@stuartk Sorry, I didn't notice that you wanted to extend the topic. Let's view it through this lens: for "singer-songwriter-self-accompanists," the baseline is necessarily below the Mark Knopfler level -- let's say the Jim Croce level. Croce's playing is adequate to support his intricate lyrics, melodies, chromatics, but still he is not thought of as a guitarist per se. Given that Taylor's lyrics are insipid, vacuous, and/or pretentious, his melodies elementary, three-chord stuff, and his one-octave voice thin and reedy, he would need to be a Knopfler-level guitarist to merit my listening. Actually, juxtaposition with Knopfler is another good lens, given that Taylor sings the part of Charles Mason in Knopfler's "Sailing to Philadelphia," which is 100 times better than anything Taylor could ever conceive. Knopfler would be famous for guitar work even if he never wrote or sang anything. Who, I wonder, would make such a claim for Taylor? Nobody I ever heard of.
Are there any recording artists you just can’t listen too?
For me there is one that has always been top of the list.
Edith Piaf…..l just can’t think of anything worse.
Do not get me wrong and consider my choice is in any way racist….l love to listen to music with songs in any language… Italian, French, Spanish…..
Russian and German can however be extremely demanding, but Edith Piaf (if possible in any language) is a potential harrowing experience.
Do any others on here have a similar artist, or artists that can trigger the same physical reaction?
Can you imagine how great The Traveling Wilburys would have been if Bob Dylan would have hired Bruce Springsteen instead of that Harrison guy? Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen--two of the greatest and most creative artists to ever bless a studio or a stage!!! The Beatles may have thought that they were more popular than God, but Bruce is The Boss! BRUUUUCCCEEE!!!!!! |
"In orthodox Christian belief, Jesus Christ is considered both fully God and fully human, with the concept of the hypostatic union stating that Jesus is one person with two natures, divine and human, existing simultaneously" |
I do not find that surprising, @texasblues1959 . |
The Jesus thing and all the fallout in the States. Thank you both for posting all the facts on the matter. The only thing l can add is that John said his comments were taken out of context. What he did admit to saying was……to some people we (The Beatles) are more important than Jesus. He did not say he believed they were. He was talking to a reporter about ‘Beatle Hysteria’ experienced when the group landed in America for their first concerts, and his views on the then new phenomena. |
I wasn’t paying attention to The Beatles back then, @mylogic , so I cannot say that I actually heard the quote from John Lennon’s mouth, but this is the first hit that came up when I did a google: "In a 1966 interview, John Lennon famously stated, "We’re more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first -- rock ’n’ roll or Christianity," sparking controversy and media attention. " However I do not personally know if this is an accurate quote or not. |

Incontinence is not a sin, @mylogic . Hopefully he has caregivers to change his adult diapers on a regular basis. |
Johns quotes l was speaking of a recorded black and white video (in America) of John on a Beatles documentory. There was a lot of discord and there were a lot of people including the church goers saying they should be thrown out of America. He did say it as l quoted and was trying to put the record straight on what he actually meant. He could of course have been back tracking on the video l’m quoting and was trying to justify what was said earlier. |
@mylogic , I cannot argue with you because I did not see that documentary or actually hear that quote (or very many others by John Lennon). The last copy & paste I did came from AI and this one that I am about to paste is from Wiki. But again, if you heard the quote, I will not argue the point. "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that; I’m right and I’ll be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first – rock ’n’ roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me."[4][12] |
Unless I am missing something, @sns , I don’t think anyone has said that the quote in question was that The Beatles were ’greater’ than Jesus . . . hasn’t every quote (or possible misquote) so far pertained to popularity? |
It is an absolute certainty that He would have been a fan of Bruce and Dylan. He would have been so much a fan that he would not have even bothered to listen to any of the other drivel that some call music. |
From the site that the above links to: "The Bible directly states that Jesus is God in a number of passages.[1]"
|
|
"Jesus Christ Himself claimed deity. He taught His disciples to pray in His name.[11] He claimed that He and the Father were one and that He was the Son of God.[12] He claimed that to know Him was to know God, to see Him was to see God, to receive Him was to receive God, to believe Him was to believe in God and to honor Him was to honor God, while to hate Him was to hate God.[13]" He claimed that He and the Father were one

What John said after he said it, and what he claims he really meant…… August 11. 1966 before some concert dates in America.
John explains his US comments and earlier published reports by a British journalist (l believe was Maureen Cleave) in a filmed interview with the other 3 present. ’’We meant more to kids than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn’t knocking it or putting it down. I was just saying it as a fact, and it is true more of England than here. I’m not saying we are greater or better or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. I said what l said and it was wrong or was taken wrong and now it’s all this”
l never expected this post to go down a religious path, so maybe now we will get back to basics and leave these episodes in the history books. |
@immatthewj Bruce is a snowflake. Not triggered I just turn his chit off. |
@immatthewj you are off your meds. Queen is the most underrated band out there, maybe next to ELO. They could do anything, any genre, and they were very methodical and brilliant about their direction and all of their albums. |
@texasblues1959 how is that relevant about his music. It's a subjective statement anyway, if you say he is a snowflake, it means to me he is cool. |
Is that before or after you urinate in your pants, @texasblues1959 ? |
Thanks for that, @mylogic , and I am sure that we can all now agree that God has chosen Bruce to be His voice to speak to the masses. |
@immatthewj Neither, you are how old? 12? |
Just asking, @texasblues1959 , as you did imply a few posts ago that you had some issues with urinary incontinence. I am sure you cannot help it and I hope that no one judges you for that. But back to the OP, I was intrigued by the ‘Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska: A Celebration in Words and Music’ as there were some pretty good artists paying tribute to The Boss by covering him, but when they allowed Lyle Lovett to do a cover . . . yuk . . . and if one cover by LL wasn’t bad enough . . . they let him do TWO covers! YUK!! Totally ruined that one. |
