The best speaker cables you’ve had

Simply put, the best you’ve owned and/or heard.

Downsize Audio 3" wide silver/gold foil speaker cables.

Followed by their 3" wide 7n copper foil cables.

In the past I have tried different brands of

speaker cables and I find Cardas Golden Cross

to be the best until I tried Chen Audio Labs

beautiful sounding from top to bottom needs

time to break in.

@elliottbnewcombjr

Would you mind explaining how you built your Cat8 cables? I would like to try it. Thanks.

KnuKonceptz Karma SS Kable 10 gauge with good quality soldered ends, As good as it gets, with none of that silly magic beans BS burn in time.

Audioquest Audiotruth Dragon -- solid silver; very detailed.

Cardas Golden Cross -- warmer sound; tames brittle highs.  Paired well with Proac 1SC's.

For the money, hard to beat audioquest's type 4. I see no reason to change them out or spend more money. I think I'll buy another set, as they most likely will no longer be available at some point.

I ordered two colors of Cat 8, I needed two pairs of 20 lf, so I ordered 50’ red and 50’ black.

this is a quick find for Cat 8 26awg pure copper, color and length optional. make sure the conductor is pure copper, some are only pure copper connectors. you will cut the connectors off.

you can search harder and find 24 awg or 22 awg. with at least two color choices if you want different colors. IF you use different colored spades or bananas, it doesn’t matter, I just liked the idea.

8 strands 26 awg = 17 awg

...... 24 awg = 15 awg

...... 22 awg = 13 awg.

NOTE: smaller gauge (higher awg#) is more flexible.

.................................................................

make black/red twisted pairs (any color you can find).

NOTE: length will be slightly less after you twist them, that’s why I used 25 lf to make 20 lf. When not expensive it is easy to buy extra and to keep both runs same length even if one speaker is closer. You never know where you might use them in the future, and can easily make shorter.

twist first, then cut length, then strip and add connectors.

short runs, you can twist them, tape every two feet or so, then finish

longer runs, it’s annoying to have to flip long wires, SO, twist a few feet, tension occurs (patient people would flip the length of wire over), I simply tape there; wrap a few feet in opposite direction, (tension goes away), tape, wrap the other direction ....

cut the ends off, strip the wires, add bananas or spades. I like the type with two set screws, also black and red

or bananas with two set screws and pin tightening screws

Interesting thread here.   There are so many brand names that I've never heard of.  Maybe someone can make a chart of cable brand/model names and number of recommendations.  That would be useful 😀

I own a pair of Kimber Kable 12TC in bi-wire configuration, and have been quite happy with it. I'm a fan of Kimber Kable.  Most of my IC cables are from Kimber.  I own both their Hero and Select lines on the IC.

Anyway, I'm currently home trialing 2 different pairs of speaker cables.  At first, I ordered a pair of Bifocal XL from Kimber direct, and I really like the spacious soundstage, and deeper bass comparing to my 12TC.   After a couple of weeks, I saw a pair of Shunyata Venom-X bi-wire on sale in MusicDirect at an "Open Box" discount.   So I bought it and take advantage of their 60 days home trial.   The Venom-X does not have as large and spacious sound stage comparing to the Bifocal, but it has great and tight bass that I really like.

I'm having a little difficulty deciding which one to keep,  I'm leaning slightly towards the Shunyata Venom-X because of the beautiful bass, but I also like the Kimber Bifocal's spacious and laid back sound stage.  Also the Venom-X is $1000 cheaper in MSRP, which I can use towards the Venom-X power cord.  I've read mostly positive comments on Shunyata's power products, and I'm curious to give their PC a try.

I still have a couple of weeks to decide which one to keep.  Anyway, any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

LessLoss Entropic..  A far more musical reproduction than a 20k pair of Synergistic Research Galileo I was using.. full loom in the near future.

Recently installed Anticables Flex 4.2 Bi Wire speaker cables just to try one more time to improve my sound after a 40 year history of owning and experimenting with just about every type of cable design available. Cost no object to extreme value…extreme technology to simplest design, ultra pure to off the spool hardware store offerings. All I can say is that you must experience the Anticables Flex 4.2 cables in your system for two very good reasons…a hassle free 30 day trial period so there is no price pressure to effect your evaluation of the cables in YOUR system. Secondly, they will most likely re define what you thought was the most stunningly realistic musical connection you have ever heard! They defy criticism and completely suspend that critical part of the audiophile brain that seems compelled to find fault with even the deepest biases and securely held beliefs we have fused into our auditory DNA. The Flex 4.2 cables will completely immerse you and infuse your aural soul with that special thrill and sense of childlike wonder you once felt…that feeling of discovery and utter satisfaction you had when you first experienced true Hi Fidelity Sound. Music becomes so intensely beautiful and pure, so vividly seductive and corporeal, that all artifice is removed and what is rendered before you is pure auditory ecstasy! Everything just snaps into place in all the right measures to create a totally authentic and immersive experience that even my jaded ears thought was impossible to obtain. I am gobsmacked and I am at peace ☮️

From a lot of recent personal experience- there is no ONE best cable. Highly system dependent

To some degree a system may favor a certain type of cable…or may be compensating for very aspects of its performance, or lack thereof.

None.

I spent this winter on a failed (lower cost) speaker cable mission. Tried the following:

- Blue Jeans 12 AWG - my existing wires

- Mogami 3103 - dark, slow

- Kimber 8TC - nice-ish mids and highs, light on the bass

- (Near)dost Valhalla 7N - Similar to Kimber

I returned to my BJC's for now. They sound good, but I am sure I could do better.

One difference with the BJC's is they have locking bananas on the amp end, spades on the speaker end, i.e. a very firm connection on both ends. All the other cables I tested were either standard spring metal bananas or BFA bananas.

When I had Atma-Sphere M60 mono amps sitting directly behind Quad ESLs I had Kimber make me up a pair of 1' long 4AG (pure silver) cables with Postmaster spades. When moving on to stereo amps I did like @dill and got myself a set of 8' Clear Day Double Shotgun (also pure silver) cables. Good enough for my modest system

I still have a pair of 8' Tara Labs Time & Space Phase !! (how's THAT for a trip back in time ;-) sitting in a box, and some cloth-covered Western Electric solid core copper cables I haven't gotten around to trying.

Full Nordost Frey 2 loom, conditioning too. Had more upper end Nordost in the system but didn't own them. Incredible.

8 awg copper o.f.  Standard twist.

Real 8 ga wire. Barely fit in my knockoff Nakamichi banana plugs.

belden for amp to preamp

main system Groneberg pre to amp, same 8ga speaker wire

audioquest cd to pre.

the Belden ceased the radio station tweeter interference,as with audioquest it was audible.

audioquest used are topaz and quartz.

have XLR pair.

I may test the silver cables, they did slightly boost the treble and upper mids.

While K-S Realization is in my main system, I won't be spending that for my family room with 30' runs.  I currently have double runs of 10g Audtek OFC wire from Parts Express, with nice spades I soldered.

I have now purchased 70' of Furutech Alpha FS 36 (OCC copper) bulk wire from VHAudio.  I ran the cable last night, and now need to terminate it.   I will be using this Alpha 36 run for mids and highs, keeping the 10g copper for the bass.  I will post impressions once the project is complete!

So I finished running and terminating the Furutech FS Alpha 36.  I bought 70', but ended up only needing about 55', and was able to get them fairly equal in length.  I stripped 5" of the dual layer insulation, and slipped about 3" of 5/8" heat shrink over the 'Y'.  I used my brand new heat gun.  Wow.  Sooo much better than a lighter and does not blacken the heat shrink.  Then I stripped the ends, tinned the ends with Cardas solder, and slipped a 1/2" Red or Black heat shrink up the wire.  I used Furutech gold plated spades, which have two nice allen set screws which are easy to get super tight into the tinned ends.  I next pulled the shrink up and heated those to complete the job.

The new runs go the mid / high frequencies with the older 10g OFC still to the lows.  The sound was immediately more open, airy clear and sparkly!  Over the past few days they have settled in nicely, smoothing out a bit, and I am very pleased. This is nice wire, and reasonable considering the long runs!  Chris at VH Audio was super helpful and had good pricing.

Currently Auditorium A23.

Will eventually upgrade to Audience AU24Sx and put the A23 on my second system. A few other items to get first though (i.e. Puritan PSM156).

@jerrybj I did the same thing Jerry, I purchased AU24 SX to replace my A23. It didnt turn out, however, as the AU24 SX was NOT an improvement. Quite the contrary. The AU24 SX may not be as effective with higher impedence loads (Devore Fidelity 10-12ohm) as the Auditorium 23 speaker cables. Bass and heft diminished considerably with the AU24 SX. I ended up selling the AU24 SX and kept the A23. YMMV

@ghasley

Not the response I was expecting...

Has not put the cat amongst the pigeons, but your experience has definitely given me food for thought. Maybe even saved me a few thousand!

@jerrybj

What speakers are you currently using? Alot of us assume better must be better...and I have no doubt there are countless happy owners of AU24 SX BUT....the impedence match is a very real thing that I completely disregarded in advance.

Maybe cable manufacturers don’t spend alot of time developing with higher impedence speakers...frankly, there aren’t alot of them around. Something that might sound/perform well with a Wilson Sasha DAW might be inappropriate for a Devore O96. The amplifier/cable/speaker combo requires proper matching. The only thing we all discover is that there is no one-size-fits-all. Best wishes...

@ghasley

I have AU24SX RCA cables, and an AES/EBU, which are superb.

Run the Auditorium 23 to a pair of ATC SCM19v2 speakers. With A23 jumpers.

Audience FrontRow.

Though sitting idle these days as I no longer have monoblocks. I should have gotten a long cable.

@jerrybj

The AU24 sx speaker cables might be fine then. Your ATC’s are 85db/8ohm speakers so the strengths of the A23 with higher impedence loads is less of a factor. The AU24 sx IC’s and AES cable are both fine performers.

Thanks ghasley

Have the Puritan PSM156 to buy first. Then consider next steps.

I had a full loom of Audience AU24sx.  Loved them.  Then my dealer, while delivering my Hailey 2 speakers swapped in a set of K-S Elation speaker cables. Much fuller midrange and better bass, while still having great highs.  Full spectrum.  I now feel the AU24sx’s were thin sounding but with great highs.  I now have all KS.

Good news is the AU24 SX were ez to sell.

Hopefully what I should be hooking up tomorrow.

Been using Duelund DCA 12 bare for a couple years with good results. Ordered their best silver foil 3.0 along with special order Aeco pure silver spades that I waited on special order for 9 weeks. Have them built now...we will see, or should I say hear.

Furez : An absolute giant-killer as much of a cliche’ that is.  A well-known audiophile friend of mine was incredulous at how good this ridiculously inexpensive wire is.

Unfortunately, Furez has gone out of business.

I've been running Monoprice 4-12 for years now,& just pulled the trigger on 75m of,

FURUTECH FS-α36 Flagship OCC HIFI Speaker Cable Fever Grade Audio.

Wasn’t cheap.

Owned with Various amp

- Audioquest type 4 speaker cable from 2000 to 2003 with Exposure 2010 integrated

- Argento Serenity speaker cable from 2003 to 2013 with PBN audio gears

- Organic audio speaker cable from 2013 to 2020 with Audiomat Aria

- Kimber monocle XL 40e anniversary from 2020 to 2021 with Liberty Audio gears

Nowadays with PBN audio LxIS and EB-SA 1 monos.

- Organic audio référence speaker cable,(very good)

and

 - unfortunately a brand new pair of Argento Serenity speaker cable that i have already exchange 2 times for poor build quality.

i’m very disapointed with Argento! they increased prices bu 25% but the build quality dropped a lot. It’s the worst cable i ever have.(textile sheath that tears itself)

I will open a thread about it tomorow with some pictures.

I’m waiting for Argento for a replacement or a refund.

I have used many models, there are expensive and cheap, I think the most affordable is EBXYA CABLE

Just moved from Fidelium to Purist Audio Venustas. Very impressed. They added more depth and detail than I was getting with the Fideliums which I had used for approximately 4 years.
