Female vocalist recommendations

My morning routine starts at 530/am. Light breakfast, and my morning tea.

I then power up my audio system and listen to my morning favorites.

I love soothing female vocalists at this time of the morning.

Here are some of my favorites- Norah Jones-Jacintha-Abigail Lapell-Amber Rubarth-Anette Askvik-Margo Timmins-etc

I'm really looking for some other recommendations by the great minds on Agon.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated....and great recordings are a bonus.

Thanks in advance.

I’m an early listener as well. The Breath and their Acoustic album is pretty nice.

Tierney Sutton, start with Dancing in the Dark, great album.  All of the Ella Sings... Songbooks by Ella Fitzgerald, the Queen.

Natalie Merchant "Tigerlily"

Linda Ronstadt "Heart Like A Wheel"

Patsy Cline "Greatest Hits"

Joni Mitchell "Blue"

Erin Bode, Over and Over

Julie London

Hank Dogs, Bareback

Cassandra Wilson, New Moon Daughter

And the absolutely beautiful Anne Hills. Start with Angle of the Light

- Maria Muldaur: s/t (Reprise Records).

- Lucinda Williams: anything. Try her album West.

- Dusty Springfield: Dusty In Memphis.

@roxy54 thanks for the October project suggestion. I never heard of them before, which kind of surprises me, but they’re right up my alley. Kind of remind me of a cross between All About Eve and Fairport convention

Great suggestions already, I'll add Mazzy Star, Rickie Lee Jones (the acoustic one if you need it to be totally mellow), Lucinda Williams, Lindi Ortega, Kelsea Ballerini, Phoebe Bridgers, Caitlin Canty, someone already mentioned Amber Rubarth and Natalie Merchant,  but +1 on those.

Let us know what you thought of all these recommendations.

Eilen Jewel, one of the best talents no one has heard. Excellent band ( Jerry Miller is her guitarist ), and her recordings are all very good. Beautiful voice that covers jazz, country, blues ,rock.... Hard to pigeon hole, probably why she isn’t mainstream. If you try one new artist this year......

On weekends I am also a member of the Super Early Listening Club (SELC), starting at 3:30 - 4:00 AM. The power grid is better then.

You should try Kate Wolf, Kathleen Edwards, and Nancy Griffith. All are more toward the folk/bluegrass/country range.

Good listening!!

Jim Perry

Jennifer Warnes (Famous Blue Raincoat), Sara Bareilles (don't know her albums, but stunning voice), Sade (Diamond Life), Kathleen Edwards (Asking for Flowers, Voyageur).

Take a listen to Dominique Fils-Aimé, her song Birds is one of my audition songs.

I never get tired of Billie Holiday.

Sarah Vaughn and Clifford Brown is a great, great recording.

Ella Fitz is good as well.

@curtisvill +1 on Dominque Fils-Aime. beautiful voice and arresting songwriting.

@kb54 That Kathleen Edwards title should have garnered way more attention than it did when it was released.

My two favorites.....Mary Black and Jennifer Warnes. Mary Black has a large catalog of great Irish-influenced music. No Frontiers, Babes in the Wood, The Holy Ground, Without the Fanfare and By the Time it Gets dark are favorites.  Jennifer Warnes has a large catalog as well, with some of her lesser known, The Hunter, The Well, Another Time, Another Place, some of her most enjoyable in my opinion.

Automatically pops up in my mind Julie London.

She is all times world champ on female voice

Check also out Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Françoise Hardy

Kate Bush

Sonja Kristina

For what it's worth since this is about the zillionth time this has been discussed.

Enjoy whoever is your cup of tea is my advice.

H.C.McEntire flips my trigger lately.

Laura Veirs

Amy Helm

K. D. Lang

Sophia Pfister

Rosanne Cash

Lots of great names listed above.  One I didn’t see was Monica Zetterlund.  Start with Ahh! Monica! and if you like what you hear (you will) move on to Swedish Sensation and others.

What about Katie Melua, No 8. Album or The house. Refreshing!

My all time favorite remains Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat and Nathalie Merchant Ophelia. Hope they make a vinyl of that one sooner than later.

Happy listening!

Lana Del Rey

Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries)

Karen Jonas (way underappreciated and for the time being pretty unknown). Start off with the track: butter

Sylvan Esso- electro pop. Try sunburn off of her new album. No rules Sandy.

US Girls

Julia Jacklin

Samia

Phoebe Bridgers

And above all: Ashley Monroe. Try Like a Rose, one of her earlier songs. Then move on to: the Blade, Sparrow, and Rosegold

Eva Cassidy - Nightbird

Lyn Stanley - London Calling

Diana Panton - If The Moon Turns Green

Stacey Kent - Dreamer in Concert

Chantal Chamberland - This is Our Time

Jocelyn B Smith - My Way (Adagio is a great song on this album)

Try Imelda May, I listen to her a lot. She writes most of her own music and has a wide range of style. Watch her and Jeff Beck do Walking in the Sand on youtube.

Lee Aaron.

earlier is hard rock.

player is rock, blues, jazz.

great,voice,

@elliottbnewcombjr

Thank you.  Joan Baez tucked away amongst 49 odd others.

Early Joan had the most pure untrained high soprano voice there ever was.  It rings like a bell.  If you want beauty in a voice, look no further than her very first Vanguard recording.

Oh, I have plenty of Billie, Ella, and so many others we both like I'm sure.

That list is just the ones lying around that I've listened to over the past 3-1/2 months while dealing with/recuperating from a bad infection in the bones of my foot. In/out of hospital, 3 surgeries, 11 weeks on intravenous antibiotics, lost 34 lbs, carried out on a stretcher, rehab, I've been thru the wringer!

"Keep off your feet", it's been a lot of TV or Music!

Piles of lps and cds hither and thither. Should invite friends over for dinner, that would inspire me to put them back in the barn.

You might try reading the thread here "Looking for good recordings of female vocals I have not yet tried". You might be in for a surprise.

Yes, Margo Timmins!  Especially The Trinity Sessions

Rebecca Pidgeon

Ana Caram

Sara K

A little harder...

Pat Benatar

Bonnie Raitt

Taylor Momsen

Amy Lee
