Your favorite obscure song

What song in your music inventory do you consider a barely known hidden gem? Like a well kept secret know only to a few that you can listen to over and again.

For me it's 'Roads to Moscow' from Al Stewart's 'Past Present and Future' album.

The music, the lyrics, the story it tells is- to be just slightly hyperbolic- brilliant.

Check it out, especially if your a WW2 history buff.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.😁

“Chester & Lester “ entire cd .,,,( Chet Atkins & Les Paul duet on their guitars )

Removed my favorite music post...because...it’s music? I love the way a mere mention of a song can be censored. I'm going to ask folks at Audio Circle and other forums if this happens there.

Ok, well my NEW favorite song is  "God Bless the U.S.A." by Lee Greenwood. Will that survive the censors? Oh sweet destiny, please accept my humble submission.

@dweller Good call on Pretty Ballerina. Great old song. I think I was probably in 8th grade. Loved it.

I can't narrow it down to one favorite but Fisher "Never Say Never" from the True North album is really good. I also like how they covered "Cats In The Cradle" on their Acoustic Cafe 2 album. I think the whole CD is good, pretty much the same for True North.

Never been a big MIchael Jackson fan but his video "Man In The Mirror" is very good. Without the video, maybe not as great but a powerful video. OK, nobody asked for videos. Sorry, had to mention it.

@hilde45 ,

Now it’s just getting ridiculous. The pendulum has swung way too far of center.

Loved your song choice by the way...

@thecarpathian - I hear you on Roads to Moscow; first Al Stewart I ever heard, and the voice, the lyrics, and that haunting melody - just superb.

@winoguy17 - Don't Ask Me Questions is awesome; I remember when that first came out; been a GP fan for a long time and was at that live show they put out from '79 at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco.

I’m going with a trio of anti-war songs that deeply touched me when I first heard them, and still do to this day:

“Come Away Melinda”, Uriah Heep

”Golden Ribbons”, Loggins & Messina

”I Come and Stand at Every Door”, The Byrds

Obscure in USA but not in UK:

One of the best rock songs EVER: "The Riverboat Song" - Ocean Colour Scene

"Changing Man" - Paul Weller

@77jovian ,

+1 for 'Come Away Melinda'.

Also, Uriah Heep's 'Lady in Black'. Simply outstanding!

@thecarpathian

Right on, “Lady in Black”, and just two more Heep essentials for me,

”Tears in My Eyes” and the classic, “Gypsy”.

@77jovian ,

Just listened to Lady in Black for the first time in years and it reminded of all the great music Uriah Heep made.

The lyrics, the musicianship: they're one of the best bands of that era and in rock history. I don't think they ever attained the heights they deserved.

I don’t think that “Don’t ask me questions” is obscure, given that he plays it at every show since it came out.  For me, GP’s most obscure, never played, rocker is “Clear Head” off Stick To Me.  Wow, that is a great one.  Check it out.  Early GP & Rumour angst.

But my immediate reaction to the question is “Sufficiently Breathless” by Captain Beyond.  Great tune.

Hotel Uzbekistan by the Stimulators

great music and a good workout for your system

@hilde45

I’ll second that, the version of God Bless the USA done by US Soldiers on Fox News is especially excellent, look it up on YouTube, wish I could find it in a hi-res format..

Who else is loving the constant full screen pop up ads that you have to constantly dismiss, but you can’t because it links you to Amazon over and over... Thanks greedy Audiogon guys

I’m getting f****** sick of those pop up ads!

My song is when the lights go down by Prince.

You definitely have a problem with pop-up ads.

New member, first post. I very much enjoy the dialogue and interplay amongst the members it seems to know each other really well.

Band - The Tangent

Album - Proxy

song The adulthood lie

Meadow - Liam Gallagher

If you live je George Harrison’s slide, you’ll love this.

Sorry, but a lot of the previous songs are hardy obscure. Here's one- Bob Daisley before he moved to England--

The great Chris Whitley-- first released on vinyl by Classic Records, one of the few albums that Michael Hobson released as a first recording, not a reissue:

Go to track 8

Trixie Whitley, Chris' daughter, who did some great recordings with Daniel Lanois, she eventually left the States, went back to Belgium. This is from her tour, released as a studio EP, 1,000 copies. This one is live, from Ghent:

Cressida- Asylum- Munich-- from the original Vertigo Swirl catalog-- this is a rare record as an OG UK pressing. Influenced Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth:

Patto, second album, Hold Your Fire, Vertigo Swirl, not easy to find, with the great Ollie Halsall on guitar:

Right Back to It by Waxahatchee from the Tigers Blood Album.   Anyone ever going through the ups and downs of relationships will appreciate this song.

Bob Dylan -  "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)"

Dylan is obviously not obscure and I'm not sure that  Señor qualifies either, but it's not one of Bob's better known songs. It was on "Street Legal" which is also not one of his more celebrated albums.  Dylan creates a dark and foreboding atmosphere in the song that's almost downright frightening. One gets the sense that the singer is not going to like what the Señor has in store for him.

@whart "The Man" off of Patto’s first album is a masterpiece IMHO.

Oh, and I have the Vertigo Swirl version...

Here's two:

1. The Crucifixion by Phil Ochs sung by Jim and Jean

2. And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda sung by Priscilla Herdman

Obscure it is. I like this song by Chris & Cosey a whole lot from their debut album Heartbeat after they departed Throbbing Gristle. Listen to it! Put yourself in Los Angeles

https://youtu.be/MbC9HaEA0Rk

So many great songs by Darrell Scott.

Also love Transdermal Celebration by Ween

Lera Lynn’s cover of Ring of Fire is so sexy. It just smolders. So hot. Sensual voice Great guitar tones too. Highly recommended

Pet Shop Boys - Relentless. A special limited edition EP that was released with Very in 1993. The limited edition double album was released in a plastic 2-fold Lego-like CD case and featured experimental songs recorded in 1992/93--many without lyrics. They never re-released it (streaming or vinyl) until 2023 for its 30th anniversary.

My apologies to those of you who are contributing to this thread - my remarks were arrogant and condescending, which is normally not my style.

@whart ,

Everyone who’s been here a while knows you’re a good egg.

We've all at one time or another posted something a bit out of character for us.
