“BLOCK” Function?

I’ve tried a search here for such a function, and I’ve come up empty. Is there a way to block certain members? Not just from personal messages, but so they don’t show up in any topic I’m reading. Sometimes it’s nice to ask a question and learn something without someone trying to rub your nose in your lack of knowledge like a dog that did his business in the house.  I am all for learning from others. That’s one of the reasons I frequent this site. However, there are some folks here that do have vast knowledge, but are as abrasive as 40 grit sandpaper. For those folks I’m ready to throw the baby out with the bath water.

When I run into someone especially noxious, vindictively reactive & frequently so, I very occasionally use the nuclear bomb. It's this:
Rudeness is a very weak man's imitation of strength.
+1 for this. It is rampant on this site now. The majority of it here is political in nature. There are a large number of people here now on both sides of the political spectrum and none seem to recognize this in themselves. It is always someone else at fault for their poor behavior.
I'm on a few forums, not just in Audio. I have to ask: why are you making it your problem? If you insist on living your life from the outside/in & not the reverse, you're in for a world of never-ending pain.  Who's then most responsible for this state of affairs? Exactly.

BTW, DO NOT say this to someone very rude in-person. The chances of it leading to a physically violent response are not negligible. Seriously.
Having a block feature would indeed be useful. I rarely use it on fora that offer that option, but when another poster spouts 'noise' consistently, it is nice to be able to read the forum without seeing their posts.  Something that the powers that be might consider.
dougeyjones,

"I don’t have a clue what anybody is talking abt in here any more."

Neither do we.
asvjerry,

I have to disappoint you, or confirm your suspicions. I have no answers to your questions about DAC, except that it means Digital Audio Company. I do not have any idea if they get better with more zeros, but I overheard someone saying that they need 1 thrown between those zeros every now and then. Do not quote me about that, I have never verified it.

Rum is less than my specialty, but if we need to talk about grapefruit juice, I may give it a shot.
Rum could be a tweak in Any cartoon...fueling vehicle, driver, fans, announcer...I can almost see it now...

"The roar of the flaming rum, the smell of the crowd at the Captain Morgan 500mGPee!" (kept short for insurance concerns...)...

Of course, 2 'spotlight' entries would Have to be Road Rum Runner and the nemisis Wiley CoyoteHP....

OK, 'nuff 'Fun"....*sigh*....back to topic and topical stuff....
...where were we?  Ohhhm yezz....
...busily 'dope slapping' for 'thread derailment episodes'...

*seedy segue to even seedier The McLaughlin Group/AG*

"So....'glupson'...or whatever you are....WHat is all this rabblerant about DACs'?!  Whatisthatsuppose to Mean, DAC?  Digital Audible Conspiracy?!  Drivel About Carts?!  Why does 'one' cost thousands, while another chumpchange?!  Do they get 'better' with more zeros behind the second one?  Why isn't there an ADC?!  Or even an AC-DC?!

glupson:  "Well, I..."

"WRONG! So WRONG it masquerades as Right!...."

(This is followed by a full page or 4 of rant&rave that even 'Mr. K' has the sense to avoid....no performing feet on Saturday...@ Bishops' Grate....)

Now...back to 'IRL'...if you can stand it...or stand in for it...

Block if one Must.

Unless you're superstitious...there's always that little chromium switch marked "Of
@asvjerry

MC-AKA-Coyote can't win...The fantasies are Acme-tweaks !
Most of which logically,scientifically can't and don't work !
So no logic or science ?
Oh well it's arguably a great cartoon.

Cheers
That’s all true.

Individualism is a curse, the bain of humanity.

Individualism is the great gift; the very savior and core of humanity.

It’s a pretty wide swath that this individualism coin with two sides -cuts. And that's a good thing.

Spend it wisely.

The problem with the internet in general is that there are no consequences for being a narcissistic jerk. I wish I could block some posters as easily as I can block jerks on my cell phone.
Amazing how theatrical fantasies find their way into a forum...MC as an Italian 'Don'...

OK, that's enough.  That's such a 'reach', one may as well let the Coyote win one round with the Road Runner.

The only 'bat' you've to swing is the one in your mind.
Stick with audiotrivia....

Respectfully, J
For some of them it is not only virtual. I just wonder if one qualifies as "group".

That's already what happens here. There's a distinct group of alcoholics view every thread as a bar, and they are like Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas out to drink themselves to death in the virtual pub crawl to end all virtual pub crawls.

They're lucky its only a virtual pub crawl. Or it wouldn't be Leaving Las Vegas. It would be A Bronx Tale.

I'm telling ya, even with two rums in my I can write this. Someone needs to do something. They clearly are not paying me enough.

Probably shouldn’t post after hours of rum and weed but we only live once (as this particular system of memories anyway) so here we go.

Can you just imagine getting all the members here in a bar together ( all social distancing of course 😁).

5 minutes? 10?
Before the first bottle is smashed.

Sounds like a fun night out!
tyray...Sorry. I should have read your post before I posted mine. You pretty much covered everything I had to say.

rocray...I feel your pain. I have thought about this a lot. People can hide behind their fictitious names and be whatever they want to be and lash out and insult people just because they can. These same people might be respectful, polite, and courteous in person, but give them the sense of security afforded by the internet and they are buoyed by false courage. We're talking about audio equipment on these forums and I am trying to learn. I don't like to be insulted and, even more, I don't like to see others insulted and demeaned. Most of the people on these forums don't have a problem with someone having a difference of opinion -  it's how they express that different opinion. A few do it with arrogance, condescension and derision. Like you, I don't understand why people have to resort to name-calling and downright nastiness. Marxists? Where the hell did that come from. Every once in a while there are threads in which everyone gets along. Unfortunately, there are people who don't seem to want that. In the immortal words of Rodney King; "Can't we all just get along?"

Now there's an idea I can fully support. We need more broads here.
The problem with this group is many members are dealers and they are trying to steer things their way.  It would be nice to identify those who are dealers so we can see who they are and to know they are biased.  Tired about hearing about Magico speakers and Maggies.  These certainly are not the best speakers on the planet.

Actually there have been PLENTY of threads where people have gravitated to for just that reasoning.
Unfortunately it usually turns to politics and then admin shuts it down.
Then they flock elsewhere.

It would be a possible boon to the rest of the Audiogon threads if the mods did actually dedicate one thread to "whatever" and as long as no outright serious cursing or threats just let them have at it.

And yes there are actually some discussion forums that do this.
Exactly. Threads about nothing, that's what we need more of! If only we had enough of those, then maybe all the people with nothing to contribute would gravitate to them and have all their virtually meaningless virtual non-conversations on the threads about nothing. Just because people have nothing to say doesn't mean they don't deserve a place to say it.
Forum like this is a virtual bar. You can learn some things some time, but you can only chew on fuses, digital vs. analog, and cables so many times. If you insisted on only focused approach to audio, you would have much less content and less visitors. Things that interest you can be found and direct practical questions are answered directly and practically more often than not. If one insists on audio-only, subscription to a professional organization journal may be better investement of money and time.

Even this thread, with so many responses, shows that people are interested in talking about virtually nothing.
I’ve learned a lot by responding only to posts or parts of posts which addressed the question or issue I’m investigating. Posts which do other things -- I just don’t react to. I "block" myself from reacting to irrelevant or obnoxious conduct. If you take that approach, you will find that better posters will look back at the OP and offer a comment related to it. Good things come with patience.

Happily, in some cases, a poster was so generous and sympathetic in their comments, that I have messaged them to say thanks for ask a follow up question. Those follow ups have been even more educative.

*G*  Besides, glupson, I'd really feel bad about ruining your monitor and morning like that...

"Omg, they Actually let him walk around in public....." ;)
Just imagine what a mess it would become if people had the ability to post pictures.
That being said, the forum software this place is running on is straight out of the early 90’s, and should have been updated forever ago. Not being able to mute/block people, not being able to easily post images or quote people, it’s really embarrassing for whoever runs this joint. It’s like the founder paid their kid brother to set the place up in 97’ and they just never looked at it again.
I would have to agree but also point out that it is free so what can you expect and the door is always open...both ways....
@dougeyjones....and you're equally free to frequent the alternative of your choice...

I'll assume that's correct....right?

Not pushing; just pointing that out....

@jjss49 ....Mmmm, yes 'n no....some are a bid more 'staid', in some ways.  AG has a 'lively streak' that comes 'n goes...

Like anything of that nature, one is subject the 'good times/bad times' qualities.....but one is also free to walk away from the fracas....;)
There are a few people on every forum who have SO little going on their personal lives that they sit around hitting refresh all day on the forum looking for opportunities to interject. They’re usually not aware that what they’re doing is lame.

@au_lait....Fortunately, perhaps....parties are somewhat frowned upon of late...

Also, fortunately, some things aren't 'catchy'....'bad 'tude' is one....
question - is there another broad hifi forum folks feel they enjoy and learn from more, with less of the crap and ’broken record’ folks that post incessantly, saying the same stuff most of the time?

honest question -- imo i actually don’t know of another one i like better (or should i say, dislike less lol) ... most 'shared interest' forums have their share of ’characters’ that have become cartoon people for the most part
@geof3...and some forums have had pretty loose rails to start with...

Not that I will claim to not being one to causing or assisting in derailing activities; some forums could use a rock on a rail...

BUT....I've never deleted Anyone's post(s).
It's a Public Forum.  It has rules 'n regs.  It has moderators.('Adult Supervision', whether you agree about the Adult part or the Supervision part....)

As such, one can type anything that comes to mind (assuming that's where it stems from) that fits or causes such.

As long as it passes the R 'n R's, and the mods let it stand.

I'll read it....or not.
I'm pretty open-minded...even to those not.

...personally, clothes on a chicken sounds hilarious to me, but...*shrug*....first you have to catch the critter....;)
Pretty much every single thread in this forum goes off the rails... has multiple posts deleted for whatever reason, and in all of that, there is usually a nugget of good information. There is NO lack of bloviating from some, to some that are just downright nuts... but then, pretty much every forum out there is like this. This one just tends to be a little worse in this regard.
@surfmuz,

That works too! The first time someone responded to a post of mine here by calling it BS!? I have completely ignored that POSER ever since and I actually got a kick out of that poser trying to have an intelligent conversation with me in other threads! ;)
Oh, just ignore them totally, without your attention first they going crazy and then just burning out:)
