I haven’t partaken in any cannabis for decades, but if I did take that gummy, it certainly wouldn’t be just one song on my menu. It lasts for hours, after all... So, I would have full buffet of songs lined up. Among my choices would be: Yes - Close to the Edge King Crimson - Larks Tongue in Aspic, Red, Starless and Bible Black Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame, Lost Trident Sessions The Contortionist - Language Eberhard Weber - Colours of Chloe Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays - As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls PFM - Per un Amico Gong - Gong's "Flying Teapot" trilogy is pretty much designed to accompany this sort of experience. And since I wasn’t into contemporary, atonal and avant-garde classical music back in the days when I did partake, I would certainly line up some choices from this, too. I would expect the overall complexity of this stuff to benefit from being under the influence. Such as: Elliott Carter - Concerto for Orchestra (1969), Piano Concerto (1965), or many more Charles Wuorinen - 4th Piano concerto (2003), Iridule for oboe and six players (2006) Or Bruno Maderna, Joan Tower, Unsuk Chin, Magnus Lindberg, and others. |
@garebear - Yes, that show was at the Buffalo Auditorium. Wish I could have joined you! They did a killer jam out of He's Gone that included a "Gloria" tease. Fall '79 is just chock full of nuggets and has become my favorite Dead tour. @jerryrocks - you can find several recordings of that show (and every recorded Dead show) at the Internet Archive (archive.org). |
I’m so glad there are so many others out there that refused to give up the herb and hash, even when we had to "grow up and be responsible".
Some great suggestions already given, but I’ll second the already mentioned "Animals" by Floyd -- you got to be crazy not to enjoy Gilmour’s Strat on "Dogs". See what I did there? Another previously mentioned artist, Billy Thorpe, and his album "Children of the Sun" tripped me out the first time I heard it -- on headphones. If you know it, you know why.
I haven’t seen Robin Trower mentioned -- "Bridge of Sighs" is a slab of vinyl just made for Lebanese Blonde on a pin under a glass. Add "Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe" by Alan Parsons Project, ELP’s "Brain Salad Surgery", and "Nursery Cryme" by Genesis to the hash list.
A band that flew under a lot of stoner’s radar, unfortunately, was Mahogany Rush, led by guitarist Frank Marino. The 1972 debut, "Maxoom", 1976’s "Mahogany Rush IV", and 1979’s "Tales of the Unexpected", are prime for sharing a bong with friends. When I want to visit current offerings from Stoner bands my go to is any album by King Buffalo or Elder. Absolutely killer bands. |
@tunehead, how many did you take man?! you posted that twice 😜 Rodrigo y Gabriella Jakob Gurevitsch Osamu Cream ..Disraeli Gears |
@majew001 .....any gummie that would make your skin crawl like that is one that ought to have a major warning label on it.... "HIGHly advised that you should have a 'Straight Sitter' (...not your sister, Silly...) keeping an eye on you." You might end up like the Hinton family.....(poor bass tards).... Ended up with 100 tins of lizard meat, when all Ms. Hinton wanted was an all-purpose vegetable peeler....*sick sardonic laughter* |
@majew001 ....got sidetracked @ MacA park..... ...dam' helicopters, Again....🤪 ...finally found my waylaid out.....building looked like it was made out of tofu.... Blue tofu....starting to lean into the street, so beat feet away.... ...still lost....😎 |
Some good suggestions but no Reggae? Really? Try Bob Marley - Kaya to start. A bit deeper would be Mighty Diamonds - Right Time and many others. Never get tired of these. Also seems a lot of focus on 70’s “stoner” music which is fine but there’s so much great new music that sounds amazing with (or without) a bit of herbal enhancement. Well recorded Americana/Outlaw Country is my current favorite: - Chris Stapleton was already mentioned - Jason Isbell - amazing songwriter - Watchhouse - Husband/wife led band - well recorded, amazing harmonies and musicianship. Try Such Jubilee to start - Allison Krause - what a voice and great band Happy listening! |
