@mglik Measles, polio, hepatitis, etc. Don’t understand why Covid is any different? Over 90% of all Americans have already been vaccinated against measles and polio. Herd immunity already exists. There are only 1,000 - 2,000 cases per year of Hepatitis A (the most contagious form) - whereas there are 150,000 cases of Covid reported each day in the US. Not sure why this is so hard to understand the difference. |

COVID is never going away. We weren’t able to vaccinate away the flu and it used to kill thousands every year (operative =used to). With a 99.7% survival rate, some are willing to take those odds. Don’t denigrate people whose opinion is different than yours. Lets let personal choice win the day since it’s obvious that even the vaccinated are still contracting and passing the virus. So a vaccine it is really not… To stay on topic, everyone enjoy live music whenever you can, no matter your medical history. It’s really none of my business. Oz |
Ozzy, the flu is a different virus every year, much less lethal than Covid 19, and still the vaccination for that saves countless lives. The only reason that people are arguing "personal choice" is politically motivated misinformation. At this point in time, Covid 19 is a pandemic among the unvaccinated. The vaccines have been proven to be safe and prevent serious illness and death. Anyone who doesn't understand that should spend a few hours in a hospital intensive care unit watching doctors and nurses exhaust themselves trying to save people from dying. I don't understand why it's not merely a civic duty to get vaccinated. True patriots were vaccinated months ago. |
After Vaccination: Concerned, not Scared. You can get and spread Covid before symptoms, before you know (or never figure out) that you had it and were spreading it. Any event can become a small or super-spreader. I certainly do not want to be any part in passing the virus to someone else, one or many, I would not go. We went to the Blue Note to see Al Di Meola a few weeks ago, (had accepted the invite months before Delta made things flare up again). The Village was swamped with people, sidewalks narrower than ever, soooo many people without masks. Inside, tables were not spread apart as far as we hoped, luckily we were at the end of the upper level, no other tables adjacent. Servers had to lower their masks to be heard over the music. Talking loud 'in your face' you might say. Hundreds breathing the hours long accumulated air, applauding, shouting appreciation, it definitely could have been a super-spreader event. That was it, we went from cautious normal back to cautious, cautious normal. Then, on Friday, we were informed that a person who we spent 5 minutes talking to the preceding Sunday (in our narrow entry hallway) had tested positive. We had mingled with only family members since then. Except, oh yeah, I got new tires for Donna's car, talked face to face with several employees, then conversed in the small waiting space. IF I passed it to any of them, just one employee or customer: off it goes. And, our family members, all vaccinated, had mixed with ....... We both got rapid testing, two hours, negative, whew. Others who have been around this person say "I've been vaccinated", no biggie, and don't get tested or inform anybody the have been and will be around. I find that so irresponsible. That is scary. |
We just saw Rhiannon Giddens last week. Proof of vaccination required (and checked). And it was an outdoor concert so we felt pretty safe. From her comments, it sounded like this was her first public performance in a long time. And her partner, Francesco Turrisi had a funny story about how difficult it was for him to get a visa. He had to document that he had an extraordinary talent, among other things. |

Look at our numbers from a year ago when no one was vaccinated and compare them to now when almost 60% have the jab. Vaccinated people continue to spread the virus. From the beginning we should have taken care of the elderly and compromised, promoted treatments instead of vaccines and encouraged a healthy lifestyle. But that never happened. Why? I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. The problem I have is that we have been, and continue to be, lied to by the CDC, MSM, and our own government. So I’ll leave you guys at it to believe what you believe. See how that works? I don’t care if you get the jab or wear a mask (or two) for the rest of your life. I have been to 11 live shows from 9/2020 till this week. Hospital grade N95 masks on till I was vaccinated, then off, till middle of July, when it was clear Delta was circulating in my area. The Beacon did a great job not only checking proof of vaccination, for this week's King Crimson concert, but also everyone's IDs to make sure they match the card. So, the risk of having many virus infected people inside the theater was low (there were probably a few though). Combined with a good N95 mask (95% effective) (cloth masks are theater (10-50% eff), surgical masks are made to protect the patient, not the surgeon (70% eff)), I was quite safe. As an MD-PhD scientist with over 40 years of research and clinical experience, with particular experience working on mRNA, I will make a plug for the mRNA vaccines. They are incredible products. Game changers for medicine going forward. They are also super simple at the molecular level. They have less than a dozen components. It's just a piece of mRNA and a mixture of fats that encapsulate it, enabling the mRNA to get inside the cells. As a general rule in medicine, simple has less side effects. As opposed to infection rate what's probably most relevant is the death rate due to Covid compared to that of say the common flu. The death rate due to Covid is between 200-300 people per 100,000 population (it varies state to state a bit). The death rate due to flu most years (like 2019) is about 1.8 people per 100,000 population. So the question really becomes what death rate is acceptable to remove all the covid policies? Below 100 per 100,000? 50? I don't know but at some point it's just a policy decision where we decide can just live with the rate and that the cost of restricting lives is now outweighing the incremental benefit of the policies. We all take risks just being alive every day. |

The question is, "what is our hospital/oxygen/ICU capacity, including the health and well-being of the doctors, nurses and staff, and what % of those capacities do we need to be at to remove all COVID-19 restrictions and mandates?". It's really a health capacity issue, and then secondarily a financial issue. All of us are paying lots of money to treat those that get sick enough to be in the hospital. Folks with heart attacks, car accidents, etc. are paying with poor care due to over-worked staff and not enough beds. It all about ability of our system to deliver care. |
@thecarpathian- not that I recall, though I know the song. I was blown away the first time I heard him---actually probably one of the last shows we went to before Covid. And this was the first show since Covid. So, that is an honor right there, I think. Man, he's a great stage presence-- I usually try to describe him as an American blue-eyed soul guy---band was superb. |
@whart , First time I heard him, I thought I was listening to a black guy just crushing it with some ’bayou soul’. And I mean that in a most complimentary way. I feel singers of African descent seem to intone from a deeper part of their soul, and in general bring an emotionally richer nuance to their songs. I couldn't believe that sound was coming from a young white guy who looks like an extra in a high school football movie.... |
I saw Phish at Dick's Sporting Goods Arena in CO over Labor Day weekend. Proof of vaccination required I wore a mask when in crowded areas otherwise I did not. I would not attend an indoor show currently. And the anti-vaxx crowd needs to stop with the misinformation and distorted facts, it's too late for that garbage. |

I saw Emmylou Harris about a month ago, and a friend and I saw Gary Allan on September 10th. Both were at an outside venue. I am fully vaccinated and attended without a mask and sat near to other people. No problems thus far. I don’t ignore risks but intend to live my life. My area doesn’t require masks in stores or restaurants, so I thought it safe enough at this outdoor arena to go without precautions. Only recently has COVID infections started to rise in my state. I am comfortable with what I do, though I don’t plan to attend any more functions the rest of this year. |

Without doubt,we as Americans all cherish our freedom...past, present, and future...but for that hard fought freedom..it surely always comes at a very high cost! I personally know seven breakthrough cases (I don’t know many people). My doctor knows of ten. One of these was a 18 yo with asthma and was hospitalized for a week. The one death and near death infections were of two unvaccinated people. My partner will get a booster this week. I have not, nor will i soon go unmasked and undistanced. While it is clear the vaccination greatly reduces risk of death. All hospital beds are full… and honestly being sick and or going to the hospital is one of my least favorite things. |
Pre-pandemic, my spouse and I lived in Manhattan, and went frequently to hear live music. Eerily, the last concert we attended was in March 2020 at the NY Phil, where we heard soprano Rene Fleming sing a composition by Bjork . . . entitled "Virus." My wife left at intermission. I stayed for an uninspired Bruckner 4th. I remember walking back to our apartment, on Broadway, one of the world's greatest thoroughfares, on a Saturday night at 10 p.m. For thirty blocks, Broadway was nearly deserted. A harbinger . . . . I knew then the world had changed. |

Rose tattoo ,!!! the Casualties LOUDNESS!!! many of these great shows are scheduled during the week, so, probably will not go, up til usually after 12:00 am, up at 4:00 - 4:14 for work, at my age, it’s manageable, but don’t like it, slightly sluggish at work, and I need my wits and attention to be sharp, I’m a heavy machinery operator, many times working around laborers or other tradesmen, being sharp and aware of my surroundings is paramount. Years ago, it didn’t matter, up til 3-4 am,hammered at the bars, buddies houses, go home, pass out, up at 4-ish or 5 depending on how far the job site was, sometimes, no sleep at all, home, shower, coffee, big breakfast, sober up, massive 16+ oz of V8 spicy w few dashes of pepper, sometimes a shot of vodka in the V8 if needed at 9:30 coffee break. Not all the time, once in a blue moon. Getting old sucks. I hope these bands will be around when I’m older, most will not I’m sure. Been a great ride for me, listening to metal since I was a pre-teen and younger. 8 tracks/cassettes first boom box, first incarnation of what I thought was a wicked stereo, it was for a 15 year old, first stereo was a maroon end of bed 8track/fm/am thick felt unit with two slide in/out soft benches. Was a great first 8track stereo as a 10 year old kid. I remember it, because, I had only a select few 8tracks which played continuous all night while I slept. A few were billy Joel 42nd st. ....Styx grand illusion and paradise theatre,...ac/dc high voltage (us version) Kiss destroyer,...few others which slip my mind, few years later my cousin moved, and gave me his box of 8tracks, I still have toe box in the basement. Wow, can I ramble huh? Anyway, will try to hit the weekend shows! if they want that mask BS, I simply not go. Will call the venue to ask, most wil not do the mask tripe crapola! |
I saw Emmylou Harris about a month ago, Hi bob540, How was the Emmylou concert. I don't think I'd want to see her at this point, her voice is too far gone for me. I know that some people feel that a raspy, weathered voice equals more character, but I'm not one of them. I much prefer the beautiful voice she once had. If others feel differently that's fine with me, though, to each his own. |
What I meant by measles, polio, hepatitis and why is Covid different is that the vast majority of us have been normally getting vaccines for these three and many others for decades and all those and many more have been well under control because it is normal and well accepted to be vaccinated. Why is it that there is so much resistance the Covid vaccine? They were and are hailed as miracles. It is selfish and stupid to not be vaccinated. And why is there so much resistance to such a small and easy thing as wearing a mask? I would love to feel safe to go to live concerts. They were highlights of life. We had such a small window of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Now lost because of Delta and politics. |
Mglik, you're absolutely right. I too would love to go to concerts again, to museums, to the theater, etc. But thanks to the refusal of a substantial portion of the populace to obtain, without charge, vaccines that are safe and largely effective, and to wear masks in public places, these highlights of life, as you aptly put it, are denied many of us, especially older people and those with preexisting health issues. I love live music, but I won't risk my life, or the lives of other human beings, to hear it. And the risk, even to the vaccinated, is not trivial -- it's real. |

Then Rodrigo y Gabriela indoors Then America, the next week indoors That is if none of these shows are canceled due to band or touring support testing positive. I will comply with mask mandates as required. Two football games also - 80k fans Fully vaccinated in April of this year. Will likely get the Booster (and flu shot as usual). Next February Pat Metheny, two indoor shows, two different locations in the same week. Will also attend Warren Hayes Christmas Jam in December this year if they have it. |
This is another good reason why its going to pay off investing in your rig so that in the event you are concerned about catching the new Delta Variant (which is far more contagious and deadly) you are safely at home listening to your system. Concerts are way too risky at this point in time, I had to change my plans as well. |
