Chris Rea

Chris Cornell

Steve Perry

Elvis Presley

Brent Smith ( Shinedown )

Chris Issack - cuz wifey says so.

Chester Bennington

Robert Wyatt / Brian Eno / Brian Ferry / Jim Morrison / David Bowie /  Ray Davies /

Andy Partridge / John, Paul and George / Peter Gabriel / Mark Mothersbaugh /

Ian Anderson / John Fogerty / Robert Plant / Andy Williams / Ozzy Osbourne /

Richard Thompson / Roger Daltrey / Elvis Costello / Freddie Mercury / Mick Jagger

Jack Bruce / John Doe / Jon Anderson / Alice Cooper / Greg Lake / Johnny Cash

Maybe not a lot of great singers, but I like their songs.

Prog

Greg Lake - ELP, King Crimson

John Wettin - King Crimson, U.K.

Francesco Di Giacomo - Banco del Mutuo Socorrso (Italian prog band) / 5 octave range, beautifully expressive.

Dimetreo Stratus - Area (Italian prog band) / 5 octave voice, could sing up to 4 tones at once, expressive. His voice was studied by several universities around the world.

Gentle Giant - I mention the entire band, because of their complex multi part vocals. Saying they were inventive is an understatement.

Daniel Gildenlow - Pain of Salvation / 5 octave range, power to spare, dynamics, great intonation, and emotion.

A few more: Jon Anderson (Yes), Peter Hammill (Van Der Graaf Generator), Alberto Piras (Deus ex Machina), Peter Gabriel (with Genesis).

Tom Petty, especially the earlier years

Great thread thanks.  My Top 10:

Roger Daltrey

Pete Townshend

Ian Anderson

Steve Winwood

Jim Morrison

David Gilmour

Robert Cray

Gregg Allman

‘Jerry Garcia

James Dewar

Lou Gramm. The note he hits when he sings the line "Juke Box Hero" towards the end of the song. What the heck was that!? Triple high "C" over whatever? IDK, but it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Another one of my all-time favorites is in the Jimmy Hendrix song "Hey Joe" when he sings the line..."I SHOT HER"! Perfection.

Eric D Johnson (Shins, The Fruit Bats, Bonny Light Horseman)

Jackson Browne

Warren Haynes

Markus King

Michael Stype

Colin Melody

Father John Misty

Nick Waterhouse

Jason Isbell

A couple I've not seen listed are:

Glen Shorrock (Little River Band)

Dennis DeYoung (Styx)

The original Little River Band, not the hijacker cover band that exists today, were excellent storytellers. IMO, their best work never reached the radio in the U.S.

A few I didn’t see above:

Willie DeVille

Gene Clark

Mississippi John Hurt

Sam Cooke

Wilson Pickett

Carl Wilson

Delaney Bramlett

James Carr

Vic Damone

Boz Scaggs

Gene Pitney

Harold Melvin

Steve Miller

Brendan Perry

BURTON CUMMINGS

Levi Stubbs

Gary Puckett

Tommy James

John Kay

John Fogerty

Paul Weller - Steve Marriott - Rod Stewart - Paul Rogers - Freddie Mercury - David Bowie - Roger Daltrey - Elvis - Bono - Terry Reid - Chris Cornell.

Pretty solid list...

I always liked Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy also. Alex Ebert and Marcus Mumford maybe.

Steve Winwood

Joe Cocker

Van Morrison

Roger Daltrey

Paul Rodgers

Bryan Ferry

. . . I’d also put Josh Ritter on my list, and probably Ryan Bingham if I could disassociate him from that idiotic TV series he used to appear on.  Also probably Buddy Miller.  Cat Stevens.

John Lennon

Jack Bruce (phenomenal)

Steve Winwood

Steve Mariott

Rod Stewart

I prefer the sound of female vocalists, but Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zant, John Prine, Ray LaMontagne, Jim Croce, Dave Alvin, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Richard Thompson, Boz Skaggs are a few male vocalists whose voices I like a lot.  I used to like Elton John a lot, but I think it was more the lyrics than the voice.  I am sure there are a lot more if I was to go back and look.  Definitely Leonard Cohen.  Eric Clapton.

I used to like Tom Petty a lot but that phase has kind of passed for me.  Someone mentioned Nick Cave and from what I've heard of him I liked.  Chris Smithers.

Bryan Ferry.

Eric Burdon.

Chris Vos

John Fiddler

Thom Yorke

Bobbie Gillespe.

Way too many to list, but I'll certainly concur with those who listed my favorite hard rock singer, Chris Cornell.

I might also add Nick Cave and David Bowie...

and . . .

Richie Kotzen

John Hiatt

Patrick Park

Jim Morrison

Chris Cornell

Bono

Robert Plant

John Martyn

Richard Thompson

No doubt there are plenty of metal/hard rock singers others can recommend...

A few, in no particular order... all other of these may not fit into your category...

Gregg Allman

Jack Bruce

Warren Haynes

Roger Daltrey

Paul Rogers

Leon Russell

Tom Jones (I prefer his later, Bluesy stuff to the 60’s Pop but he’s a great singer)

Steve Winwood

Eric Burdon

All three singers in The Band

Alex Ligertwood (with Brian Auger).

Bill.Champlin

Boz Scaggs
