McIntosh -- good for show, not for sound, says dealer

More unvarnished truth from YouTube.
"real audiophiles...know it doesn't sound that good"

Real audiophiles -- be aware. You've been read the Riot Act.

Discuss.

128x128hilde45

None of you that constantly argue about the "sound" are actually into this hobby for the music.

Hilde is right....

And in real life there is 2 kind of people like in Hollywood cinema too: those who stake so much for truth that they can apologize if their words were misundestood or overstated and those who cannot because of their ego...

Ego people are not bad, we all have an ego, but in some criticial situation ego matter less than truth and intention must be clarified in a way or in an another...

Hilde make a good point with a no "insults" thread appealing to a clarification....

I concur with him....Clarification has been made...

@hilde45

Your promise to be polite but in your invitation is already a veiled insult ("what you think you know"). No, you’ve already proved your ability to be abusive. You can make another video -- calling this "the yellow" site and calling folks here "hens" etc. No, your invitation to name-call and abuse on Zoom is politely declined.

fair point -- we should be reminded that words are cheap

many checks are written with words that cannot be cashed with actions

like the wife beater who says honey can i come home, i’ll be different this time

utter lack of self awareness is often one's greatest weakness, and source of one's undoing

and what a remarkable coincidence you mention banking and Nigeria..

I thought they made a power conditioner?

The Swiss are also known for banking.

jerry, jerry

and what a remarkable coincidence you mention banking and Nigeria..

@laoman So you are that guy that keeps sending his banking information to that Nigerian Prince. All this guy is, is hot air. I have no horse in the race either and I do not hate American companies like you though.

IF I were in the US I would buy equipment from you, because you tell it like it is and are not full of bs.

hilde45, I applaud your approach and clarity.

bigtex22, So well said. How do we define "good" or "better" when it's a matter of taste?

and I thought the demise of Jerry Springer would leave a void that could never be filled…..

Mike Powell posts to me:

OP, why dont you join me in a Zoom chat we record to discuss what you think you know ... ?? Ill post in on YT ..... Ill be polite and you can ask me questions and get answers because you are currently assuming a lot as if you know what you are talking about.

And what do I "know"? I have not claimed to know anything -- I have posted your video, your comments, verbatim. As you can see on this thread, many took offense to what you said -- again, your words, taken verbatim. Those not recalling can look on 02-15-2022 at 06:13am. It's not the only point where I rehearse what you said, but it will do. People who wish to could also re-watch your video. They can judge for themselves.

I’m done with you, dude. You tried to stir the pot in the guise of truth-teller, you pissed a lot of people off, and now rather than say something simple like, "I overstated things" you’re making more videos and doubling down. I don’t think you’re a bad guy, but you’re not owning up to your hyperbole on your video and your trash-talking, here. This is why I suggested that friends help you with an intervention. It’s not because you’re all that messed up -- you clearly know a lot and you have a passion for audio -- but an intervention is appropriate because you are refusing to see what to most everyone else is obvious.

I will not reply to further comments from you. People can agree with my summary of the situation or not, but the matter to me is plain -- you will not address what you said, and prefer to attack rather than offer up a crumb of contrition. Goodbye.

I love the guys trashing McIntosh who emphatically claim “it’s not as good as <insert brand they own here>” like it’s a statement of fact.  Taste is a very personal thing - we’re all entitled to our opinions, but that’s all it is…an opinion.

@oldhvymec I forgot the Fox Terrier !! DOG is my second language.. I did see the pic and hes adorable. I meant to say something about him but forgot I could not agree more that Dogs are far better than people.

LOL I can dig fugly machines, rat rods, hoopdies and the like for sure. While I may extend out of my preferred weight class and punch a welterweight in the trunks, I dont do broken helmets. Well I'll tell you what laoman and tsushima1 IF I post the cases next to my dog will that satisfy you or are you going to continue. Will you promise to leave and NEVER come back?

Heck Mike is fine you two though. He has a purpose, what the heck are you two REALLY about?

At this point I'm pretty sure you can get away with anything an AG. Look at the pair of you. Admin/Moderator put up with you two. Insulting folks, making fun because your not in front of me.. We all know that's true. Your both are rather sad.. BUT I still have my 24k cases and you don't. There is a fact.. I would have told you who to contact but, I'd doubt they would have anything to do with you. You're both quit the nasty little pair.

Remind me of hemorrhoids. You know you get them from workin' your A$$ off not your mouth..

Have either of you said anything constructive? ONE SINGLE THING? Please point me there. Insult my country, insult my gold cases, what else are you going to stoop to. My dog, then the rabbit?  I THINK NOT. I draw the line at the rabbit, The dog can whip the pair of you at the same time. She's 14 lbs..

Funny guys..

Admin quit erasing my post  and shutting down threads. I don't like it. That's all you need to know. I don't like it at all.. Please stop. Your bothering me. Your on this earth to make me happy, no one else.. I wish you would figure that out..

Thankyou for you hard work..

BTW I want to me Emperor. First order of business. The two funny guys, bring um here, go get a young calf, we'll see if they are really up to it..:-) I'll take the video.

I have owned many MAC components during the 60s, 70s. I even worked for several high end audio shops during the time. MAC gear is good stuff made well but just not the best sounding gear for the money.  Back in the 60s and 70s the MAC had tech that would travel their dealers and test and fix any gear they made that was quite nice of MAC. However, that was when Macintosh own the company and that perk no longer exist as MAC is owned by some Japanese company.

MAC gear is still built well and only the ultra high-end gear is built to a higher quality.  Regardless of how much you love your MAC gear it's not the top sound gear buy a long shot. It's not bad sounding either just not near the top either. However, it's way good enough to listen to music. Would I trade my Pass Labs for MAC no way.  So if you own it an enjoy it that is what counts, listening to music not to equipment.

Jim

Honest works for me.. I'm a grumpy ol fart until I see the neighbor lady. She's a peach for sure.

I'm no party pooper. Who cares what others think, they have the right to be wrong and ashamed, and all about the same thing. Mcintosh is, like JELLO, there is always room for Mac. :-)

@stereo5

@holmz,

Nope, not cancel culture at all.  Do you even know what cancel culture is?

That is why I said “Audio equivalent” (of cancel culture).

It seems like many people want to get threads chopped off at the point that they turn in a direction that they do not like.

And any voice that is not in the mainstream, gets shut down in politics, and many other places.

It is like adults cannot share differing opinions in a mature fashion and need the parents of admins, to just shut down threads and give timeouts.

I have some Mc gear, and I like the look of it.
I like it because I can lord it over others, and everyone knows it should be good… so it is great for social signalling.

But I am kind of a moron, and generally grumpy… so there is that.

Why is this thread still going?  Moderators should close it as nothing more constructive will come from this.

Is ^this^ the audio equivalent of cancel culture?

(He/Mate/Bloke/Him)

Mr Mike you'll notice I give almost as good as I get. BUT I never met a person I didn't like. Some of the things they do is a different story. I'm no different. That speaker is the last place a dog I had for 16 years loved to hang out. Toy Fox Terrier his favorite spot the Sub section.. I never had the heart to finish the thing. 6 years now. Maybe next year..

My early years with Holt (CAT), Deere, Maxim Crain, Drilling rigs in the gulf (water welder) Pile Driving, mining, tunnel work then foundational drilling, Tieback machines. Klemm Bohrtechnik (German). Where is that Roller and a chauffeur my hands hurt, thinking about it. :-)

There was a reason for me and Mac. My Dad was a WE, Mcintosh, JBL, Thoren guy.

Ask me if I would buy any new gear? I am looking for a second Cary V12R in red though. How old is that? It is my favorite amp of all time.. Dodd did some nifty stuff too.. Mac is Mac. It's like John Deere or Liebherr to me.. :-) I know very little about their newer stuff.  I just got rid of a pickup load of Thoren, Dual, and Empire TTs 25 pieces. I'm downsizing. Yes I kept my original Zero 100s. No I didn't pay for it. It was a gift. Works perfect. I'm a mechanic it takes one to keep it tuned up.. LOL What a pretty pile of crap.

I like ugly girls too. Ugly guys too, come to think of it. I like dogs better than both.

@geleary123 Thanks for your service and sacrifice for our imperfect but already great country. IF i might suggest you send an email to Randy Vikan at Elite Audio Technician in Washington state. Expert in all things Mc repair related. He only works on Mc and Primeare. i trust him w my family heirloom MC240, etc.

i think finding a totally invincible CD player is a unicorn myth, they all fail….eventually…i have a dead Marantz Pro boat anchor…but i guess that’s a different thread…

Best to you. Jim

Hello  One & all  i want to say that i had a Mac Mvp Sacd /cd player retail new was  6K yes its face place is beautiful & thats all it never served me well always trouble with cds r very slow & so on  I called Mac they said it need a softwere update a re alinement lpng  befor Covid i would have a 4 mouth  + wait  min  2+ hours serrvice charge  at 165,00 dollars & very uncaring conversation   i could by a yamaha  player that would play for ever At 1/  5th the price  this is Mac at its best  B/S  & now to all the AG  know it all i have spoke with Mickey OCD HiFi he makes alot of sense  never try to sell me big brand name JUNK  Just Tells it like it is  AG seems to have a lot of pass Used car Sales men they all no whats best  my last post ? every AG pals Put Me Down for my miss spelling a lot of LOW BLOW Remarks  this sight no longer is about our common passion of audio its a small group with nothing better to do  Take a good look in the Mirror  GL USMC COMBAT  BRONZE  STAR  recipient maybe some of you remember

Only piece of Mac gear I ever owned was an MC240.

Sold it 25 years ago. Regret selling it to this day…

LOL, This is fully entertaining the AG forums are now " THE HENHOUSE".... allow the Rooster to respond.

OP, why dont you join me in a Zoom chat we record to discuss what you think you know ... ?? Ill post in on YT ..... Ill be polite and you can ask me questions and get answers because you are currently assuming a lot as if you know what you are talking about. For instance you thinking Im saying some gear is for looks some is for sonics , black and white. NOT. What I said is to help people decide how to make decisions on what to buy and one of them is what percent out of 100, is the percentage you give to your gear. By the looks of your gear/ amps especially Id say you give about 30% importance to looks and that comes from your speakers. GOOD ! you value sound more than look.. Proud of you ....

@Stereo51, you are a Mac fanboy. your number of posts and time here when averaged out means for 14 years you have posted EVERY SINGLE DAY. You are FAR from my client base, I see your rig. I have nothing against you or what you choose to listen to. but you have zero ground to stand on throwing rocks at me for not liking your favorite brand in my home. I think its a cool brand, because it looks like OLD gear. In the 60s it was the shit.. you had the biggest balls back then. Were happy for you .

@Oldhvymec for a guy that may could fix a D5, im surprised. Usually guys like you are cooler than to talk smack about a guy with an opinion. the number of posts in 4 years when averaged out means 4 separate replies per day. Not only are you also a total Mac Fanboy but you Quadrupled the online action of Stereo 51 ! I get that you dig big dirty equipment, so that Mac pic from Mexico says it all. Love the unfinished speaker on the left.. Nuff said... we should be talking Harleys not pissing on other dudes in audio forums...

@borat-sagdiyev, Kak Dela ? you are not smelling my Zhopa, it is your own Rasputin breath blowing to your face.

@twoleftears you are a liar.... outright and bold faced. I never sang praises of AGD 2 weeks ago to you. AGD decided to sell around me and go direct mid December 2021 without letting me the dealer know. I found out because a potential customer bought direct. I have not represented the brand since then. The Vivace and Audion monoblocks are phenomenal amps, just like Ive always said. The Tempo amps were a failure at sounding like the bigger amps. They were softer. Jeff Rowland 125 at $2K less floored thier ass in value. After I posted that vid I allowed the 2 buyers I had to send thier amps in for full credit towards Rowland. LOL. You know what I think of you ...

@femore12 this is NOT where guys "with money to buy expensive equipment" come for discussion....

Thankyou acresverde, I’ll take it as a complement. I have a pair. They are so well done they have a high jewelers rating on the finish.. I like um..

MC240s how many people can say they have heard a tricked out MC240. If Samra would come out of the underground I'd send him a pair just to have around. I haven't ever heard anything like them with small planars or ribbons. It's the weird transformer thing they do with 6L6s and they way he (Mike) re-voices them. They are great stock. The problem is the yellow cap crowd screw the sound up. PIO only.. No polly pukes they kill the sound..

Time to feed the chickens..

@oldhvymec    "...who does that..." People for whom the most important factor in their audio experience is the visual, obviously.

I wouldn’t do business with this guy even if he was the only person who sold audio. Looks like he does more harm than good. He would make a great used car or cable salesman.

This is pretty sad.  For months MP was posting these deliriously positive videos about AGD gear.  Now that he's lost the dealership, he's got a new vid out pushing Jeff Rowland and decrying the AGD, which he raved about to me on the phone just several weeks ago.  Is this what a "fair weather friend" is?

Where's D'Artagnan?

60’s McIntosh 225 tube amp

21K for this set 7 weeks ago. MX110z, MC225, MC240, MC275. This is the the picture I used. He is in Mexico City, BIG Mac guy.

They ALL are untouched. One set of power valves and 2 12AX7s Telefunken were replaced. He knew NOT to replace the caps in the 225 and replace ALL the caps in the 240. 275 there are a few bumblebees. He'll spend another 5K to do it correctly.

That MC225 is almost perfect. I have another one the power cord end was cut off in 1970 and placed in a box. The guy bought it played it for 20 days, died and his wife cut the end off so the kids wouldn't plug it in. It was 20 days old when I got it 20 years later. She went to heaven. Kids found the box.. Gave me the 225 and 500.00 for fixing a tractor. I was happy. I just broke that one in. I found the box in my stuff.

Mac is fun. :-) 24K cases for MC60. I got to get that done. Who does stuff like that? MAC people.. Better than a gold plated toilet. AY?

Regards

I think it is kinda funny. As I am reading through all these painful posts that now this Mike Powell character has burned his bridges here with nasty postings under his own name, he has activated his Ukranian sleeper cells to try to clean some of the caked dirt off. This is just wacko! Hilarious when someone with his first post here magically appears to go on and on about what a wonderful experience he has had.

@gilbertogon, nice post.

I agree with you about Mike’s integrity and honesty.

I spoke with a dealer who is located in Indiana on Sunday and he told me that he’s known Mike for a long time and has a lot of respect for him. He also said that I’m getting a great deal from Mike on the new to me NAT Audio gear and that it’s killer! He said he’d purchase the monoblocks again if given the chance.

I hadn’t been able to comment on Mikey’s opinion of McIntosh before because I had no experience with the brand.

That changed on Saturday. I went over to another audiophile home, who I kid you not, lives on McIntosh street! In his setup, he has a Marantz turntable with an Audio Technica cartridge, a 60’s McIntosh 225 tube amp, a vintage McIntosh SS preamp, a vintage McIntosh tuner, and vintage Klipsch Heresy speakers. The system sounded nice.

I’ll be looking forward to hearing it again soon. He wants me to help him dial in his turntable, which I am happy to do. His tuner is absolutely gorgeous!

Why is this thread still going?  Moderators should close it as nothing more constructive will come from this.

Unlike Stereo5, I'd prefer that moderators not close threads using their judgment about whether it is "constructive" or not. Because that same kind of capricious censorship could shut off individual comments which are not constructive, such as Stereo5's, which -- while not constructive -- does not violate any of the rules of the forum.

Mike Powell is a stand up guy and a Straight shooter. He tells it like it is and that may upset some people but I appreciate it because the audio business it’s filled with many disingenuous people. Mike’s products are the real deal I have had many different types of power cables and interconnects Non sound as good as verastarr.Mike talked me out of a $6000 purchase which would have been an impulse buy who does that. The man has integrity that’s worth a lot in my book.I’ve seen some posts hurling personal attacks which is something that does not belong on forums.Everyone has a right to their opinion but we should remember to be civil to each other. I’ve been an audiophile over fourth years I’ve heard mikes system the man knows what He’s doing.

I like Mac gear, as they offer the owners happiness, and this is what this audio thing is all about. When I sold my 2105, I had it tested by a technician ( I now use another tech ), and it met every electrical parameter, as it was worth the bench cost to me, for the money I got for it. It was in great shape, with the walnut cabinet. The only mod I did, I had replaced the power cord with a 12 gauge cord, which did give it more beef. Those who like this sound, great ! Resale value ? Nothing better out there. As far as Mikey and Jay, I have my opinions about each of them, and refuse to discuss it. Just enjoy your purchases.....for sound, for looks....whatever ! If you care about the " sound " of your system, and spend money to better it ( very personal ), you ARE an audiophile. If you are a music " listener ", even better ! Always, MrD.

Why is this thread still going?  Moderators should close it as nothing more constructive will come from this.

haters gonna hate

it’s all they got, sad as it is

when all you have to your name is a rusty old hammer, the whole world just looks like a bed of nails

old hat at this point

I’m running a McIntosh C2300 (tube pre) into an MC152 amp. I love my bourgeois suburban rig

Summary - Mac gear got me to the place where the recording itself becomes the subject of research (rather than worrying about gear) - so easy to hear the differences now. Seems like decent marker in judging quality of one’s rig

(Sources are Roon/Tidal into a Benchmark Dac3 HDC (wow), or a Clearaudio table (good, will upgrade cartridge & see what happens). Speakers are Harbeth SHL5+ (see below). Kimber “Ascent Series” for cabling (their second tier from bottom))

Omnivorous musical taste

I’ve had a few iterations of McIntosh pre/amp combos. Changes have come as I was able to save and upgrade - but never felt the need to move away from McIntosh, and believe in “voicing” - pre & amp from same company. Current combo feels like it will be in place for a long time

Always 2nd-hand from AudioClassics. Mac seem built like tanks. From reliable dealer, stuff lasts forever (personal experience)

Haven’t been interested in Mac tables, or DACs; (I think) those use designs from others & so no particular benefit from using Mac

(Separately, the Harbeth were great choice for me, and have always been pleasantly surprised with the depth, quality and musicality of the base (its other qualities well-covered). Won’t compare them to big towers or adding a couple of subs, but never been tempted to add subs. The Harbeth are just…great sounding…that’s an audiophile term, right?)

Anyway, one from the peanut gallery of longtime Mac owners….

(btw, I find OCD Mikey @mikepowellaudio  entertaining, and some of what he does very interesting- he did a bunch of videos on active crossover networks & manner in which he built & dialed in his, and they are excellent)
