"Black Licorice" Grand Funk Railroad
Favorite scream in rock?
Robert Palmer lets rip a tremendous, rolling scream near the end of "Sneakin' Sally." "The fact is ... rrrooOOAAAHHHHH .... JUST BEEN CAUGHT."
What's your favorite scream, shout, or yell? Other than Roger Daltrey's, of course.

Fun thread! Geez too many favs to name just one. Robert Plant/Zep -How many more times -Since I've been loving you -etc Geoff Tate/Queensryche -Queen of the reich -Take hold of the flame -etc. Ian Gillan/Deep Purple -Strange kind of woman -Child in time -etc. But I concur with a few others that Halford takes the cake for me. No other like him! -Dreamer deceiver -Victim of changes -Exciter -etc, etc, etc, etc! Geddy Lee was a great call too. He's got a few, Didacts is short but a fine scream none the less!

Awesome thread. So many great screams/screamers listed here. I need to add one from my youth. Ted Nugent. He was a consummate screamer back in the day - check out Double Live Gonzo. Great example is the track Motor City Madman. If you ever saw him back in the mid 70’s, his shows were a skull-splitting loud, "energetic" relentless assault on the crowd to say the least... He lets out quite a few screams in this 10+ minute ditty, (3:10 mark, 5:08, 5:45 for example), but the crazy one lead-up starts around the 7:36 mark. If you don’t want to play the whole song, play it from there and let it ride. 8:10 mark or so is the one. So, with that context, turn this one up and let ’er rip! |

Heads and shoulders above any and all of the above is Suicide's 1977 classic song Frankie Teardrop. Play at maximum volume And to reassure those who feel disoriented outside the genre boundaries of boomer rock, Bruce Springsteen did cite Frankie Teardrop as an inspiration on his album Nebraska. Enjoy!! |

F. DEEP PURPLE - "Highway Star": Machine Head - 72 I'm pretty sure that this was the song that I drove my parents crazy with while I was in high school; and, that makes perfect sense when you consider that it's a song about sex and fast cars. And, to top it off, the song features screaming guitar, bass, and keyboard solos; plus, one of the ultimate screaming lead singers in Ian Gillian. He is well known for causing parents burst into their child's bedroom and demanding to know "what is all of that screaming about?" |
One of my favorite screams which hasn't been mentioned is in "Going All the Way" by The Squires: https://youtu.be/HoBB0e-dVhc?si=maKR-1Uda24hTS60 This is one of my all-time favorites; I truly, truly love this song, and the fact that it never became a worn-out hit was a tremendous oversight. |
