My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Nothing is above anyone’s paygrade if you work hard at it and doing things right without hurting anyone along the way. People who "steal" their way through life eventually get their casket or inmate number along with the orange jumpsuit. Better to sleep good at night knowing the cops are not going to be knocking on your door one day. I could not live this way.
Hell, if I am being honest here, I have thought at one time or another throughout my life
" man I could take this and nobody would ever find out" but then my mind says " yea take it and youll pay for that ten fold" so I just say to myself nah im good and happy with what I’m blessed with.

Actually, here is a true story: I think I was 17 ?
I remember going to the atm to deposit money that my parents had given me and the guy in front of me withdrew money and forgot the card inside and the ATM was asking " do you want to do another transaction? So I withdrew 500 dollars (that was the limit) and I went home with the money that belonged to someone else. Fast forward 3 weeks and my car was broken into and someone stole my CD player (Clarion cd player with a remote control ) and so I ended up having to pay for a new cd player, and tbe deductible plus the glove compartment they damaged. I think it was like $1,500 dollars total?
After that day I realized what I had done and how life was showing me that what you do wrong will come back to you.
Just remember, You put your mind to it and things can happen. Life has mysterious ways of working for us all.
I started with an onkyo receiver and Polk audio lsi7 speakers and well the rest is history.
You can do it, remain positive. You just gotta want it and it can happen.
Best class d I have ever heard ? I gotta say this is the Merrill audio amps... Merill audio element 118s just mauled my rowland 925s. Each person who sat in my room was unanimously choosing the merill. Unfortunately there is this stigma with class d amps that doesn't allow manufacturers to make more of these designs. I even heard the new rowland 925 replacement will be class full ab instead of what they did before. I support class D but I'm a small fish in the pond and that hurts many others.
So you all know my pick on the best amp for the money but have you wondered what has been my personal best preamp for the money ? I will make a video about it soon.
Audio Research Ref 6 can now be had for half the price of the 6SE and is astonishingly good. I recall you having one so that’s my guess.
WCSS, Congrats on your thread surpassing 10,000 posts. Viber6, congrats on contributing a full 10% of these with over a 1000 posts to this thread and NONE to any other. We appreciate your untrammeled and single-minded obsession
Been learning/striving to listen at lower volumes. It's a struggle b/c when it sounds so great the ears and heart naturally crave more of it. Listening to favorite music at a benign ~75 dB just does not cut it for me oftentimes. I might as well listen to headphones.
That being said I have been noticing with my recent round of adjustments, I'm really enjoying the life at these lower levels. I read somewhere if you listen lower day by day the ear/brain adapts...so here's to that!
Yesterday I measured ~80 dB C-weight slow, with peaks around 85; this was fairly loud and represents my new "happy place"; This was with my latest obsession: bluegrass-ish music.
If I play high dynamic range classical it's hard to get accurate readings as the "at the chair" range is about 20dB--meaning 80 avg 100 peaks- meter on c, fast/max to catch the transient. I am pretty sure no lasting ear damage is being done in these low duty cycle relatively loud passages.

Prior to this it was easy to do 85-87 dB C-weight slow, with peaks 95 dB for rock music.

Speakers are about 9.5 feet apart firing mostly at my ears (toe in) and my head is about the same distance to the plane of the speakers.

@dpac996
Nice. I am slowly trying to get used to lower listening levels but it will take me some work to not want to crank it up. My issue is when I like something, I want more of it and that is in life in general so that’s why I end up with louder sessions. I need to slowly go away from that though. Not sure i could ever do 70db though...

The better and more resolving the system, the easier it is to listen to it at low levels.
My issue is when I like something, I want more of it and that is in life in general ...
Understood. And of course, there's nothing like cranking it up!
The better and more resolving the system, the easier it is to listen to it at low levels.
Without having ever really made a comparison, I would have guessed that a more resolving system would sound somewhat thin at low listening levels.

I have a pretty resolving system. I am around 8 feets from the speakers ( Dynaudio Special 40 with a subwoofer), so it’s kind of near field listening. I don’t need to crank it up too much to get detail. The Special 40 are crazy resolute speakers, as their crossover is first order and the drivers have very powerful neodymium magnets.  Add to that the fact my system is pretty simple with the dac module inside my preamplifier. Using Shunyata noise reduction powercords, Ztron xlrs, and Nordost Leif Series speaker cables contribute to the high resolution I’ m getting..
I've got the triangle set-up with my speakers. 10'2" from voice coil center to voice coil center and 10'2" to my ear. Towed in.
I'm not sophisticated enough to measure scientifically. I do like my music very loud. I turn it up when guests are over. When the walls start to crack I know that's the right spot. The broken window must have been too loud.

I tell my guests not to pay attention to the spot lights coming through the window or the police at the front door.
WC, how the ARC Ref6 SE preamplifier compares to the Luxman C-900u. Is the Lux up to the challenge ?
Funny you ask about the ref6SE. I actually had people make comments on youtube about wanting a shootout of the ref6se vs luxman 900u with the luxman 900u amp. People want to see these two preamps go toe to toe using the 900u amp. I plan to do that video at some point this week and let them go to war.
The ref6se has about 120 hours i think? Not sure if it is indeed a fair comparison, but what the heck, why not do it? it is part of the fun to see how things stack up even though in some cases it might not be in the best situation.
As far as electronics are concerned, i think i am set for now. I was thinking of bringing the vivaldi transport which is a boat load of money, but i just can’t get myself to spend that kind of money to play the 50 cds i might have?
So, i am starting to shift gears (mentally) and want to bring a taller speaker in my room. I am not there yet, i don’t even know what it will be or if i will even materialize this thought. So far, all i have really contemplated over the last 24 hours has been:

Sonus Faber Aida
Martin Logan 15a
Magnepan 20.7s
Dynaudio Confidence 50
Vivid Audio G1 S2
Tidal (not sure which one)

Granted, this list changes daily so some of those models might not be relevant in a few days.
i also wanted to stay away from the ultra expensive offerings because that is stuff that i can't get rid of later on. There is stuff out there that i want to try, but i have to stay on track and remember that all of this stuff eventually has to be gone so i can try something else. I WISH i could bring the big von schierkert, but i have to remain grounded and know that some stuff isn't really to play with. Yes, that is EXACTLY the word i was looking for: "play". Some stuff out there isn't for you to "play" with.
@whitecamaross
I understand you wanting to stay away from the expensive stuff. But a tall speaker that sounds very good is the Alexx. Very high resolution but in a totally different league than DAW or Alexia 2. Also, I've heard the Alexandria XLF a number of times (taller like the Alexx) and it isn't anywhere close to the Alexx.

I replaced my entire system (minus power cords) around a year and a half ago. As I've replaced power cords, added a EtherREGEN, etc, the resolution is so good that I can listen at levels significantly lower than I used to and am equally happy; really just much more happy. @jetter  - it is pretty amazing that this is happening but I really enjoy listening a lot lower than I did with my last system. Maybe my last system just needed a lot of volume to be satisfying. I can say now that I can listen as long as I'm allowed and I never get fatigued. In the past few months I've had many 4+ hours sessions with at least one at 6+ hours. I just get up to eat or hit the restroom cause things just sound so good. Listening in the 50-60s db range with peaks probably low mid 70s. WC, I know you have a highly resolving system. I'm just adding observations of my experiences with my gear in my room.
Sweet spot 10 feet from speakers.
High 60’s with peaks low 70’s-75 listening volume.
https://images.app.goo.gl/cqQn5RrDYkS72Wq16

Absolutely go Dynaudio Confidence 50. Look at those midrange driver  magnets. Focal and Magico must be shaking when they see this.

And we already have people voting on the luxman 900u preamp on YouTube lol..

Man I wish I could post music from Fleetwood Mac... It's so easy to pick out the differences for me when I listen to their music.

It's too bad you're just looking at current stuff, since you want to try taller speakers. It would be interesting to get your impression on how Dunlavy speakers (ie SC IV, or SC V, or SC VI) compare to what's available today.
I told you all... Full luxman combo is no joke. If you have a different preamp and it is not at the level of the audio research 6se, all you gotta do is watch the video to realize that if the luxman sounds better than the ref6se (with 900u amp) then imagine how it would sound in your set up if you have a preamp of a lesser caliber than the ref6se...
whitecamaross... The Acoustic Zen Maestro loudspeaker would be on my short list also for anything near a reasonable price to work with. Robert Lee is a genius! You can thank me later...8)
WCSS prueba Purist LE DIAMOND EDITION, mucho más barato que Odin 2 y estoy casi convencido de que ganará
Luxman C900U all the way.  More there there, more rounded voice, more air and atmosphere, more microdetail.
Wow whitecamaross, I must chime in on your accomplishment to achieve, I believe, the most responded to thread on AG. And your articulate, intelligent and committed manner of participation.
No one has ever kept such a thread going for years.
I have only read the first and last pages and know that this is so.
The complex and thoughtful evaluation of SS amps that launched all this is also to be praised. By the manner in which you write, it is clear that you know of which you speak. Certainly, a challenge for any amp are the ML speakers although not as much as other planar speakers as your ML is a hybrid. But generally speaking, tube amps are not the best match with planars although I once heard a great match of an older pair of ML hybrids with a Dynaco ST 70!In my experience, it is quite obvious that an amplifier can only be judged by the speaker it “pushes”. One can say these are the two hands clapping in any system. I will enjoy going back and reading more of the 10,000+ posts and your 1000+ responses!
To me it sounds like the piano pedal is 10% partially pressed with the ARC as compared to the Luxman; just sounds a little heavy
Coming soon:
i will be releasing a video focusing on the worst amplifiers i have ever owned. I will not be talking about anything else other than amplifiers. i am putting a list together as we speak and please remember, this is MY PERSONAL opinion based on comparisons that i have done against other amplifiers i have owned.
Parasound just came out with their New Top of the line power Amp....$8,500...
New Parasound JC1+ amps are mono blocks.....that is $8500 each....$17K for the pair.
Are you using an iPhone to record these videos or a professional video recorder?
I like the Audio Research better than the Luxman preamps.  I hear the Luxman as being midrange-centric at the expense of the HF,   The ARC shows more details/enunciation in her voice with more sibilants but nothing excessive.  The ARC sounds more lifelike with less coloration than the Luxman.

I like the recording of the voice which is a good demo piece for your comparisons.  Even though some music may tempt you to crank the volume, on this meditative recording, the voice at live, natural levels is about 75 dB or so.  If you push the volume, she will sound bloated and lose focus, out of character for this music.  If a solo voice is natural at 75 dB, a chorus of 10 voices with be at 85 dB.  In a more impassioned piece, a solo singer could reach 90-100 dB on peaks, so the right SPL depends on the character of the music and the number of performers involved.

@ kren0006

I agree about the pedal grip on the piano on the Luxman. However do we know how firm the original grip is on the person playing the piano to know which one is more natural? Now, I will say this the Luxman has more decay in the voice and notes fade away longer. Both pre-amps sound damn good! However the Ref6SE could totally open way up after another 300hrs.

Luxman is my dream setup!

I don't say it just because I own it, but in case anyone may have missed it, this is the 5th time I own luxman and it never ever disappoints.
It occurs to me that given the recording/reproduction chain that we are hearing these A/B comparisons through--the microphone and recorder, YouTube, our desktop speakers, etc., that in real life (i.e. actually in the room) the Wilsons might be a little too much of a good thing.
@sqitis,
I know because I was the one playing the piano! Luke, I am your father!

No, you’re right, in all seriousness. I’m actually probably an ARC fanboy as that’s what I have (lower end) but I thought the Lux just sounded better to me, granted on my imperfect (to say least) playback options and the 5 minutes I spent listening, haha.

But that’s what this is about - WC gotta keep churning and comparing - it’s what he was born to do. Full burnin be damned - show gotta go on.

I always figured my next system would be ARC and Wilson based on my trajectory (it’ll be awhile, sigh, a long while), but now I’ll for sure give Lux consideration as well.
Beethoven, in his later years, could only hear the music in his head. Best example of truly low level music appreciation. Very economical as no audio gear required. Comparisons not required nor possible.  Ode to Joy of audio bliss.
@WC I love your experiments and with your new room.

If you are interested in trying new thing from smart designer check vinnie rossi. Every audio journalist swear by it. He build unique Preamps and lately amplifiers.

Very interesting your trip on this road for the amplifiers !! Very illustrative it has been. Use Pass at the moment, and the only thing that regrets is that when you had the XS 300 you have not used them with the pre also XS, there you could have extracted 100% of the potential of the same! I had the XP 30 a few years ago and currently use the XS, the improvement was formidable, I have them with Wilson Sasha 2, power XA 160.8 Esoteric K 01 X limited Edition source and clock G 01X, Shunyata Triton V2 filter, Transparent REF XL cables and Opus, plus Purist Canorus, I highly recommend the Stillpoint Ultra 5 and 6 as well.
The subject of cables was always very controversial right here in the audiophile community, there are people who do not believe !!
Just wanted to let everyone know that i have not been listening to music lately. i have been doing a projector shootout instead:

Sony 695ES vs Epson 6050UB.
I am not about post a video about this since it is not audio related. I have not listened to music since my last video. Next video might be the Shunyata Denali 600T vs Audioquest Niagara 5000.
Let me know what components i should connect into them and which i should leave out.
@WCSS

Around a year ago we had a heated discussion about the 'rule of thumb' that states 50% of total money spent on a system should be spent on speakers.....you were in favor of that rule and I was not. In the last year with your system consisting of an Aurender / dCS front end, Audio Research ref 6&10 and Luxman preamps, amps....(insert amp name here) and Nordost Odin cables. Just wondering if you still feel the same way? I am completely aware that a fantastic system can be built using that rule.....just not the kind you've been listening to lately.

Good to read another pleased Transparent Ref XL/OPUS owner.

Happy Listening!
whitecamaross

I enjoyed the 5 worst amps video. Hard to imagine that people own Boulder?

Happy Listening!
Good day, very interesting that shooting Shunyata vs Audioquest. I would like to know what you think. I have in stock a Niagara 5000 that I bought 2 months ago and I also have a Shunyata Triton v2. I look forward to your reviewto ...
