Something on top of a speaker=okay?

We have a (toy) stuffed dog laying on top of one of our floorstanding speakers. Does this affect the sound?

Do I need to find an identical breed of stuffed dog to put on the other speaker to maintain balance? Does it matter if it's a dog, an elephant or a cute bunny? What about the color? We can dye the dog's fur if that improves the soundstage.

I have a stuffed frog on one of my speakers and the sound doesn’t jump around at all.

I suspected that the stuffing was important. Perhaps I could keep my stash of stolen loose diamonds elsewhere. Maybe I should try cornflakes?

R2D2 and Marvin the Martian say yes it is okay. If it is okay with them, it is okay with me.

I have a 10lb weight on top of each of my speakers. Definitely makes a difference.

Best way to know is experimenting. Try with and without and also move it to the other channel. And try different music before you draw a conclusion. In my opinion, yes it will make a difference, but is that difference an improvement? Your ears are the final judge.

Good luck

I don't know.  I might be concerned with the taxidermy chemicals being bad for the drivers.

And my posting asking if the air pressure in the listening room makes a difference got deleted?

No, something small and light won’t make and difference and neither will a little cat and dog hair on the grills.

I keep mine symmetrical. One has a moon globe on it, the other a Mars globe that are both 12" in diameter. Seriously, I don't think anything on top of the speaker matters all that much as long as it doesn't overhang the front baffle or resonate at any frequency. YMMV. (I did put some rubber bumpers under those globes stands just for the heck of it).

@ibmjunkman regarding air pressure, probably not at the slight natural range of pressure differences here on Earth. However, long ago on Skylab (1973-1974), where they kept the pressure at 5 psi of pure oxygen, the sound attenuated quickly, causing the astronauts to have to yell at others located at the other end of the thing where the Apollo Telescope Mount controls were located. I think studies were done on frequencies lost (mostly the highs) from the low pressure.

Today though, the ISS keeps its pressure identical to Earth’s sea level, so they don’t have to contend with that.

I would wonder if the relative humidity would make a difference and whether that difference was audible?

To effect the sound good way the dog has to be at least 30-50lb of weight:)))) in some setups heavy weights on top of the speakers could help fighting vibrations and stabilise the speakers. Probably it could be useful if the speakers are too light or the floors are too curvy.

Batteries on the cables! I got it all wrong. I thought you put them on top of the speakers. Geesh , now I can get those car batteries off the speakers. My wife will be so pleased.

I have dust on top of my speakers. From time to time I use a leaf blower to remove it. This also helps rearrange the room. It’s very important not to point the blower up as that could rip down some of the tin foil on the ceiling.

Cables? My learning disability has me going through a series of trials using tables, stables, and gables. I fell off the roof twice trying to utilize the latter. Now, I’m trying to get a handle on whether to put girls in front of the baffles or leave them there. So far, my girls have not been particularly cooperative around this endeavor.

The dust is essential to the highest quality of audiophile sound. see the 148 posts about this on this site. (Search:all threads even sillier than this one ) Without the dust, the area on top of the speaker doesn’t vibrate properly to bring out the highest frequencies.

Dust is not a problem here. Under renovation in my house. I wondered why my speakers high freq sounded so much better. No more dusting for me!!!

Peanut butter around the rim of woofers gets vermin to nibble on the cones and create patterns that promote "natural" sounding bass. If you don't remove the grilles first, you eliminate rodents, which limits the effect. Insects are neither as smart nor as helpful.

Totem and Mapleshade recommend something on top, I think Totem's is called the Beak...certainly an easy self test, but can't imagine the stuffed animal helping your sound...

Good one. That’s actually an interesting topic, so try and re-post it.

I won't buy speakers that don't have a flat top.  Too convenient for stacking stuff on top of.

If you want to put stuffed animals on your speakers you absolutely need to measure them for size down to a couple thousandths of an inch and weight to 1mg otherwise your soundstage will be total crap 💩.

I guarantee that one of the better-known members of this Forum will swear up and down that the sound will improve if you put Purple or Orange Fuses in the stuffed animal. The sound improvement will be quantum leaps ahead of the current sound imaging. And the background will be blacker.

The only way to counter the negative effects of the stuffed animals is to put Townshend pods underneath them.

I don’t place anything on my speakers. I can’t understand why people do. It’s not a plant stand for gosh sakes.

I apologize for having two small bronzes on my speakers that are not symmetrical.

Funny how all the words come out whichever speaker I set her on...

(that's a joke)

As long as the dog is stuffed with Owens-Corning 703...

Unless one paw is hanging down in front of the tweeter, I can't see how it can make a difference.

Raw meat does provide some cabinet resonance dampening, but I've found it rots and gets smelly pretty fast so you have to change it frequently.

Before I settled on the stuffed animal on my speaker, I experimented with pizza slices. Interestingly, the sound was completely dependent on what toppings were on the pizza.

In all seriousness, I do have a frog on my speaker.

IIRC, Tom Gillette fka Sam Tellig once suggested readers try three pennies. It was mostly tongue in cheek that at a cost of six cents coming out of your personal liquidity, why not? I felt silly doing it but tried it. Back then I had B&W M805's with JPS Labs Golden Flutes equalizers in line between amp and speakers. I had lead and sand filled 100lb speaker stands. My amp was a McCormack DNA.5 "Full Monty" and my preamp was an Audioprism Mantissa. I heard a difference of exactly de nada. Bupkis.

If someone tells me how, I’ll post a photo of the dog that got all this started. “Pupper” is by far the most mellow, well-behaved pet I have ever had. I guess he has the advantage of being inanimate.

I like that frog.

The only way I could find to post photos was to register at a site that can serve as an address for them so you can post them in the URL box when clicking on the square landscape image from above.

The site I use is imgpile.com and it’s free to register with and there seems to be no limit as to how many images you can upload, just the size of them. It’s pretty much self explanatory and fun to use.

When selecting which image to use, just right click on it and choose copy image address and then paste it in A'gon's URL box after clicking on the above icon mentioned.

All the best,

Thanks, nonoise. That’s good to know.

I suspect I’m too lazy to go to that much trouble.
