Top 10 Live Albums
I would add the live portion from Cream's Wheels of Fire.  Crossroads and Spoonful make one amazing side of an album, remembering there was nothing in it's class when released
What is the first thing you do when you unwrap a new vinyl record?
Back in the day, I would record it on my R2R and then put it away.
More potential bad news for some big names...
As I contemplate the audio market I am unsure as to why better quality has gotten so expensive.  My frame of reference is televisions.  If you look at the price history of TVs against their quality and feature history, it is clear that the quality...
??? How Much Would You Spend ???
The speaker choice is critical to the balance of the expenditures.  I am a Maggie guy and they require much from their amps.  I have 750 wpc bench tested and those are not inexpensive.  On the other hand, if you prefer highly efficient speakers yo...
Amp Stands - Wood or Stone
My experience is directly related to my speakers.  Maggies (I have 3.6 model) improve by orders of magnitude with the bracing of metal Mye stands on spikes.  The extra rigidity helps the sound greatly. This is not germane to owners of box speaker...
The Allure of Vintage Audio Gear
My first quality system, bought in the late 60s still resonates in my mind.  Sansui AU-555, TU-555 with a Dual 1019 Turntable and Shure B15 Type III cartridge.  Speakers were Sansui SP-100 with beautiful wood lattice front.  I also had an AKAI R2R...
Truly Stunning Vinyl Album
I would like to add that anyone who has 3.7 Maggies does not have "mid fi" sound.  Do not let the 1%  intimidate you, you have high quality sound.   That said, four albums stand out for me as a recommendation.  They are diverse, Janis Joplin - ...
Do different speaker stands can really make a big sound improvement?
Much also depends on type of speakers you are using.   Found that Maggies blom with the added rigid support of Mye stands.  The Maggie community has embraced them and recommended as the most bang for the buck upgrade  you can acquire.
Would you move to a bigger house if you could just to have a better listening room ?
I downsized from a 3600 ft 1854 home with 14 ft ceilings on an acre.  It was just too big for 2 people and down to I dog from 3.  My new home has a much smaller listening room, but I am good with my set up.
Those rare albums that are great on first listen.
Janis Joplin - Cheap Thrills Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore These two completely blew me away when they were released.  I was fortunate to see Duane and Janis in person before we lost them way too early.
Seeking Honest Opinions: Your Experience with McIntosh Audio Gear
Sound is individual perception and McIntosh has many fans as well as detractors.  I will say that my combination of 3.6 Maggies paired with MC501 mono blocs and a C220 tube preamp has served me very well in 5 different locations in 3 homes over th...
Best Covers
Three come to mind, Smokestack Lightin' with The Yardbirds covering Howlin' Wolf.  Burnett even said it was the best version of his song. Tje Allman Brothers Band covering Taj Majal's version of Statesboro Blues, which became their signature tun...
Do You Buy Speakers Without Hearing Them?
There is no substitute for listening IMHO.  I auditioned many box speakers, but once I heard Maggies I was sold.  I have had good success with electronics, buting McIntosh used.  If I wanted to sell, I could always get all my money back.  My tube ...
Best Covers
Smokestack Lightening by the Yardbirds, Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) said it was the definitive version.
The Sound Quality Of Commercially Pre-Recorded Reel-To-Reel Albums
Back in 1975 I had a 4 channel R2R and bought prerecorded tapes for it. The genre never caught on, but the sound was amazing. Live at the Fillmore blew me away and I have heard that music on every media it was released in except 8 track. R2R beat...
