Dryer sheets and stinky laundry detergent-free home.
Should we care if a piece of equipment comes from a pet-free, kid-free, smoke-free home?
I agree that I do not want a preamp or speaker coated with a film of smoke, but I am confused as to what a child or pet could do that would not be otherwise visible. You would see the cat scratches on the speaker grill, the dog chew marks on the rack, the iguana turds in the amplifier cooling vents. And what's a little dog hair among friends? As a 3 year old, I supposedly put my finger through my grandfather's new DIY speaker but I'm pretty sure he replaced the drivers so even that doesn't really matter. Most things will be visible and/or easily remedied. Maybe the price will even be a little lower because of the cosmetics. If it doesn't mess with function, not a big deal to me.
What concerns me more is does it come from a drunk-free, drug-free home. I think befuddled owners are far more worrisome than pets or children.
grislybutter My attempt at rhyming humor. I wrote: ”I think ending future ads with this might draw some extra interest? What do you think? “Stereo equipment in a Smoke free, Woke Free, Hot Trophy-wife home,” :)
I figured people might want to come over hoping my wife would be there. It’s just a tag line, nothing more. Don’t make too much out of it, unless you really want to… |
When i was 18 years old, i had a cat, very savage non tamed one who only sleep in my bed and lives outside... He once attacked viciously my uncle sleeping and trying to approach him... I was sad for the bloody hands of my uncle but proud of my savage cat...😊 He accepted only me and came time to time in my room for sleep and eating... He died going back in my room in a winter night waiting for me in the morning before sunrise. He died by a 35 celsius below zero in a car motor of my neighbour and badly hurted and as a block of ice when i discovered him weeks later under the snow... I like cat... But my last cat was 30 years ago... i always also had dogs and with the children and two dogs i never owned another cat... I fear that if he was free he will be hurted and it is not fun nor easy to keep a cat in jail... Dogs are more easy to tame and dogs are more willing to be tamed...
Takes a mate with me to the health of all mighty cats... 😊 |

OH,,, #45? You DO realize: he's a rather large individual, which may make his hands appear smaller. After all, were all things relatively sized...but then again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41yRZjIM_80 He IS pretty, "popular", isn't he? Happy listening! |
I was thinking more along the line of a blanket expose' of ALL porn stars. Don't think they just shoot that doo-doo they do, for poo-poo, do you?
UH.... Adam Smith? No, wait... Bill Gates? Oh, hell... they probably both had the occasional ho' sign an NDA too.

I would probably buy equipment from @kristinoem because exposure to misbehaving dogs should be minimal. |
The OP states: "What concerns me more is does it come from a drunk-free, drug-free home. I think befuddled owners are far more worrisome than pets or children." One persons Bottle of Wine is another's Oblivion and there are Plenty of Prescribed Drugs that are to be taken very regularly, which are able to do a much better Job than occasional used Self Medicated Drugs. Is Audio Equipment bought from an individual partial to a Bottle of Wine and on Prescribed Drugs an OK to purchase from Vendor or Not ? Or is the prejudice restricted to individuals that are Vendors with what could be diagnosed as a progressive problem with Alcohol, who are prone to use Self Medicated Drugs as well ? Which person should make known their Mental State / Dependency towards such substances in their Sales Ad ? Kid Free, Pet Free, Smoke Free home could mean the items are offered for sale from a non Smoking individual who is recently estranged, now living alone in accommodation where there is no room for the Audio System and it is better of sold to pay the upcoming cost of Dissolution and Alimony. Is that personal situation also something that should be made known in the Sale Ad. Alternatively, how about the anti-thesis for the sales ad. My shiny Tonearm with a $5k Cart' attached is a magnet to my Five Year Old Grandchild, I've had to stop them grabbing hold of it on more than one occasion, it is frustration when they knock the Cart's Stylus Guard Off, I think I have been lucky, hence I'm selling the Cart' just in case the worse happens at another time. Is that personal situation also something that should be made known in the Sale Ad. What ever the Sales Description and the aside information added, it is the Purchaser who needs Caveat Emptor as their best guidance through the inquiries being made and possibility of a Purchase. My Pet Hate is Vendors, which are met occasionally that try and Bully the Sale Through. Where their response to an inquiry is seen to be the reason for the sale to be Closed-Won with immediacy. These types of individual, Do Get the Middle Digit and achieve a Closed-Lost for their input. |

What's being played out at this moment, in The USA, to a tee, is the agenda described in 'The Naked Communist', published first in 1962. I read it first in the 70's and am not at all surprised at it's accuracy, unfortunately. However you choose to decorate it, repackage, or- rename it: it's the same old, tired song*. Victims and oppressors / bourgeoisie and proletariat - let's make everything equal/equitable/even, without any religion or moral turpitude, because we all descended from an amoeba anyway! *ie: Lennon's 'Imagine' Except: it's never worked that way, as any student of an un-doctored History is aware. MAKE '1984' HISTORY, AGAIN!

@lou_setriodes what is a woke-free home? How does that affect the equipment? |
The left-right division in society is only a tool for nevrotic sheep control as believed and demonstrated Mandeville ......
"A political party is a machine for creating collective passion.A political party is an organization constructed in such a way as to exert collective pressure on the thinking of each human being who is a member. The first and, in the final analysis, the only end of any political party is its own growth, and this without any limit." Then political parties must be dissolved thought Simone Weil one of the greatest french thinker.
Marx is not Stalin this is a commom place fact... How did this common place fact can contradict the facts i described about Mandeville genius creating the "market" modern idea by justifying it as the only cure for scarcity ? Marx and Adam Smith were not the genius, Mandeville was.Modern capitalism was thought by Mandeville not by Adam Smith nor Marx. Hayek pope of the neo-liberalism with 8 Nobel in economy call Mandeville his master . Do you understand my historical point ? We live in a matrix of conditioning of the mind were most people are asleep... corporate oligarchy govern how ? Exactly as Mandeville described it the first in history... Phantasm control of the masses by creating watchword as left-right and other secondary unimportant flags.
As Simone Weil thought political parties are a monstruous game played by people who had loose their free mind. Materialism created the actual techno-cult religion where the leftist people confuse their own sexual biological identity with their phantasm, why ? Anybody think that it is just a random idea appeared by chance ? Left-right political identification is a circus to distract people too lazy to think by themselves... i will stop here... I am way out of the thread matter ... but i wanted to correct a propagandist post or a bad joke with history...

"A man should live by his need, not by his greed" - Karl Marx |
You must study the real first social conditioning manual way before Marx who derive all his analysis of social classes from the "market" ideas and values and prices created by Mandeville whom Adam Smith plagiarized completely. Replacing the "vices" after the Fall and predestination background of Calvinist Mandeville by the more innocuous and more presentable idea of selffishness. Then Marx completely is derivable by the ideas from the " Doctor of the soul" Mandeville whose description of classes fit more today that at the times because they appear more evident than in 1714. Marx is intelligent but not a genius, Mandeville was way too advanced to be completely understood. Even Freud appear less a genius compared to him. ( By the way he was a psy a doctor of the soul and he cured people by listening them speak exactly as Freud will do, but he was not sexually obsessed as Freud , he was interested more by the social phantasms desires of most men like Adler )
The goal of Mandeville before Malthusian politic in the scarcity state of the industrialisation beginings and the first decade of Democracy in England was double : creating abundance with the liberalization and organization of the private "vices" for the benefit of the public "virtue", and also without the tyrannical power replaced by democracy, creating social means of control, the manual for any future economist and politician. He described if we use modern concept three classes : The criminal psychopaths , a few , who rules because they had understood how to manipulated with words programming the crowd essentially nevrotic people who dream about recognition , virtue representation , honors, medals, titles, and any created and propagated phantasms. Under these two clases there is the marginal sociopaths who dont belive in the "public honors and virtues" and who act not for power and control but only for pleasures and the vices they prefered over all . Now think about the Man who describe the best our societies , Mandeville or Marx? Why do you think Hayek called Mandeville our Master ? https://www.maggs.com/dr-bernard-mandeville-lecture-on-a-master-mind_231842.htm There was a censorship and an underestimation of Mandeville, who was forbid and put on the stake all over Europe... he was presented as a fable creator as Lafontaine and Aesop not and never as a thinker ... He was call the " man of the devil" Man devil , ... Why ? Adam Smith , Marx and even Freud , he anticipated them all in 1714 creating the concept of the unconscious with the concept of social classes as in Reich and Marcuse . Some genius are way too deep and in advance to be understood in their life time ..
" No man is here (in society) where he think he is " Bernard Mandeville 🧐

The problem with people who stink - and I would put most smokers in that category - is that they don't know they stink. The same could be said for radicals not knowing how radical they really are, but I'll stick to the topic at hand. I don't care if someone smokes on their patio but I don't want a piece of used gear to smell like smoke, and frankly I'm not sure a smoker is fully capable of discerning whether or not there is any odor on the amp/DAC/whatever it is. I have returned gear for exactly that reason in the past, thankfully the seller was honorable but it could have gone otherwise. |

Yeah Smoke Free the biggest. Twice i bought cd collections, picked them up at night ,quick cash deal.Well after getting the stuff home it stunk,i had to get rid of all the cd covers.Tacking and the plastic was no loner clear.Buyer Beware.Especially If your buy vintage stuff.Up here on Long Island you don't find that many smokers anymore but go to Louisiana and go to a bar and get ready for the 60s again everybody in the bars Smoke. Well more do then don't. |
+1 @normb Furthermore at one time I was allergic enough to cats I could tell if someone sitting next to me in a restaurant had one . I would occasionally have to move my seat. Had a roommate in college who smoked , it didn’t bother me until a girl I dated wouldn’t come over anymore because the room reeked , not of weed mind you . My vintage system is now at my son’s house , his GF moved in and she has a cat . I’ve considered taking the equipment back …… but he enjoys the luxury of a classic stereo set-up. Luxman , Klipsch etc .

Hey, if you don’t care, you don’t care. Some people think that increases value, so I always include that information when I sell gear. And I always get great reviews, because I give a damn about whether or not people like what they buy and the service they receive. Stop your judging and enjoy the hobby, that’s my advice. And, oh, by the way, sometimes kid-free means the kids have grown up and moved out, as opposed to never having had any. If you judge people by the way they take care of their gear or the descriptions they put in ads, I wonder how many real friends you have. The thing about cats and allergens is absolutely true. Bought a pair of speakers from a guy with cats once and they (the speakers) were a constant reminder that I’m allergic for at least a month. I eventually sold them, but only when I’d replaced them with something a little better. |
Guy without kids or pets is more likely to rank a lil higher w.r.t the ahole personality, i.e., guy who takes care of dependent creatures is more likely to be a nicer guy in life. If he smokes his cigars on his patio/deck/etc outside the house, it’s a nothing burger (On the same note, a guy with kids and pets won’t be smoking inside the house). If the ad says kid free/pet free/smoke free, I’d probably not wanna deal with that frigid shrew, lol |
Or incense or scented candles. I eagerly awaited a replacement Kyocera receiver some twenty years ago. When I opened the box, I was instantly able to smell the dead hippie whose jasmine incense exuded from the innards of the poor receiver. Back it went. And then there was a pair of Spendor speakers (BC1?) that had been stored in some sort of mold garden. The guy said he hadn’t had anything to do with the speakers in 17 years, and yeah, maybe they’d gotten moldy in a closet. Back they went. Eventually (after a couple of vintage receivers that died quickly), I gave up on used equipment. I’m not as audiophilic as most of you, listening mainly now on B&W computer speakers to my own CDs ripped to hard drives 90% of the time. I have tinnitus now, too, so nearfield is nicefield. |
WELL... alrighty then: Never buy Toshiba stereo equipment from certain vermin, OR- their sympathizers. ie: https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/nov/01/lockerbie.gerardseenan The only upside: the Bass CAN be explosive! |
I had purchased an amp on EBAY that said smoke free. As soon as I broke the seal on the box it smelled like a thousand ash trays. It is very important. The pet free can be important. I would appreciate them blowing out the component with a compressor. I have bought things from people that had cats that urinated everywhere in the house but not on the item I bought. It still smells like cat urine. Especially if the unit creates heat. If you want to be sure if there is a smell issue then take it over to another house and see if they can smell it. |
