Had an epiphany, what would happen when all of you die?
This is not about analog directly or even music, I don't think there is another place in this planet with adepts like most of you are here in audiogon, what will happen when you all die? Raul, MC, Mijo, Lew, Erik, Atmasphere, (myself), even the one that shall not be named, even GK (how ya doing cupcake).
Will someone carry the torch? Would anyone care?Kind of sad to say see an age in audio technology (not only analog) pass by, really this post doesn't even make any sense, apologies in advance.

Lol, not really.... What a useless post mine I was reading about Elons new satellite chain, the amount deployed every week, how these get repositioned after launch, and such, and the thought that we are still debating vinyl here with so many details and audio in general it so contrasting with this new world we are living in, 50 years from now, will anyone here be so interested and debate at the levels of today? Will vinyl still be a thing? So I just wondered how would that be when we are all gone Like I said useless post of mine |
All my crap will either be given away, thrown away, or sold at a yard sale...🥺...no one else cares about this stuff but me. Trying to get my daughter interested in the hobby. She seems receptive and received her first turntable for Christmas last year. In addition,, She gets all my hand me downs. She will have an enormous lp collection should I no longer be around! |
@luisma31, Don't worry about it Luis. Music is a primitive instinct. It will not go away ever. It may evolve but that is it. Will records be around 100 years from now? Stranger things have happened, maybe not, who knows. But, music will soldier on. Of that I am certain. My stuff is going first to my wife then my kids. What happens to it is up to them. |
If ever there was a guy who would be impossible to replace, it would be Al. He is gone, and AG lives on. Others who had real ability to contribute have moved on. AG has gone on without them, too. Sadly, in my opinion, AG has lost a bit of its soul in the process. Your list has ignored some guys who really have deep knowledge and a helpful spirit. I'd take advice from guys like Schubert, Frogman, and Charles1dad in a heartbeat over some of the names on your list. |

My wife likes the music but will have no hope of setting up a Schröder or even an Aro. She does at least know this and what I paid for them so will probably contact a local dealer to either dispose of them and my LPs or do a deal on something more user friendly like a Rega 10. The Naim NBLs will also defeat her but the little Thiels were always her favourite anyway so I can see her keeping those and the amps and digital source. I just hope she remembers about the transit screws. If we both go at the same time than who cares! |

Teo, we are always in the moment of change. Change is a continuum like time. The problem with us humans is that we can be so change resistant. On the other hand things are happening again that are very scary. We may have not learned from history and are destined to repeat mistakes made in the past. On a happier note. My nephew took my deceased dad's first generation Marantz tube receiver and 15" (or is that 16") Tannoy speakers. He was embarrassed about "stealing" them from me when I saw the stuff at his house but I couldn't have been happier. He took bunches of old LPs as well. Luckily, Dad invited me to take the ones I wanted long, long before he died. Thus my cache of Shaded Dogs, London FFSS's, Six Eye Columbias (both red and gray label), Capital Records Sinatras etc. etc. |

Our kids will not know what to do with all the albums and CDs we have collected over the years, or even be able to turn on our systems mind you. Think about when they actually have to try to disconnect all the cables and pack up everything in the original boxes that are still all up in the attic....it won’t be pretty. |

This post really hit home, because my husband – a true, old school audiophile who had read this forum for years – died unexpectedly in January. I have all his gear and records to deal with and it’s a bit overwhelming. I have 3 sets of electrostatic speakers ( 2 Bevs and 1 Quad) all in various stages of being rebuilt, a vintage Macintosh amp that just decided to stop working, a variety of other components and a couple hundred records. I think I have found someone willing to take on the speaker rebuilding but what do I do with all the records? They are mostly classical and jazz and the local used record stores are only interested in rock. And the Mac amp weighs a ton. I can’t even move it. So you all may think you’re immortal, but give a moments thought to what you would be leaving your spouse or partner to deal with if you unexpectedly got hit by a bus tomorrow. |

No reason to be skeptical. The torch will be passed. This Thing is extremely contagious. New biological material is coming. Actually it’s drones and bots, programmed to make it seem that way. That is why although everyone who actually tries it knows mods rule, but yet the majority of posts deride mods and push everyone to buy buy buy upgrade upgrade upgrade. It’s not real people doing this. It’s all AI. Not even very good AI. But the thing about it is being bots they can post a lot. So anyone just checking in they see all the same comments they think it is from real people, and go out and buy buy buy upgrade upgrade upgrade. In reality the only actual people here are you, me, mahgister, oldhvymec and a half a dozen others. All the rest are bots. The new biological material is silicon. |
Kiwms, so sorry to hear of your loss. It has to have been devastating for you, and understandably overwhelming to have to deal with your spouses belongings in the aftermath. When you feel ready you could start a thread here on Audiogon asking for advice about what you might be able to do to with the belongings you mentioned. There are some very knowledgeable and considerate individuals on site who might be able to help you out and steer you in the right direction. Condolences and take care, Michael |
I think that Beolab 90 are on to something - different modes for different needs and different recordings. I use old MBL 101 and recent Gradient 1.5 Helsinki. Besides different bass (I clearly prefer dipoles), some recordings benefit from omnidirectional dispersion; some others have lots of reverb in them, and sound better with Gradients. Even then, if I do not wish to stay put, I am most of the time better served by MBLs. And Gradients are not for a “party mode”. I heard Beolab 5 and almost bought them, they create wide soundstage in the whole room ... but on second thoughts they would not really replace MBLs or Gradients, so I used a defect as the pretext to back from the deal. This made me think I may be best served by Beolab 90 - narrow when I wish so, or wide, or omnidirectional. Beolab 90 are rather expensive. Probably with time the technology will trickle down; still, beeing impatient — and, as this thread rightfully observes, being mortal, — I cannot help thinking that I may just sell everything and look for a reasonable second hand deal on Beolab 90. *** As to the question in the title, as a BA in theology and religious studies I can confirm that we cannot go to the Good Place unless we repent and give up our gear. |

If you want to know what happens to your stuff in the future, well everything around you wants to use its converted energy to return back to its natural state. Think rust, it takes time but it will happen, slowly. Enjoy your ice cream now, it is melting and you don't want to miss a drop. |
I’m going to put in my will that my kids will inherit my iPhoto library and my Roon play history and library. The beauty of both is the time stamp (and in the case of iPhoto, a place stamp too). Maybe when I’m gone, someone might wonder “what was he listening to around the time when we...” and a quick interrogation of the Roon metadata will reveal all. And maybe some memories of me will come flooding back. (Who am I fooling...) |
