anyone else getting phishing popups ?

I got the fake Mcafee popup this morning.

Just clearing your browser cahce will usually clear it.

Open your browser

hit CTRL Shift DEL

Hit the "Clear Data" Button

Worked for me.

I've definitely had fake ads show up when I'm on my phone. They pretend to be from TMobile or Verizon but are actually from a 3rd party.  Pretty creepy

I think I know what you are talking about, but I may be totally off, because this is what I see when browsing Audiogon. The pop-ups you are seeing is advertising. Phishing is generally referred when the site asks you for your Personal details, bank/credit-card information etc. Of late on audiogon, I have been seeing advertisements "drop-down" from the top or "creep-up" from the bottom. And sometimes there is a box in the middle of the screen with a X button to close it (just like on smart phones). I believe this is how Audiogon makes money.

Many other sites also employ these techniques to generate revenue. These are based off the recent search you might have done or some other cookies on your computer.

I don't get any pop ups at all. Try using AdBlock or Ghostery (if you're not already) to see if it helps. I just use their free versions and they work fine.

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify it is not just a popup, or any legitimate advertising, but an actual overtaking of the entire webpage and a redirect to a different one. The Audiogon tab gets removed on my Macbook, and a different one appears. I am no expert, but I believe this is what it is called:

Yeah, I find these types of ads intrusive and very annoying. Just do what the review sites do and run ads down the right side of the page where they’re seen but don’t infringe on reading content on the site and/or require the reader to have to close it out. Argh! I’m all for A’gon running ads to make some $$$ off this valuable discussion forum, but I really dislike the way they’ve chosen to implement them. I’m gonna try the ad-blocking software recommended by @nonoise — thanks for that! Haven’t had the pleasure of the pop-up McAfee phishing garbage yet, but for those who have are you using Apple or PC (sounds like OP is PC based)? I use Apple and wondering if that may be helping with this or if it doesn’t matter.

You just missed my last post, but I am on a Macbook running Monteray 12.6.9. Here is a dropbox image of what it looked like when AVG caught the malicious redirect: AVG called it "URL: scam" you can see the Audiogon background as AVG didnt allow the redirect.

At least one other has seen this "hijack" - I did report it so this one is now probably blocked from happening again, but at least I did prove I am not the only one. 

I looked online and found this:
 

• Clear your system’s DNS cache to sever connections to malicious software programs
• Utilize a program or tool that deleted browser hijackers and modifications, or one that scans for and removes spyware
• Reset your browser homepage settings. In more extreme cases, uninstall and then reinstall your browser. 

Hopefully, it will help. You can also install Malwarebytes (at least the free version) to run and see what it detects.

Ah, thanks for that helpful info and for sharing your experience here so we’re aware.  It takes a village. 

I never got any publicity or pop up from anywhere and from any site youtube included...

My computer not being "magic" nor wrapped in "tin foil" i concluded that Ublock Origin and Adblock work well together with Firefox on Windows.. Simple...I never owned a Mac though... 😊

My phone is a flapping small bulky one i love from 12 years ago...I dont need a fragile mini computer in my pocket, then no publicity on my prehistoric phone...I hate so much publicity i had no TV  for decades ...

No popups, just an endless stream of inappropriate lingerie and sex toy ads from TEMU on my iPhone originating with google ads. 

I’m using Safari and Brave browsers.

Just Ads popping up on the bottom. 

My Trend Micro antivirus provides an adblocker as well so I don’t get ads. Another tool I use is CrapCleaner which is free. I run that about every week or so to clean up unwanted files, cookies etc.

I run Malwarebytes, uBlockOrigin and go though DuckDuck using Brave so I don't get many. 

I always use Brave browser for the web, McAfee antivirus scans and removes all cookies, temp files etc once a week.  Amazing how much crap accumulates in a week.

Also this computer is for email and web only.  So if it really gets slammed hard, I just wipe it out and reload.

Second computer is for "important" stuff...hahahahaha.

I don’t believe these are legitimate ads, they seem to be malicious hijacks from code unknowingly embedded in the host website- if they are indeed paid "ads" and the website owner is knowingly permitting it, that is one webpage I will never visit again!

...I get email bs near daily of this sort....one, two a day, various iterations of my e/m names...easy to pick off into the spam bucket, from lengthy addresses to bizarre typography....

If anyone can materialize a 'counter-bot' to go fry their drives, I'm your test crash dummy test pilot.... ;)

(...the fear being that 90% of the 'net might go with it....

....but the damn nest mess would simply re-appear and be worse in 24....
