The "one of them" in my case is white guy. Don't even need to 'front' to play this role.
Disagreements and Conflicts between Audiophiles have we lost our brotherhood and maturity?
I looked back over my posts and even my audio business dealings over the last 5 years and it seems like we have lost our ability to peacefully disagree or resolve disputes like grown men. Some of my best friends in this life are audiophiles and I enjoy the gear, the music and the brotherhood. I don’t enjoy the senseless spats. The inability to resolve conflicts and the people trying to destroy peoples business and reputations. Thoughts?
@sns which is why I play tennis. We are at least proud of how badly we dress for the sport. |
"Privileged" to me means having things handed to you. It’s not really fair to label someone who worked hard all their life to achieve success "privileged". That is the happy path for all! Jealousy is a negative character trait. Motivation is much better! We should also all work to maintain a good level of empathy for those who are also good people but perhaps just much less fortunate. |
@jpwarren58 So true! I've simply listened and observed much of my life, funny how people assume you're one of them and speak unfiltered. |
The scale is a gradual one depending on geography. When those who have enjoyed primacy regardless of where they live, when they hear the words "equality" and "fairness", they hear "oppression". All the best, |
Yes, we are unbelievably privileged. Even people living in the lower working class have a lifestyle that would be the envy of half the population on earth. I have spent lots of time in China where most folks working in many factories are skin and bones, calorie limited by their income. They were lucky enough to have jobs and not technically starving. |
“Based on a historical perspective a large proportion of modern day citizens in developed countries are amongst the most privileged that have ever lived on this earth. Many who live with privilege over a lifetime lose perspective of their advantage. I'd more than suggest vast majority of audiophiles extremely privileged humans, have virtually nothing to complain about.
As for conflict, while inevitable with self interested humans competing for limited resources, certainly seems to be on the uptick and more celebrated today. Perhaps this due to the privileged feeling their privilege in peril.” I could not agree with this assessment more. |

Agree the ability to cause conflict appears to be an asset in politics these days and people have taken notice. Disclaimer: Just my observation. I think it is a plague personally. But some do seem to thrive on it. Very bad! |
@snapsc Bingo...👍...but the commentary on 'the subject(s) at hand/screen can still be valuable and desirable... Whether or not any humor is tagged on the postings do vary. |
devinplombier understood. Humor is a rare commodity here |
@gano my little post was meant to be sarcastic; it wasn't directed at you, sorry :) |
@mikhailark but they think they do, and they know way more than you do |
@gano - who, at the same time, know very little about modern technology. |
@roxy @whart Part of what we are talking about here. I have had guys try to destroy my character and business over audio opinion disagreements. I had a guy literally fake everything about himself. Call the owner of the company and make it like I was hurting his business until I busted him in his multiple lies. In addition to that there is the pervasive attitude and bias sometimes against the higher end stuff and folks that own it. It turns into I’m smarter than you and your equipment is not better than yours you just paid too much like a dummy. Which isn’t the way it actually is. It’s bigger than that. There is more than just that but people get tired of it. The personal attacks etc from people who actually don’t have a lot of experience sometimes or are dead set on being right and disrespectful |
@roxy54 - I don't know the answer, not sure we ever talked about it as such, I do know Albert has a great sense of humor and has been through so much history in audio, experimenting and using so much different high end gear while still retaining this down to earth approach to the whole thing that it's hard to say; he relates to pretty much anybody while knowing a huge amount based on decades of experience. To me, (and I'm in my early '70s), Albert is somebody that is still very relevant and could be a huge source of information to participants here. You can probably reach him through the Porterhouse contact; he's generous with his time, and still hosts listening sessions. I always enjoy talking with him. |
@whart i know Albert porter. We will get together soon |
@calvinj - well, dayum. Small world. Know Albert Porter? I visit him occasionally and if you are ever in Austin, you are welcome to visit (with a little advance notice) and have a listen here. |
@whart I’m in Dallas. |

This is where I go bonkers, is when people (I’m being nice) call things snake oil or call people idiots if a cable sounds different. In their view, nothing can sound different if it’s a cable. Ask these same people about speaker footers, room treatments, Bi-wiring, isolation devices for the amp/preamp/dac, it’s all snake oil to them. If you want this kind of nonsense, forward them to ANA, this is all they do over there, it’s quite laughable. The other thing that bothers me is when somebody recommends something that they have never heard. You can’t read something and then recommend that piece without hearing it and using it. Somebody did this a lot years ago. I also recommend using a dac interface that I think is better than using usb and there are many dozens of people that claim this is false when 99% of them has never used i2s nor can their equipment support it. IMO, these people are just like the guy that calls everything snake oil.
