) One has to pick their own version of entropy... ;) If I don’t like ’it’....I don’t repeat the experience. Goes for nearly anything that vibrates the air one’s standing in...all that makes it do that is of the same level of expectation. A Legs remix by the AON captures some little details within a ’space’ (early very fan)... I enjoy hearing ’playing a round with sound’ ....and they’ve got history.... The Art Of Debussy continues a ’fascination’ they’ve had a a group, the album The Seduction of Claude Debussy is where they ’deep-ended’ themselves... Until, well. The Art. Not to everyone’s taste, but a fantastic workout for the drivers. Everything nearly all at once...👍😏 ....and Then there’s that which I just like to play loud....by FBS, master of the live mix... I mean LOUD. Are You Ready? 🤷♂️👏😆🎶👍😎

I'm going to throw in the current whatever genre it is that plays in many stores and restaurants today. I'm talking about the stuff where it's impossible to tell one nerve grating singer from another and they all seem to like singing through a voice warbling synthesizer about nonsense that doesn't seem to even have a theme to it. |
Hi l’m reading through the nights postings this morning in the UK Can l say thank you to all who have taken the time and interest in the subject. There have been so many amusing and interesting comments that had me chuckling to myself. My partner wondered what l was up to while having coffee. I had to read some of them out. She even put in her pet hate with some of the music l listen too. Ennio Morricone and his 60s and 70s experimental horror, thriller, psychedelic, avant-garde style soundtracks. Now l have to agree with her on this point as so much of it can be impenetrable and discordant taken out of context with the films…..an unexpected assault on the ear drums for an unprepared listener. Not intended as a thumbs down on this artist but a valid point for the uninitiated. |
I’m with you on Springsteen. My ex-wife was a YUGE fan of his and dragged me to a show in Munich in ‘82 (?) at the Olympiahalle. About one hour into it I fell asleep. To this day I’m STILL surprised Roger McGuinn hasn’t sued him over stealing the tune from “Chestnut Mare” to make “Born to Run” after all those other lawsuits won with thinner proof and voir dire juries of tone-deaf public eduction victims it would be a clear win for him. |
‘’What’s the point of this question’’ To promote an opinion or answer. Congratulations, you have understood the point. The comments may be negative, but the replies have been pretty positive. This post has just reached the top position in the ‘’Recently Popular’’ menu visible in the UK for Saturday with approaching 1500 views and 100 posts. All this in 30 hours. This is my first discussion posted so l rest my case for thinking this was an interesting subject for others who wish to add and debate. |
Joanna Newsome, Regina Spektor and anything with boogie-woogie piano. Since most of the debating is about not liking popular and/or revered artists, my pick in that category would be Paul Simon (solo albums only). His solo stuff has always rubbed me the wrong way. I've got a couple of friends who feel the same way about Steely Dan, who I happen to like a lot. It just goes to show how different that we can be sometimes, which I find interesting.

If this was about what CONCERTS to avoid, it would be Dave. I like a lot of the music, so decided to go. There are crowds of friends talking loudly and not even watching. Then, on cue, they all turn and recite the refrains yelling Ioudly. After, they return to talking and not watching or listening. You could not even hear the good parts, of which there are many. BTW, I LOVE ‘Cortez the Killer’ live in NY w Warren Haynes. Good things the mikes are in front of most of the crowd! |
It's unusul, but I have to agree with @thecarpathian on this one and wonder why these ladies would need an athletic supporter. I can only assume @spin4cards is implying that there was some . . . um . . . . "gender-bending" going on here? I cannot say that their singing did/does anything for me, but I, for one, certainly don't hold any of those "gender choices" that are implied against them. |
Wy yes, @spin4cards ; yes I have. |
@spin4cards original post + @immatthewj ’’gender choices’’
This went way over my head. I will have to look into this one….or peer into the jock strap to confirm? |
