Can anybody be a speaker designer?

I have a suspicion that anybody can be a speaker designer. There is no right or wrong way to do a speaker. Tekton uses multiple tweeters whereas most only use one. Heck I could do a speaker with 100 woofers and nobody could prove me wrong.

Is speaker design the easiest profession to get into?

It requires no qualifications. It is not REGULATED. And it can potentially make you rich. Have I answered my own question?

Kinda like why you’re able to keep posting here.  Aren’t there some Bose drivers somewhere you need to modify?

Where there is no hazard to public health, unregulated is good. It means the customers can get what they want by forming a market for it.  A regulated business produces what the regulator wants.
Kenjit - has a market formed around the speakers you produce?  Sounds easy, so go for it!
everybody can cook in own kitchen , but only limited people can  be able  to be talented chief  and get success
Kenjit, your body of posts ellude's to that about no one should be a speaker designer .... with exception to possibly you. I would enjoy seeing your design of a perfect speaker. Then of course, a perfect type design amplifier(s) would be needed to match.
Nope. There’s quite a few idiots out there though that think “they” can, probably because “they” have never even tried. But “they” certainly think they’re the bees knees don’t they?
“Only one way to find out.  Try it and see.” ... only problem is “they” probably don’t even know which end of a screwdriver to use, let alone how to build anything except for crappy threads.

Could be. Only one way to know. Put up or shut up. Let the cards fall where they will. Maybe Kenjit has some buried talent that is clearly not apparent via Internet threads.  He clearly is obsessed with speakers.   Nobody knows for sure what they are capable of until they try. Talk is easy. Anyone can do it.
The truth about hitting yourself on the head with a hammer is that it only feels good when you stop.

Same with reading posts by Kenjit.
The speaker industry is what's known as a meritocracy, good designs sell bad ones don't for the most part. Beyond that nothing is really needed.
Can you please stop posting crap on Audiogon.  You continue to post speaker crap all the time wasting everyone's time.  It is so old now.  If you think manufacturing any audio product can get you rich then give it a try.  In your case, go ahead make a speaker and try to sell one and see how you do.  Please go ahead and then place an ad here on Audiogon for us all to see.  Then lets see if anyone buys one from you.  I can't wait!

The speaker industry is what's known as a meritocracy, good designs sell bad ones don't for the most part. Beyond that nothing is really needed.
Wrong. Theres no such thing as a bad design. Every design can and does sell. Its all down to marketing and word of mouth. Wheres the proof that audiophiles can even tell the difference between a so called good or bad design?

Put it in a shiny glossy box. Put a very high price tag on it. Get stereophile to do the reviews. Get people on forums like this to rave. The sales will go through the roof! There are plenty of rich audiophiles out there who have no clue what theyre listening to.

As long as you are cunning it will sell.

"Come on, man."
Are you really this naive?
Of course anyone can design a speaker.
Building it and making it work properly?  That's the 'big trick'....
Your results Will vary.
...wins the lifetime award!
Yup, at birth.  Like the rest of us, proving that timing IS Everything...
*sigh*

I get what you’re trying to say Kenjit. There are plenty of companies out there looking to give us the “full tilt” and then send us off with their overpriced garbage. It’s a good thing we have this forum to gather and exchange useful information before parting with our hard earned cabbage.
I guess not every thread can be a great and informative one, but there’s certainly some entertainment in the responses.
Actually I am giving a try to a DIY pair .... so far I am not at all sure that my result will be any good, but I wanted to try anyway.
As for the shiny box recipe, https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2ol1ge
I have a experience of visiting attending HiFi Events where Speaker Building Enthusiasts bring there work to be auditioned by the attendees.

Some who exhibit are recognised Speaker Designer / Builders, who have a Business and Market their work.

Some  who exhibit are very long term served Speaker Design / Build enthusiasts, who are very sure of what they like and have a clear understanding of how to produce the design.

Some who exhibit are willing to take part in Building Speaker either their own designs or a design that has impressed them.

The exhibits seen on my visits have been from Very Small Cabinet Book Shelf Speakers through to Large Three Way Cabinet Speakers.
Dual Concentric OB's through to 4 Way Active OB's.
ESL's with custom modifications.

I have been impressed by Cabinet Speakers being powered by a
Few Watts Output Power Amp with Speaker Drivers costing a few hundred £££'s.

I have been 'blown away' by OB designs that have been presented by time served enthusiasts.

For myself, the opportunity to meet with talented individuals, and share in their work and receive good clear descriptions of the design intent,
has been a valuable asset in my learning how I would like a Speaker to
deliver a performance.

I have not too long ago acquired pair of DIY Built 3 Way Cabinet Speakers, 'not built by myself'.

They are made up of £600+ of Audax Drivers, £200ish of Xover Parts,
and a Cabinet that is a Five Sided Construction and extremely Heavy for the size.
The Driver Mounting Baffle is 50mm/ 2" Depth, and is modular so that each driver can be removed independently.

Due to the weight, I have only had them auditioned outside of the home on one occasion, at the above referred to event,  where a group of listeners gave a positive appraisal for the performance.
I will say they were not show stoppers.

At home I have used them in Two Rooms and in one room the Front Bass Baffle Panel was removed and the inner volume was reduced,
as well as the Port needed to be modified to control a Reverberating Bass that could be detected behind the listening position.

Designing a Speaker is achievable if there is a understanding of the Math required to work with all the required parameters.

DIY Building a Designed Speaker is the more common method undertaken.

Adding to the design, to allow for easy access to a X over, Internal Cables and to the Inner Chambers to work with the Volumes and increasing/decreasing internal acoustic treatments such as Wall lining and Wool, will allow for a greater flexibility in making a Design perform and integrate into the Designated Room.

I am a Electrostatic user as my go to Speaker, but I can happily listen to these 3 Way Cabinet Speakers for long periods of time before I start to want to return to the ESL's.

As I was familiar with the 3 Way Cabinet Speakers Design and some of the routes the design had evolved.
I think the fact I paid £150 for the 3 Way Speakers and it took a 6 Hour round trip to pick them up and get them home from the Vendor,
has been money and time well spent.

As a prompt to the OP, I have met quite a few Speaker/Designer Builders,
and it would seem to me that from ' little Acorns, grew mighty Oaks'.
Have a go and see where it takes you.

" anybody can be a speaker designer"
" it requires no qualifications"
" there's no right or wrong way to do it"
"It can potentially make you rich"

Oh this is a joke (troll)

I don't see how this benefits the audio community.

Is @kenjit for real?  While most here are teaching, learning, helping each other out, seems @kenjit is yanking our chains for his own amusement.  If a child craves attention he often acts up to get it - an immature trait in adults.

I often pondered, "Why do malicious people enjoy causing others discomfort/harm?"  I've concluded:  The need to feel in control likely stemming from deep disturbing feeling that he is not in control.  People, things, and/or situations are controlling him and he feels helpless.  Not wanting to be a victim any longer, he turns to be the controlling aggressor.

@kenjit - it's insulting to insatiate that most audiophiles are duped by marketing  tactics - most of us use our ears to evaluate sonic quality and our heads to evaluate price/performance and the quality of the component.  We do not part with our hard earned money so easily.
Kenjit you constantly besmirch the reputations of all speaker companies, stating that they all knowingly rip-off their customers. How is that level of trolling even allowed on here?  Clearly you have not listened to all the top performing brands. That’s obvious. Don’t lie. You have not heard ANY of the best designs I’m betting. Yet you conclude they are all bad because you THINK there are design flaws is each. What a waste of everyone’s time to hear you complain about poor performing speakers you’ve not heard. You need help. Until then I hope you get banned from this site for your trolling comments that unfairly bash speaker companies.

+1
I e-mailed the moderators awhile back and shared with them about 15 comments he had made here. He got banned but only for a month.  Came back was decent for awhile now its all the same trolling.  Speakers suck, we’re all idiots.

And watch, this is the the post that will get deleted.
Speaker design is like that for sure you basically design a speaker and if it is well received you can start a company around it. It is pretty much that simple that is how all the great ones started and if you make the entire speaker yourself you really have something because people will want your drivers, cabinets, and crossovers. It can be a very lucrative business if you have a good ear and are technically savvy.
Kenjit you constantly besmirch the reputations of all speaker companies
Rubbish. The speaker companies should be held to account for all the claims they make about the performance of their speakers and the high prices they demand. The fact that they refuse to do this deserves condemnation. They cannot be allowed to escape scot free under the pretext of besmirchment.

You have not heard ANY of the best designs I’m betting.

The best is a matter of taste. Wrong again.

@speakermaster
Speaker design is like that for sure you basically design a speaker and if it is well received you can start a company around it.
Which is a confirmation of what I have said in this thread.
So you want these companies who are ripping off their customers held accountable because they don’t live up to the performance claims they make? Name them! What brand and what performance claim did they make that they failed to meet? When did you own this speaker? Where did you buy it? What system were you driving it with? Give us specifics. You can’t. Just like I said before and you ignored- you have not listened to any of them. You don’t know anything about loudspeakers. You just want attention. I would normally skip posts like this and not engage a troll. But it bothers me to see manufacturers denigrated without cause. No company deserves to have their reputations challenged with your baseless claims.
Hello,
You are correct. There are a lot of ways to skin a cat. I also feel it is amazing how many designs they come up with. What I also find amazing is how many big name speakers leave so much sound on the table. GR Research has improved so many speakers. If he can see the flaws then so should they. SVS, Klipsch, Martin Logan and the list goes on. What I recommend is you design it, send it to GR Research to perfect it. I would create a really nice two way book shelf speaker. It will be easier to ship. Once you produce it send it around to the You Tube influencers. Start with Darko. Good luck. I hope you succeed.
So you want these companies who are ripping off their customers held accountable because they don’t live up to the performance claims they make?
You cant have it both ways. If you think these speaker companies can make whatever claim they like, and design any speaker they like without being criticized, then so can I!

Name them! What brand and what performance claim did they make that they failed to meet?
I would rather name a speaker company that can't be criticized. The trouble is I cant think of any!

I would normally skip posts like this and not engage a troll

That is just a poor excuse to avoid a discussion. What is your definition of a troll? Your definition of a troll is anybody that says anything bad about something even if its true. Your definition of a troll is someone that says something that upsets you.
Unfortunately, your definition of a troll means that there is no way to express criticism and the only way to avoid being a troll is to be a yes man. That is unfortunately true of 99% of forum users on here. I am in the 1% that dares to be different. If that is what you call a troll I am proud to be a troll. Lastly, note that being a troll and being a BRILLIANT audiophile are not mutually exclusive.

All the best.
“The fact that @kenjit refuses to do this deserves condemnation. He can not be allowed to escape scot free under the pretext of besmirchment.”

there.....fixed it
