Pink Floyd (Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason) with their bassist Guy Prat debuted a new song today. The singer is a Ukrainian from the band Boom Box collaborated with Pink Floyd to honor those lost in this senseless war. The lyrics are in Russian and it is a great tribute to the Ukrainian people. The name of the song is, “Hey, Hey Rise Up”
It's a noble thing that the guys are doing for sure, but like all things that Pink Floyd touch, it ends up sounding a little plodding, like a funeral dirge. His singing is really nice. I would love to see what Serge Tankian would do with this song.
Gilmour and is a good guy for sure. He has given away almost 3/4 of his fortune to causes he supports. He even sold his mansion and gave all the money to the Hoping Foundation which supports those with mental illness. Neither Bezos or Musk have done as much. Gilmour's net worth was 200 million, far less than the billions of Bezos and Musk
@tablejockey, Thanks for the info, It will greatly help me for the next time.
Yes saw this the other day. A new Pink Floyd release actually performed by Pink Floyd. Big news! They did get a bit older since last time. Oh well. So have we all.
David's daughter-in-law is Ukrainian so he obviously is very vested in this. However, he has been vested in a lot of philanthropic ventures and has an incredibly compassionate heart. Great to see some musicians putting their skills to work for the good of mankind.
What roxy54 said... Look, Gilmour is a great guy, no phony. He took care of Syd for years, no publicity. That being said, this war is ripe for celebrity feel goodness, regardless of real spiritual character. IMO, Dave is 100 percent fine here...Rock On.
@daledeee1- I don't know, but I'd like to think that somebody as socially conscious as Roger would be working on something of his own or with other people besides David (I guess they're just never going to get along, sadly) to help them out; haven't been to his website, maybe it says something there.
Waters is still mad at Gilmour for not being allowed to post on the official PF site. Since he left PF over 30 years ago, there is no reason for him to post on their page, but he just does not get it.
He condemned the Ukrainian war but disagrees with military retaliation.
PF and Waters had a semi recent spat over liner notes. It does get a little sticky when he was the self imposed leader and creative force on several albums.
It’s just awesome to see/hear Nick Mason and David Gilmour at it again since Endless River. They were smart enough to let to get a Ukrainian Artist to sing the lyrics. Pink Floyd as everyone here knows is also famous for soundtracks and that’s exactly what “the boys” provided here.
Plodding or not. It’s one song FFS’s.
On another topic. Sad that Peter Gabriel did not sing on the last song of the last Genesis show at the O2 Center. He was in attendance. A total reversal of the PF saga where RW assumed he was PF at point. Gabriel was never like that has always supported his fellow band mates whenever possible (Take Me Home - PC) and they him (1982’s WOMAD).
Waters is still mad at Gilmour for not being allowed to post on the official PF site.
Waters wrote most of Floyd's top recordings and he thought he was PF. Then he sued the remaining members to own the name PF. Well, it turned out he was not the sole owner of PF and that is the wedge that will never heal.
To heck with RW. Why would he care about Ukrainian women and children being blown to bits? He has been championing murderous terrorists for decades. If it weren't for his warped, evil morals, Waters would have no morals at all.
Roger Waters has always been my favorite member of Pink Floyd, and he still is.
To me, without Roger, it's the David Gilmour Band, not that there is anything wrong with that - David's great!! But I know to a lot of people, they stopped being Pink Floyd when Syd left!
According to news reports, the Ukrainian artist sang this song and PF heard it. They then used that vocal and gave it the backing track. It is a wonderful collaboration.
Nick Mason's band Saucerful of Secrets is doing a US tour this year. From what I read, it is focused on the early Pink Floyd albums before Dark Side of the Moon, when they had Syd Barrett in the group. A lot of that music is really good and should be heard.
Syd Barrett ONLY performed on PF first record, "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn". all the other song Nick Mason's group plays were originally recorded with David Gilmour. Thus, other than the first album, Nicks group is playing songs up to Meddle.
I think Syd Barrett did contribute one song--"Jugband Blues"--to 'A Saucerful of Secrets' as well as contributing some guitar work to a couple of other tracks, but there's no doubt he was mentally and functionally drifting away during this period before getting the boot for good. Tragic story.
