I'm here for the enthusiasts, not the snobbery

Couple of threads have shown up lately. "Should you be an audiophile if you..." either have a certain type of gear, have a certain amount of money, or don’t make your own.

I personally reject all of that. I’m here for the enthusiasts, and those who suffer. That is, people who are enthusiastic about listening to music via electronics and those who are suffering with problems who need a little help. That’s how I try to build a community.

Also want to point out, again, that this hobby was built by hobbyists and tinkerers. The range included backyard self-electrocuting iconoclasts to scientists in acoustics and electrical engineering. I’m happy to welcome them all.

Laslty, I want to say something about the Porsche metaphor:

1 - All Porsches are ugly. This is an indisputable fact no one wants to talk about and means all debate needs to stop right there.

2 - Any motorcycle is more fun and exciting than any car.

Thank you for reading this and I’m glad I had a chance to nip these conversations in the bud. << evil troll laugh >>

My wife and I ride. That’s how we met,in a motorcycle meet up group. We now have four bikes. As I got a little older, and my body broke down a little more,I told my wife I needed to get something more comfortable,a bagger. She immediately said go for it. The only condition was I couldn’t sell my other bike. I really did want to sell it,and she put her foot down and said “absolutely not!” Boy,did I find the needle in the haystack or what?
"...if you say Porsche cars are ugly is that why some car makers aspire to look a like cars..."
Some women aspire to look like Kim Kardashian.
...people who ride them know all about it and really don’t need a "Church Lady" cabal to remind them.
They may not need a Church Lady, but do they need a priest?

There’s a self important wimp factor among people who feel they have to point out how dangerous motorcycles can be...people who ride them know all about it and really don’t need a "Church Lady" cabal to remind them. In 2019 NYC had 28 bicycle deaths and 128 pedestrian deaths with multiples of that in serious injuries...stay inside Kaitty, and get the interns to loosen the restraints and put you near the window...not too close...careful...
??? I thought s a forum was for music enthusiast what has cars and motorcycle's  got to do with it seeing as all are commentating on it to the person who started it all I have to say is you must have Sh-T in in your eyes if you say Porsche cars are ugly  is that why some car makers aspire to look a like cars and as for the motorcycle's ONE you DRIVE and ONE YOU RIDE on comparison.

ps i ride to
I think all cars are basically pretty ugly, never understood the attraction to them.  But I'm a bicycling kind of person.

A guy in my Receiving department has dabbled with audio stuff in years past, and has clearly drooled at the goods that come and go for me as I try and trade audio stuff.  Then one day I asked him how much he had spent on cars in his whole life (he's 58, I'm 61).  He scratches his head, says he doesn't know for sure, but it has been a lot (he drives a new, fancy Mustang now).  I have only purchased brand new cars in my life, because I know their service record.  I have spent less than $100k total for the purchase price of all of my cars, as I tend to drive my Tercel's and Camry's into the ground.  I save my dough to treat my ears!
And I ride a super-sweet custom titanium ride to-and-from work.  I'm sure a motorcycle can be thrilling, but it can't compete with your all-body joy of flying through the air in your own power (with sensible brakes, both front and rear!).

Nice post Erich.
If you want excitement take a load of gasoline into the median grass at 60 mph.
Come back out alive unlike #3 into a Daytona wall. Like actors can go to a place to draw tears, you will always be able to summon the willlies henceforth.
I'm done with automobile romance after my first three.  I can't ride 2 wheels any more but have plenty of great memories.

Never finished with enjoying music.
Inclusivity IS the target for us.  Bragadoccio doesn't work for me here.
Sefl serving metaphors are definitely out of place.
barts,

I was referring to the Corvette comfort. I managed, with some struggle, to get into C7 convertible at an auto show. Getting out was not friendly to my knees. No idea how I would have done it from the roofed one.

Color me lucky.....never a real complaint concerning cars bikes audio.
Enjoys them all.

.."cars, bikes and audio go together because it's a pursuit that never ends."

Yep, all three, same here. Building, customizing, or using, rotate as necessary. :)

I don’t know if it’s true or not but I heard a guy got strained going through a chicken wire fence on a ski mobile at high speed. They had to pick up the pieces.
"...the Italians make beautiful cars."
At times designed by a Japanese.

Just like a Porsche, or two. Along with the Corvette?

Don't forget about T.E. Lawrence aka Lawrence of Arabia. While on his Brough Superior SS100 motorcycle he swerved to avoid two boys on bicycles he could not see after coming over a hill, went off the road, and was thrown over the handlebars. Died 6 days later. Tragic.
The Germans and British both make attractive cars, the Italians make beautiful cars.
Yes motorcycle are fun and not comparable to a car ride. Said part is facts are facts if you are on the organ donor waiting list your chances to find the needed organ increases 70 times during cycle season ( no snow). Have placed many friends in the ground from cycles at it was never them at fault. Wrong place wrong time!
I have no mechanical skills to speak of. I can barely change a light bulb. I do love music and the gear but I don't know how to work on it.
Indian Larry was a bike builder in Brooklyn who happened to like to stand on the seat of his bike.  He did it one time too many.

I still ride with a few buddies, almost never alone, a pack of Harley's at least announces their presence. I'm done with long trips and high speeds on Interstates.  But still love the twistees.  "Two dollars of gas is worth two thousand of therapy".

Yes, love cars as well, still have my first, a '68 427 vette ragtop.  And a C7 for comfort (and speed, but don't tell).
The new Porsche GT4 is a pretty car, but at $110K I won't be buying one.  Would rather trade in the C7 for a C8 Grand Sport.

Cars, bikes and audio go together because it's a pursuit that never ends. Even after you've climbed the mountain all you see is the next peak.
Good, clean fun which I will be pursuing 'till the devil gets his due.

I’ve been a motorcycle freak for over 50 years and still ride frequently (if it’s too hot I just drive an interesting car instead), and, of course, have crashed a few times (I wear lots of safety gear now...full face helmet, armored jackets designed for cold or hot, Bohn armored tights under my jeans)...I’ve also been surfing since I was a little kid and have nearly drowned in huge surf a couple of times, been saved by a seatbelt in serious car crashes more than once, went off a cliff snowboarding, and regret exactly none of any of it. I have also nearly blown myself across a room while trying to fix an amp (oops), so hey, don’t try any of these things because you can just stay inside and be safe...make some tea Kaitty...take a nap...wait...forget the tea, you could be hurt if it’s too hot...

>>>>>I hate to be judgmental but I suspect you probably should have started wearing helmets earlier in your career, you know, before all the crashes. 🤕
I disagree!

Porsche has made ugly cars - Panamera as an example.
However, I think the 928, 944 & 968 were at least meh if not ok looking!

And there are forces (e.g.  automatic transmissions) that may degrade the joy of riding in the not to distant future.
And I am with you on your other points.
" Erik- If you like motorcycles, you should visit the Barber Museum in Birmingham, AL. Most of the bikes in the Guggenheim show came from his private collection and the building he commissioned to house it has an interior layout similar to the Guggenheim. "
Fabulous place and the races are really good too. I got in there courtesy of Haas machine Tools and we also got to go into the maintenance areas where they restored the various motorcycles they had bought. First rate operation and well worth a trip.

@whart omg thanks for posting, I miss YOU ma hope this finds you and yours well
This is a funny topic and oddly related to audiophile culture.

Porsche's...really...911s are a study in slow and steady evolution. It's beautiful in that way. In the broad scheme of things, there are so many better looking cars...but so few have developed and evolved like that particular Porsche.

I think cars are generally ugly these days. Mostly because designers don't draw enough (I'm generalizing here)...and rely on computer modeling and rendering. Scale is way off.  From behind, my '68 Mustang...next to a late model Corolla/Civic...looks tiny.  That's the 'scale' issue.  It's also why we have McMansions. Scale is something Michelangelo knew something about and kids today don't. That's why most late (post 90's) cars look really awful to me.

I also think the trend in audio is to make the sound full and big. Think Macs, Primaluna.  I think the more I listen, I like the music to sound real to scale and honest...more like when I hear Audio Research.

I hope your hearing is better than your eyesight, Porsche’s are anything but ugly
Interesting.....Funny how just the mention of a word or two (motorcycles/cars) can take a post into an entirely different direction,

Hence my evil laugh. :)

I'm sorry but, I knew a guy that didn't smoke cause he didn't want to get lung cancer. One day he was in the crosswalk and a tobacco truck ran over his clean lungs and killed him.
Point is, you pick your poison. Probably safe if you stay in bed all day. But, what's the pleasure in that?  Clint said it best and it's always what I've lived by, "a man's got to know his   limitations."
For four years of my life all I had was a motorcycle. Rain or shine, for work and for pleasure. Been down a few times and once went over the handlebars. Always wanted to get a T-shirt that read, "Speed Kills...Try It."

That was when I was younger and seemed to bounce back with only some of my skin missing and waking up in bed having to slowly peel myself away from the bedsheets.

You couldn't pay me enough to ride now, at my age. Things break too easily and don't mend the same anymore. 👍

Al, congrats on the Macan. It's the best all rounder extant giving one speed, practicality and performance. I believe it's Porsche's best seller.

All the best,
Nonoise
Interesting.....Funny how just the mention of a word or two (motorcycles/cars) can take a post into an entirely different direction, not that it's a bad thing. Personal attacks and criticism are something left to other sites. The concept of this site as being one of a "community" is a good one. Everyone has their own personal opinions and whether they are constructive or not, that's up to the readers.
Audio to some is a hobby. To others it's just something to enjoy. And, to others, it's both. Some think their audio setup is entirely adequate and don't like to hear what more may be out there. They probably shouldn't be involved in this site. But, most are curious. Always looking for ways to improve. That's my way of thinking.
While many read about megabuck equipment and haven't the financial means to purchase such, they look for advice here. Here's an example...A friend, who loves performance from his cars, bought a new car a couple of years ago. He couldn't afford the next model up with more performance so he bought the one he could afford. After two years of performance equipment and tweaks his car had equal performance to the model he originally wanted. In the end he ended up with a car that was equal to the higher model. Just didn't have the means two years back. Many here approach audio in the same manner.
Just one of my, perhaps, stupid opinions.
Taste, especially visual taste, is subjective. I might think Porches are beautiful and you are ugly. There are cars that are fun and motorcycles that are not. Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong.
erik,

I have to agree with Almarg, well not on the Macan, but on the Cayman/718. If you want to say all 911's are ugly, I can definitely agree with you.

I gave up the motorcycle shortly after my first was born, trading that in several years later for the relative "safety" of amateur car racing even a bit of open-wheel, but was too expensive, and required a time commitment beyond what I was willing. Eventually gave that up to.

Then a few years ago, my friend got me hooked on high performance go-karts, and quickly had a 125cc shifter cart, and then a 250cc shifter cart. The 250cc was an impulse buy of someone who wanted to exit the sport. It is the most intense thing I have ever been behind the wheel of, and it is not even close. Sure any super-bike will out accelerate it, but that is the only place they could even come close to keeping up.

Those young fixie guys are referred to as hipsters. (no offense) The trendy bikes do look cool and sleek, but many shortly realize brakes are good to have. Then some also realize that rear brakes serve an important addition.
Post removed
isochronism,

"Track bikes have no brakes."
I was imagining regular "fixie". The one young guys who are trying to prove they are special are using on city streets. They have a brake on the front wheel. I wonder how long do knees last with such a brake-less contraption.
When I was kid, a neighborhood young man crashed his motorcycle. The gas tank ruptured, the gas flooding out and exploding into flames, melting the face shield of his helmet onto his face, badly burning it. The rest of his life had been determined in an instant.
Track bikes have no brakes. The way to stop or at least slow is to back-pressure while pedaling. Fun! 😂
Hopefully, that bicycle would have some breaks. If not, you deserve it.

In my case, to add insult to injury, I paid for that murderous thing. I rented it.
