Disagreements and Conflicts between Audiophiles have we lost our brotherhood and maturity?

I looked back over my posts and even my audio business dealings over the last 5 years and it seems like we have lost our ability to peacefully disagree or resolve disputes like grown men. Some of my best friends in this life are audiophiles and I enjoy the gear, the music and the brotherhood. I don’t enjoy the senseless spats. The inability to resolve conflicts and the people trying to destroy peoples business and reputations. Thoughts?

Hi @whart and @tomic601, yes, it must be 4/1 if I'm posting again here. It used to be a daily read and frequent home for me, but I've tired of the more recent nature of things. I'll chime in occasionally.

Days like our visit to your place are what this hobby is about! Looking forward to reciprocating at your leisure...Cheers,

Spencer

There he is. Yep, agreed, @sbank. Getting together is really what it is all about and it goes beyond music or gear.

Just as Alfred says to a questioning Batman:  Some men just want to see the world burn.

Regards,

barts

@barts ....and leave it for us to watch and hopefully endure despite....
The fire ants in HOU were just another thing to leave behind.  The rain and floods were already getting more common, I'd hit the ceiling in terms of who'd be less of pain to work for or with....

Not mentioning getting to There from Here....I 10 has been widened enough for commercial aircraft to land....IF the traffic would bother to Yield....

...and even Then.... (Yeah, LA v HOU....more or less like any other major Shity...

This is where I go bonkers, is when people (I’m being nice) call things snake oil or call people idiots if a cable sounds different. In their view, nothing can sound different if it’s a cable. Ask these same people about speaker footers, room treatments, Bi-wiring, isolation devices for the amp/preamp/dac, it’s all snake oil to them. If you want this kind of nonsense, forward them to ANA, this is all they do over there, it’s quite laughable.

The other thing that bothers me is when somebody recommends something that they have never heard. You can’t read something and then recommend that piece without hearing it and using it. Somebody did this a lot years ago.

I also recommend using a dac interface that I think is better than using usb and there are many dozens of people that claim this is false when 99% of them has never used i2s nor can their equipment support it. IMO, these people are just like the guy that calls everything snake oil.

Yee ha!  I have finally lived long enough to see trickle down come to fruition. Incivility, rancor, sanctimony, greed, short sightedness, cowardice, cruelty and slippery grips on truth flowing like sewage from above to decompose through screens and monitors.

We're in a niche.  It was commonplace when we started buying things.  AVR and Bluetooth took over.  Internet showed up and stores went away.  So did manners.  Not in all cases but more.

Audiogon had much more issues a few years ago.  That's why moderators keep better track by cleaning up posts and users.

@calvinj - well, dayum. Small world. Know Albert Porter? I visit him occasionally and if you are ever in Austin, you are welcome to visit (with a little advance notice) and have a listen here.

Unfortunately technology changed and many audiophiles still do not understand digital, especially modern, Internet based. So people simply don't understand at all.

@whart

@calvinj

I've been on Audiogon since '98, but somehow, I missed why Albert parted ways with Audiogon. Can either of you give me a brief explanation?

@roxy54 - I don't know the answer, not sure we ever talked about it as such, I do know Albert has a great sense of humor and has been through so much history in audio, experimenting and using so much different high end gear while still retaining this down to earth approach to the whole thing that it's hard to say; he relates to pretty much anybody while knowing a huge amount based on decades of experience. To me, (and I'm in my early '70s), Albert is somebody that is still very relevant and could be a huge source of information to participants here. You can probably reach him through the Porterhouse contact; he's generous with his time, and still hosts listening sessions. I always enjoy talking with him.

@roxy @whart

Part of what we are talking about here.  I have had guys try to destroy my character and business over audio opinion disagreements.   I had a guy literally fake everything about himself. Call the owner of the company and make it like I was hurting his business until I busted him in his multiple lies. In addition to that there is the pervasive attitude and bias sometimes against the higher end stuff and folks that own it.  It turns into I’m smarter than you and your equipment is not better than yours you just paid too much like a dummy. Which isn’t the way it actually is. It’s bigger than that.  There is more than just that but people get tired of it. The personal attacks etc from people who actually don’t have a lot of experience sometimes or are dead set on being right and disrespectful

One thing we all do is assume that most people think and act like we do (normal), until we meet them, the real them (abnormal).

 Getting together is really what it is all about

the only thing that's better than getting together with stubborn, arrogant, rich white old men (as I have seen more than a few here) is to not get together with them. Maybe just my bad luck

Be kind guys, senescence will catch up with all of us if we live long enough

For a minute there, I thought you misspelled sentience.
Looks like it caught up with me. 😄

Got it. I am not sure how I am not kind. I could have used harsher words. But our sensitivity varies, I can keep it to myself.

Unless we are debating measurement methods and accuracy, is not everything else is pretty much preferences and opinion… not worth arguing about or debating.

And not worth engaging with those who feel the need to stir the pot.

@snapsc Bingo...👍...but the commentary on 'the subject(s) at hand/screen can still be valuable and desirable...  Whether or not any humor is tagged on the postings do vary.
I'll admit to being a vandal of sorts.... :0

But I like rich old white men. They taste just like chicken.

Us vs them. Sad, stupid and very telling.

I'm a rich old white man (my wife claims I should add "grumpy" to that) and I don't like being disparaged for it. It upsets me and all I can do to calm down is go play with a pile of money or reflect on all my cool stuff...why don't people like me more? ...sigh...

Which one is a bigger sin, being a rich man or being a white man, I wonder ?
