I think I'm the third oldest. Because if you don't remember transistor radios, duck-and-cover drills, Pinkie Lee, and late-night test patterns, how can you be trusted on sound quality?
Young enough to kick any of your butts, haha! (well, maybe except for those dudes in their 30’s). Never used a slide rule, but have actually seen, used, and changed the ribbon (was that what they were called?, I forget....) on a manual typewriter......
Just turned 43 over Thanksgiving weekend. Always had a infatuation with electronics - Having a sweet Home Theater set up was my dream growing up, best stereo set up I ever had was in my Toyota Corolla in college - think the gear cost more than the car. I’ve slid down the rabbit hole into 2 channel about 2 years ago.... 3 sets of Towers later, 2 amps and 2 different streaming rigs / DAC’s later still on that journey to find Audio Nirvana. No shortage of ways to spend money in this hobby!
Oh the days when, in my humble 100,000 size town had dealers for Magnaplaner, Quattre, Ampzilla, Carver, Audio Research, Classe, B&W, Rotel to name a few. Then there was a 20 year time lapse. Now i am a Rennaissance(sp) Man with a new setup at 64.
I am 63 and have been into the hobby for 50 plus years...I am also happy to report that my 3 year old daughter love music too! Go figure, I guess the apple and tree thing is alive and well at our house!
71 - Been into this hobby since I was 22. I stopped searching for the holy grail of audio years ago. It's still about the sound but it's more about the music.
Old enough to have heard the Stones live in Hyde Park in '69, listened to the Beatles at night with my transistor radio before the first Sullivan broadcast, was shocked by the announcement of Kennedy's assassination in my school classroom, practiced duck and cover at school in preparation for a nuclear attack. What ever happened to the flying cars and personal jet packs we were supposed to have by now?
I was 35 years old in 1990 when I bought my brand new pair of Klipschorns for $2800.00. I can still remember opening those boxes up and getting blasted with that smell of just being finished.
59. Got the bug in 80. Started with a Fisher stack. In 84 upgraded to HK integrated with Infinity Kappa 7s. Got back in in 2018 and I’ve had three sets of gear since. Now have Hegel H390 and Focal Aria 936s. Happy camper here.
Looking through these responses,(age wise) is very reminiscent of the 2019 Robin Trower concert. Which by the way was awesome. I am 54, and I think I was the youngest one there.
I’m 65, and getting into higher end equipment only this year. My first stereo that wasn’t junk was a Pioneer SX626 I got at 16, then a pair of Radio Shack Realistic Nova 7 speakers, and a cheap Garrard TT. Then got large Advents and a Sony reel to reel. It seemed good at the time.
Lovers of parties, Lovers of fun, We are the Class of 81!
So, 57.
Got my first system, an all-in-one unit from Sears with an 8-track player, in 1978. Built my second system myself from parts at Radio Shack and plans I found in books at school. This led to studying electrical engineering in college. After trying a number commercial systems over many years, I am back into building my own tube-based amplifiers to use with commercial sources. Love DIY!
Mid-60's here. Started with my brother's hand me down system of AR speakers a Dynaco SCA 35 and Dual TT. Moved on to Kenwood and Large Advents and on from there... Lots of pop's hand me downs. I still have his Nak 700, CA Audio Labs CD and his old Linn is my primary table.
class of '71. one of the first bands I saw was Captain Beefheart in Des Moines,IA. The first quality system I heard was McIntosh / Klipsch, hooked ever since.
65 Saw Beatles, Stones, Herman's Hermits live on Ed Sullivan. Saw The Who, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Eric Clapton, to name a few, live at local venues. Bought my first mid-fi system in 1972 and have been enjoying music on an ever changing system ever since. Music has been a great part of my life since my first memories.
