It's my given greek name. No real english translation but Frank is closest. In greek Fotis means 'light' or 'bearer of light' (fos) if you will.

Well the company needed a seven letter word that I would not forget. Ha, easy for them to say and me having short term memory issues I chose the obvious and have been using it ever since.

When I was in college I was in a grunge/punk cover band. Yes we wore flannel. Yes it's embarrassing now. Anyhow, our band was called "Splotch", for some forgettable reason. I created a bunch of flyers for a gig at my fraternity using Harvard GRaphics (any geeks remember that?). I picked a bizarre font. My roomate saw the flyer and said "Who the f*** is 'Sdatch' and why is he here on Saturday night?" And the rest is history...

When the arpa net started I used to be bell until Bell Labs became a host, then I was dbell, and remained so throughout my career. I need a user name that I can remember, but db and donbell are usually not available when I apply; dbphd usually is, but not in the case of Audiogon.

I would like to change my user name to db93108 (my ZIP code), and I don't understand why Audiogon doesn't permit such a change.

Cool,long running thread. My user name sounds like I stuck a number in front of my name to differentiate from others of the same name, but the "50" actually means FIVE-OH, as in Ford Mustang 5.0L. The other crazy hobby that is a blackhole for hard earned dollars. :)

My favorite kind of live performances are rock-a-billy bands (e.g., Twistin' Tarantulas, Lee Rocker, The Paladins, Frantic Flatops, Belmont Playboys, Rev. Horton Heat, etc.) Their performances are consistently: energetic, honest, wild, rough, silly, swingin', sweaty, and rockin'. Black leather, long-neck beer bottles, chains, ... oops! I think I just got a chubby. And my first name ain't Billy, but Dan.

Mime is basically my first name in Greek,only a little mispelled and that's because I registered once with Audiogon with my name spelled correctly,then a little while later I forgot my password,and so I had to register a second time but with a variation of my name ,as the first one would not go though.That is my story and I stick to it.

Years ago a girlfriend and I visited an aquarium. In one tank were huge groupers slowly meandering. I stopped in front of it and started imitating the slow mouth pursing movements the fish were making, and the biggest one of all came right up to the glass in front of me and we spent several minutes communing like that eye to eye. My girlfriend, from a country where people are a bit more inhibited in public, was duly impressed by this "crazy American". She started calling me Grouper. Later she married me. She still calls me Grouper. The 52 came from my year of birth, and also my age when I first started using this screen name on the internet.

It was back in '97 and an AG staffer sent me an email after viewing my classified ad on rec.audio.classifieds to notify me of a new website called Audiogon...who else remember the days of buying/selling on usenet, the old audioreview website that really rocked for used gear, and audioweb? Anyways, it was a free sign up so I said why not, not knowing years later the site would actually turn into the success story it has. Filling out the signup form I was listening to Coltrane's Blue Train for the umpteenth time and the thought occurred to me that each time is as good as the last, therefore I must be a Coltrane one (person), and 13 years later Coltrane1 is still chuggin' along buying gear! Wow, that's like over 20% of my lifetime of which many hours have been spent here trollin' for new gear! Do I need to get a life or what? :)

One of my friends used to spurt out "a buck-two-eighty-five and some change" when talking about the cost of anything. It wouldn't all fit so I abbreviated it a tad. It was either this or "chowderhead", after our first cat, now long deceased. Chowderhead is more fitting at times.

My username sounds suspiciously like what my mother used to call me, although I think there was another syllable in the middle somewhere...

My handle comes from the world of horses. In the show ring, five gaited American Saddlebreds are ridden & judged at the walk, trot, slow-gait, rack and canter. The horses proceeed from the slow gait - a slow stepping pace - directly into the rack, which is judged at speed. The Announcer will call "rack on" at the command for the gait. It is the flashiest, most exciting andmost demanding gait these horses can perform, the ultimate in that breed of horse. Hence Rackon.

Mine is based on my childhood experiences. My stepfather, a part time stand in for Santana in San Jose California would show us kids his reel to reel tape machines and bonogs, congos and other instruments and play us some of the session tapes from clubs and such. I remember him telling us about feeling the music and how it could make you feel alive and how powerful it is. He also stated that the musical journey was a lifelong event for someone interested in music. Sadly, he passed away in the early 90's and since then I always thought of music as being a passion and a lifelong journey; hence "Audioquest4life".

My sister is still in touch with Santana and meets the Estovan family occasionally. She is a dedicated singer on the West Coast and has fame on the original Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack, No Intermission with the group 5.0 and now solo and part time singer which have included players like Elton John, Pablo Cruise. I play trumper part time, but cannot sing, and dogs, birds and cats all run when i even try, so my contribution is to keep music alive by involving and welcoming others to become inteersted in music all over again.

My sister, when not performing in Oakland at any of the clubs, can be found pretty much up and down the west coast, or Italy performing. She can be found at venues and her pages have samples of her works:

Mine is my name and my wifes name. i was rushing when I joined years ago and we had a joint email account at that time with the same name, didn't put much thought into it. I actually looked into changing it a few years ago but got sidetracked. I don't think I can anyway. It's really kind of cheesy and has no relationship to the site or hobby. Makes me look like a good husband! I wonder if Audiogon would help me change it if I come home and my stuff is in the front yard...again.

Mine is a play on Seurat, the french painter - when I first got online, back in the early 90's on Prodigy, it was bounced so I went with Cerrot. It has been my online name ever since.

In the early days of importing Avantgarde hornspeakers - 1999 or so - I used the screen name of hornguys.

Resigned as the Avantgarge distributor in late 2005.

Inquired later as to whether or not I could change my screen name. Audiogon said no - so hornguys it remains.
