In my observation, moderation is becoming more heavy handed in many forums. I can understand why, since so many threads seem to devolve into the same flame wars of "Can you tell the difference in a double blind study" vs. "your system/ears not resolving enough." That said, it’s not as fun as it used to be. The Roon forum, for example, has a bit of feel of being in military school now. If only people could behave... Some forums have even split apart into their own echo chamber subgroups. A while ago AutiophileStyle put up a set of forum topics for discussion of cables, fuses, digital reclockers, where "that’s snake oil" responses are not allowed. Maybe Audiogon needs some designated "safe spaces" - threads where flaming and disagreement are not allowed, only discussion of *whatever* and then other threads where it’s a cage match, and it’s all allowed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohDB5gbtaEQ

I'm talking (posting) about "software based" BOTS. I can only find one remaining thread initiated by these BOTS (the others have been deleted). Many of the BOTS have "joined" the same sites (Roku, AllKpop, Canon Global, Net Gear - et cetera and to name just a few) within minutes of initiating their Audiogon account? They typically made a single post and that was it. However, some of them came back with a 2nd post (reply to their thread) with a link to a product/service) and then that was it.

In all honesty, mine was barely funny....even to me.. So, @thecarpathian ...you're absolutely right. *s* (No +; it was just the 'try' aspect...'a Zen arrow into the dark, likely hitting one's own ass...' ;) ("...his jokes fell like leaden farts upon the stage...")... too true, too often... It would seem odd to launch an AI'd bot into forums as this, if only to generate some off-the-non-existent-wall form of vague disillusionment over new posters, or even spoofing real ones...and they'd likely be better at it than yours truly. *l* Now, if there was an on-going snit over some political flame, a moth-bot may be drawn here; but when there's muchomore elsewhere....? 'It's just highly illogical', Spockishly... Free money....right....anyone who remembers the closing scenario of The Magic Christian should agree that even 'free' has a cost....

The term bot comes from social media when automated scripts would run to pollute a discussion, especially based on keywords. It has been expanded to mean insincere participation in a discussion threads, especially from commercial or government funded message farms. There's a huge amount of research on this related to Twitter if you are interested. Google "twitter misinformation bots" and I'm sure you'll find lots of it. It is difficult for us end-users to prove anything about bots and their behavior, especially on individual posts, unless it’s glaringly obvious, like "I found a place that lets you print free money and I wanted to share the URL with you..." Observing the forums over time however you can get a good sense of the shift to bot-ness. |
It’s what some are calling these generic questions from brand spanking new members coming out of nowhere. The questions always seem to stir debate or require lots of advice as they’re lacking in specificity. The responses can be detailed and thorough but the OP seems to just vanish from the thread. Check out the members start date and you’ll see. So we call them bots. All the best, |
I do not understand the term "bots" when referring to Audiogon message entries. Is it referencing humans who physically type responses or questions based on a need to disturb things? or Is it talking about machines or digital software that is programmed to make up questions or answers which may be relevant or may just be antagonistic for whatever reason? How can any entry be proven to be either of the above?

And all this time I thought jokes were supposed to be funny. I guess the definitive word here is ’try’. Now what @nonoise wrote, that was funny! |
Lightening up goes both ways. How many times does it have to be pointed out that the 1st amendment only restrains government censorship. Private entities like this can moderate how they like until the cows come home even if they have "public" forums. Just what did you say to the mods to have it taken down anyway? All the best, |
Try making a joke about the Audiogon Mods and see how far over your head it goes. Jeez, you and @nonoise need to lighten up. More like @nosenseofhumororsarcasm.
Peace out. |
@dekay : Interesting. I asked your AI dumb as bot “ what is the best DAC”. I was surprised it came up with something different than ASR party line:
I actually wonder how many humans go with that AI recommendation 🤔 Shocking the AI thinks audio is subjective 🤯 |
OK, but if that were true they'd delete all of my comments. 🤣 |
The whole Discussion was Deleted. Not only Your Comment. I do Post and Drop. I would never know if any of my comment was deleted. My fingers exercised the first amendment. Hopefully my sarcasm doesn't insult anyone but myself. I recall one discussion gave new insight of stereo to me. I came to the realization of Phase Aligned Direct Current. Brilliant discussion. |
I always thought deleted comments were/must have been interesting. Turns out @erik_squires your deleted comments were boring :) How uncool! |
