Good choice for 20' XLR cable?

I'm thinking of moving my equipment rack to a side wall. If and when I do that, I will need a pair of 20' XLR cables to go between preamp and amp. I do not want to spend more than $1,500.00 for the pair, hopefully much less for decent quality. New or used is okay for me.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding a particular brand?

Thank you.

Recently did this but used longer speaker cables as moving the amp is not really an option.  I used Wireworld 10 series and am very pleased with the performance as well as their XLR's.  They have several lines but their Eclipse are close to your budget.  Very good cables and people in my experience!  Good luck.

I have them made up by a pro audio shop (in my case ProAudioLA) with Mogami 2549 cable and Neutrik's best XLR connectors. If memory serves, a 20 ft pair might set you back $150 or so.

I've tried only one pair of designer audiophile cables, because only one manufacturer would lend them to me in that length. I invited four friends (including a composer, two musicians, and someone in the audio business) over to participate in a single-blind test. All of us found the $2,500 designer cables far more colored than the Mogami.

I have a 20 foot run from my Hegel preamp to a Plinius amp with Tekton DI speakers.   Have used with several amps and preamps and the cable exposes the source material quality and showed the benefit of adding a power supply for the DAC.   Hands down great value - not going anywhere this is the make / model …Pangea Audio Premier True Balanced Interconnect

These Audio Sensibilities interconnects are worth a look.  7N copper and cryogenically treated.  Price is in Canadian $ so a 7m pair should be within your budget in US$.  They also have a cheaper XLR that’s about half the price of this one.

These Audio Envy interconnects have a good reputation and would also be well below your budget.

Probably can’t go too wrong with Mogami either.  Best of luck.

@lovehifi22   I have been very satisfied with cables from Morrow in the past.  They have several price points to fit your budget.  They are always on sale so never buy unless 50% off min.  They have very good customer service and will answer your emails promptly.  Well worth looking at IMHO.  Cheers.

I have Transparent Audio XLR running my top end and Harmonic Technology Truth link running bass. But honestly all you need is a pair of Mogami gold AES/EBU XLR they actually sound fantastic and are a great bargin.

It’s worth trying Mogami Platinum cables with high-quality custom-made G&H silver-pin plugs, available on Amazon with a 30-day return warranty. The only drawback is their 25-foot length. They sound excellent and perform very well. With a price of about $300 per pair, you’re not taking much of a risk by giving them a try.

2nd the mogami platnum great bang for the buck also pangea higher end and monoprice higher end 18 gauge on amazon.you can spend alot on cabels.enjoy the music and I think it more important to run long xlr and short speaker cabels that will be your best return.many reviews agree.

What are you using between your amp and preamp now? If you currently have a an optimal cable for your system, is it possible that using a lower quality cable due to the length will negate the benefit of moving your rack?

I think I'd want to try the cable before I went through the pains of moving everything.  I just went through that with my new rack.

What is your system?

DHLabs.

This is a key juncture. It is easy to go cheap because it is long. This can be false economy. You want to move it but you do not want to introduce a weak link that you later must replace. Having said that I find DHLabs to be an excellent budget cable which is an outstanding choice for some systems and a great interim step for others.

Hello and Happy New Year,

As a cable DIY'er I assemble my own cables.  Suggest that you check out Mogami 2549 raw cable at 77 cents per foot.  For XLR connectors recommend Neutrik XLR NA3FF-B (female) @ $16.66 each and their NA3MM-B (male) @ $ 15.67 each via

Easiest is going to be World's Best with Mogami.  Best would be home made with Connex/DH Labs pure silver from Parts Connexion.  Note that while I do think they sound fabulous, the single strand is a little brittle.   I've had them break at the connector after a little handling.

What I’d consider doing rather than moving the rack and potentially degrading performance with cheaper interconnects would be to buy a new rack that’s long and low — like two components high.  That way you can leave the components where they are but the components are more out of the way both sonically and visually.  Just another thought FWIW.

Another vote for Mogami - can't go wrong for the price and they're damn good cables

I had the same problem- Morrow Audio wouldn't make me a XLR cable long enough and I was getting into $10,000 territory with a custom set of Cardis. Since I'm not Elon that option got downvoted.

I read the PS Audio DIY article here:  https://www.psaudio.com/blogs/copper/how-to-make-a-50-high-end-xlr-interconnect/

I have made up a number of sets of these since my first try. I cannot tell the difference between them and my $600 1M Moro Audio XLRs.  Yes, if you have a real listening room fully treated with bespoke gear and outstanding source material plus a golden ear you would be able to tell the difference between the Mogami DIY stuff and the $10K cables.

My argument is that in a home stereo setup playing in a room with kids, dogs, furniture, Christmas trees a month a year, etc. the Mogami setup in that video is indistinguishable from the multi-thousands of dollar cables.

I've been very satisfied with Benchmark Media cables. Worth checking out. $153 for a pair of XLR cables, 25 feet. I'm using their XLR interconnects and speaker cables.

Benchmark Studio&Stage™ StarQuad XLR Cable for Analog Audio - Benchmark Media Systems

+1 Mogami

XLR cables are made for very long runs. 100' is mot a problem. Cables itself has much less effect on SQ as long as you go with a well made quality cable, like Mogami. Spending 1000s on XLR cable, IMO, is money that can be much better spent elsewhere in your system.

IF you spend a lot of money, make sure you can return for full refund.

I would get a basic pair to compare, because you might find these $25. 25lf pair is all you need

different colored ends is helpful, 25lf pair for $25.

quality construction

I also recommend Blue Jeans cable.  They will make cables for your specific length.  Their customer service is excellent.  Well made cables and connectors assembled in the US at a reasonable price.  No snake oil.  I can say the same about Pine Tree audio.  They both will work with you online to answer your questions before and after you buy.  It’s good to have Choices.

Yes for Pine Tree! I had them make me a custom length Phono Cable with my specific fittings (rca/din connector with long narrow neck to fit the arm’s long narrow tube). They were very helpful solving, making, promptly shipping it.

I mentioned the inexpensive find from Amazon above because I bought a cheapo 6’ phono cable from Amazon while waiting for a high priced much respected Ortofon Phono cable and the Pine Tree Cable.

Frankly, the $6. cheapo phono cable from Amazon sounds the same as the Ortofon and Pine Tree.

If you hear a difference, great, pick the preferred, I just think, with easy returns, a well made inexpensive cable from Amazon for comparison is easy and can potentially save you a lot of money.

Ali-Express, Temu, eBay from China or Japan, Yahoo Auctions, aleado from Japan: I have successfully used them as well, just pay attention to all the details, and watch the shipping cost as you select. Temu, you can pre-filter 'local warehouse', so the item is already in your country, you get it quickly, and returns if needed would be local.

Yahoo auctions: 1st you make an account with aleado with enough money already in it to cover your bid amount. 2nd: seller ships to Aleado (that cost is shown when bidding), 3rd: they give you several shipping methods with exact costs after they receive and inspect the item from the seller on your behalf. (there is a shipping calculator to get estimates for your address while bidding).

I would give this some serious thought. What are you using now and what would be the cost of buying long runs of your current cables? I have used short runs of Blue Jeans, Nordost knockoffs and Benchmark, but they were easily bested by other brands.
