AI and the future of music
i would like to see AI applied to the task of restoring damaged old recordings, both audio and video. imagine the 1938 benny goodman allstar jazz concert at carnegie hall in full fidelity without that windstorm of crackly NOISE mixed in with the m...
List some of your favorite live Jazz recordings
if it weren't for the dreadful sonics, the '38 benny goodman allstar jazz concert at carnegie hall would be top of the list. it was hearing that recording that made me get involved with digital audio restoration in the first place!
Am I defective?
i could not act to save my life. my stendahl's though saves me from having to act.
What happened to all the highend stereo shops
back in the day i simply had not sufficient fundage to get anything. i was not alone. expanding working class and shrinking middle is what did them in IMHO. a lot of them also were snooty IMHO, looked at me in work clothes with visible disdain. wo...
Can a system sound too Holographic?
saying one's stereo imagining is "too holographic" is to me about as sensible statement as "one's bank account is too rich." it makes me scratch my head.
Whats playing on your system today?
some ella and ry cooder that i revectored to better suit me and my hearing mechanism.
Most amusing album or song titles
dr. rick hanzlik MD [aka "dr. rock"] "i’d rather have a bottle in front of me" the jump in the saddle band- "the curly shuffle" the snake oil willie band - "i don’t look good naked anymore" butterball brown's orchestra- "it's drunk out tonight"...
What sonic qualities connects to you deeply and emotionally?
ambient envelopment, no matter the music.
the big one: how do you choose speakers? By what features, data?
i don't have a typical rich person's monster amplifier, so speakers i use must be fairly sensitive, above about 88 db [1w/1m] sensitivity. my thiel cs.5s barely made the cut as do my present magnapans.   they also [for the same aforementioned reas...
Worth fixing?
hmmmm.... if the unit does something or does something in a way that no more modern unit quite does, i’d move heaven and earth [within affordability or availability of fundage] to fix it. case in point, i have an old DBX CD player, unfortunately p...
How do you find time to enjoy your $$$ speakers and system?
the only time i listen to my reference system is when i have to audition a new piece of gear or i have to QC check a CDR i just made. the rest of the time, i listen to music on some "antique" MP3 players that have the best of my collection of roll...
un-becoming an audiophile
takes more than a mere "job" to afford this hobby, more like somebody with a professional degree/CV and 6+figure salary.
un-becoming an audiophile
i'm reminded of alan parsons' definition of an audiophile as somebody who uses your music to listen to their audio equipment.
Is a FLAT response the IDEAL?
and even if you were so fortunate as to get truly accurate playback that was within a whisper of the control room's playback, you might not even like it that much. we all hear differently, lord knows i've heard mixes that made me scratch my head i...
Is a FLAT response the IDEAL?
AFAIC the only way you could truly get true reproduced flatness in record playback is if your listening room and playback equipment are identical to that which recorded it. other than that it is a crapshoot. the most you can hope for in the real w...
