Received a Bill for State Tax on An Amp Bought in Canada Last Year

Wow! The envelope said “Dept of Revenue” so I figured it may be my car tags due. I opened the envelope to find a statement that I owed $665 for “use tax” on an amp I bought last year in June.  Shocked is an understatement. Yes, I bought a used amp from a guy in Canada through A’gon. But I paid the tariff on it. Now they also want tax.  However, the amount they are basing it on is over double what I paid for the amp. But had to send it to Don Sachs for repair a few months later. So I wonder if they are seeing that as a separate purchase rather than a repair. They even charged me $43 interest which is more ridiculous IMO.
So the question...Are you required  to pay tax on a used amp or other used  items? Has anyone else encountered this? Yes, I know the states are cracking down on the sales tax. But on used items? Wow

Apologies to Admin for the last post above, as I was responding to Frank and missed it.
Won't do it again.

All the best,
Tim
How much would that be, who would decide the amount, and how would it be distributed?
Up until Reagan destroyed the middle class, wages always tracked with productivity. If they were to wave a magic wand, then everyone would see about a 30% increase in their wages, but that will never happen, dontcha know? Again, why should taxpayers pick up the tab for what employers refuse to pay, thus subsidizing the employers?
Would the funds come from families that don't work?
No, ya big silly. They'd come from the uber wealthy who've been benefitting from their decades long plan of redistribution, which has created quite the aristocracy (something our founding fathers were dead set against).
Most likely because the crowd you hang with don't have a clue about the money issue and never discuss it.
This, coming from a gold bug? You're funny.

Why do you see equity as a problem? Why do pundits on FOX and in the GOP call for defunding our military, actually oppose bills to support the cops, call our military leaders "pigs" and "stupid" and you let them get away with it? Right wingers beat and killed cops for crying out loud. Where's your outrage, Frank.

Is it because you don't watch any real news?

All the best,
Nonoise

No more discussions about Politics. Stay on topic please.

Received a Bill for State Tax on An Amp Bought in Canada Last Year
"As for my take, establish a living wage ..."
How much would that be, who would decide the amount, and how would it be distributed?
" Pay some form of child support/assistance to working families ..."
Would the funds come from families that don't work?

" As for "printing" money, how come I heard no one bring that up with the last, unfunded, 2 trillion dollar tax giveaway to those that didn't need or warrant it?"
Most likely because the crowd you hang with don't have a clue about the money issue and never discuss it.
" Look under your beds, everyone! The commies are-a-comin'!"
No need to look under the bed. They are in plain sight screaming about "Equity," "BLM," "Defund the police," and "critical race theory."

Hey pauly, did you read what I wrote after you deleted my apology, just 5 posts up? Or you that fired up that you got your post deleted thinking you’ve framed a narrative to make me look bad that you didn't even bother to take a look?

Just getting that notice that a post of yours was removed triggered you that much?

This time, I can say with confidence, that you should have read it before posting so this time, you wouldn’t look like the one with egg on your face. Nothing like having you plan backfire so bigly, eh?

Oh, and by the way, if you want to be left alone, don’t start the problem or even try to frame someone without thinking it through.

All the best,
Nonoise
Your comprehension needs lots of work. You originally stated that California’s homeless make up 1 in 4 of it’s residents.

My words were “1 in 4 homeless Americans are Californians”. That does mean 1 of 4 Californians are homeless. YOU are the one whose comprehension needs work. A lot.

Any adult with an ouch of integrity would man up and apologize for insulting me especially when it’s as result of his own mistake.
You, … well you won’t.
What a surprise.
“And now, with no other recourse, you go and enact the "cancel culture" that your side invented by having my spanking of you deleted.  “

You can imagine you “spanked” me as much as you want, but no adult considers cursing at somebody because of your own comprehension error as “spanking” anyone. Most adults would be very embarrassed by it. You’re patting yourself on you back and deflecting.
So please run along and leave me alone. I have no interest conversing with anybody who is not adult enough to apologize for his bad behavior. I suggest you should seek out  people closer to your own age.

Progressives have nothing. First of all there are no progressives. There are only Marxists, and other variations on communism. Progressive is the term they thought would work here in the US. But the same tired old ideas never will work, no matter whether called progressive or even liberal.

These terms are all either specific to their classical definitions, or else useless. But by their classical definitions conservatives want to conserve the status quo, which at the time was a royal monarchy in Great Britain. Liberal literally means free, so the Founders were liberal. Today, those who still cling to the Constitution are called conservative because they seek to conserve that which the liberal Founders gave us.

I'm taking time to explain all this to expose the lie behind the word progressive. There is nothing progressive about it. You seek to regress back to an old discredited system where one elite group of technocrats holds power and wields it over all the rest of us common folk.

Progressives have no solutions, unless you want to count the hundreds of millions of bodies and call it like they actually did, the final solution. But you want to delude yourself into thinking it is the conservatives who want this.

Nothing could be further from the truth. What are the conservative ideals, besides those enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution? Adam Smith's invisible hand. Mises hard money currency. A people who hold inalienable rights granted by Almighty God. Local government with almost no power beyond administering a legal system. Local government doesn't even provide police. That is the job of elected Sheriffs. Federal government has even fewer powers, primarily the conduct of national defense and trade among nations.

What is sad beyond words is how rare these once universally known concepts are today.
@oregonpapa
And your solutions are what, exactly

Progressives have solutions. They just have no way to pay for it other than taking it from those that have some $$$. Then at some point, after they have the tax high enough to destroy incentives, businesses and the morale of the people, the govt confiscates everything just to pay the elites at the top. Marxism/Socialism/Collectivism/Communism promises a lot and gives little except destruction of everything it touches

And so far, not one radical leftist has called me a Nazi. I feel vindicated.

"And, what's your solution to homelessness in this country?"

1.  For the mentally ill who cannot fend for themselves, reopen the mental hospitals that were closed due to ACLU lawsuits so they can get proper treatment and medication to at least lead a life without seeing and hearing demons. Hot showers and three good meals a day would be mandatory.

2.  For the addicted, mandatory rehab programs, privately run for a profit. The better the outcomes, the more the rewards.

3.  For those who have been priced out of California homeownership, bus them to Pennslyvania. Harsh winters, I know, but a nice house is around $150,000. Rent is cheap too ... especially around January or February.

For the rest who just love living on sandy beaches for free, constructing tent cities in the Mojave Desert would be a good choice. Air-conditioning and rabbit stew provided, of course.

And your solutions are what, exactly ... besides raising the minimum wage, providing a "living wage, stimulus checks, or a monthly packet containing newly counterfeited money?

guess you’re weren’t smart enough to realize one of the URL’s I posted was from the official CA government page right?
I did, and it supports what I’ve already told you. Your comprehension needs lots of work. You originally stated that California’s homeless make up 1 in 4 of it’s residents. I was the one who pointed out that that number was in the nation.

And now, with no other recourse, you go and enact the "cancel culture" that your side invented by having my spanking of you deleted.
How wonderful.

By the way, what state do you live in?
What solutions do you have to handle homelessness in this country?

Feeble.

All the best,

I just love the CA bashing from sour 🍇 folks.
Just came back from San Antonio and Austin.  Never in my entire life have I seen that many homeless and crazies.  Not Oakland, not San Diego, not San Francisco.
@djones51

Isn't all this terrible left wing money grab the OP is talking about happening in the Good Ole Boy state of Tennessee?
Yep. You are right. The thing that eludes most of us is that we've been sold out by BOTH SIDES.  That has become very clear to me.

@grannyring  & @cleeds
Indeed it is a "use tax" My question is if it applies to private sales. I think they saw a big # and a big payday for them. Oh well.
"As a native who just doesn't give up on his great state, you simply have to know what you doing here and how to do it. You also learn to deal with the homeless/ mental patients that are conveniently near your parked car."

That's a commendable attitude and I most certainly do not begrudge you in any way.
I never figured out what these complainers of California are complaining about?

As a native who just doesn't give up on his great state,  you simply have to know what you doing here and how to do it. You also learn to deal with the homeless/ mental patients that are conveniently near your parked car.

Why on earth would I give up living in a beach  city with several used record stores within walking distance?
@pauly , you really need to stop being spoon fed by your propaganda masters.

I guess you’re weren’t smart enough to realize one of the URL’s I posted was from the official CA government page right?

Nice try to save face but you were tasked with looking at other states and their situation and have yet to get back to me. Afraid to look them up?

Not at all. I’ll be doing that as soon as you list the states with "much much worse" homeless problems than CA.

which still leaves the homeless population well under 185,000. In a state of 40 million.

Which is the highest per capita rate of any state in the United States. Yeah I know, math is really hard. Don’t beat yourself up too much.

BTW I said " 1 in 4 homeless Americans are Californians.", I did not say "1 in 4 Californians are homeless"

" Taxes and cost of living is low enough for the low income to have good standard of living?????? Wow."
In some CA cities, middle income families are living in RV's as they cannot afford a home. In TX, low income families can afford to live in a home and often 2 cars. Wow indeed.

Same thought for slavery."

How you get to slavery is a level of dimness that I honestly cannot get too. Switch to decaf and try again.
Taxes and cost of living is low enough for the low income to have good standard of living??????  Wow.  That is such a mistaken false statement, but helps me understand why certain people do nothing to help solve the problems.

Same thought for slavery. the slave owners justified slavery in many ways but one was that the slaves should be happy.  We provide housing and food.  Where they came from they lived in tents and caves.  That was the thinking.  They used that just like the writer above to justify low income and poverty.

I would bet good money that that writer was never poor to make such a ridiculous insulting statement.

Most people have no real clue regarding the causes of homelessness.  just going by what they were told or read in some news paper article.

and in some states, it’s much, much worse
Go ahead, name them there states that are “ much much worse”.

(I’m wondering if you’re going name NY, OR or WA)

A lot of the homeless come here to get away from other states that treat them poorly.
FLMAO! Boy, I nearly ruptured my spleen. Yes, you treat them so well that they are forced to live in tents and use the streets as their bathrooms. You guys sure are very nice …

Using google, look up any state and their homeless rate, and compare that to their population as a whole, and get back to me on what you find out.
Something YOU should be doing.

While doing that, also look into what each state does for their working poor as well as their homeless.
In other states*, there is no such thing as “working poor”. Taxes and cost of living expenses are low enough for the low income to have good standard of living.

NOT the case in CA.

*Not including CA “sister” states.

PS: a real quick search showed your stats to be misinterpreted, at best, or an outright lie, at worse

The URLs I provide say otherwise. Just because the truth hurts, doesn’t make it misinterpretation, outright lies or “worse”.

I'll just add; 20 years ago I was trying to get a position in San Diego, but just couldn't. There was nothing available. Now, even during the the Covid scare, I'm getting head hunters cold calling me with positions all up and down the coast. They cannot fill the positions. Nobody with a grain of sense is interested in moving to CA anymore.

  • "The rest are residents who fell on hard times, mostly through medical bills that bankrupted them."

Most of the homeless population is suffering from substance abuse and/or suffering from mental illnesses of one type or another.

What are the compassionate policies being offered by the extremists on the radical left doing to solve the problem, other than to exacerbate it?

Wow.  So much California Bashing.  Most have no real clue what they are actually talking about.

Laws were passed some years ago regarding internet sales and that sales taxes had to be reported to the IRS.  Most people still don't do that by-the-way.

Also, this is one major area where internet sales prices were lower than brick and mortar store prices.  The internet seller didn't add sales taxes to the total price. So, brick and mortar stores started failing.  now people are actually complaining that there are not stores in their neighborhoods.  Go figure.

I for one prefer to do business with local brick and mortar stores, pay slightly more to have them stay in business.  but that's me.  But, it is getting harder to find them now.  Especially book stores.  Still have Vroman's in Pasadena.  Wow, what a book store.

I for one have absolutely no problem paying extra taxes for public health care and other things. I think that is what a civilized country should do.  But again, that is just me.

as far as sales tax is concerned, I know California and many other states passed laws mandating that sales tax has to be recorded and paid for new and used equipment.  I don't understand the need for sales taxes on used equipment, when the sales tax was initially paid with the original purchase.  Seems like double dipping.  I don't think this is fair.  But, maybe I'm missing something.

If a person buys something new in California, they pay the sales tax.  If they sell it to another person in California, why should there be a second sales tax?  don't get that one.

Cleeds,

I don’t think you are correct. It only applies to retail sales, even the link says this. How the heck would you pay it! Ha!  You don’t file a state income tax form. Makes no sense

Strange thing about all the money in CA; In spite of "rolling" in money, CA has the largest homeless population in the US. 1 in 4 homeless Americans are Californians.
We have the most populous state, by far, of any in the nation. 40 million people reside here and 2nd place goes to Texas, with 29 million. Put everything into proportion and perspective and your stat, taken out of any sensible context, is weak. One in four families are at the food scarcity level in the entire US, not knowing where their next meal will come from. That’s just the average and in some states, it’s much, much worse.

A lot of the homeless come here to get away from other states that treat them poorly. In fact, some of those states criminalize homelessness and they look down on them, punishing them when they can. Besides, the weather here is mostly nice, year round, so add it all up and Bob’s your uncle.

Using google, look up any state and their homeless rate, and compare that to their population as a whole, and get back to me on what you find out. While doing that, also look into what each state does for their working poor as well as their homeless.

PS: a real quick search showed your stats to be misinterpreted, at best, or an outright lie, at worse.
California has a homeless population of 0.4%, but has 22% of the nation's homeless. 13% of the homeless come from out of state. The rest are residents who fell on hard times, mostly through medical bills that bankrupted them.

You don’t pay sales tax in TN on a used item. The state made a mistake and must think the amp was new from a dealer.
Nope, that’s not how in works in Tennessee - you won’t find an exemption for used items on its sales tax website. (In fact, the state invokes especially strict rules for taxing used motor vehicles.)

In addition to its sales tax, the state also has a companion "use tax" that applies "when the sales tax was not collected by the seller on otherwise taxable products brought or shipped into Tennessee. The use tax applies to all items otherwise subject to sales tax ..."
Considering California is the world’s 5th largest economy, $1.5 trillion would put it at the top to make it the best operating economy in the world, beating out all the other countries.

Strange thing about all the money in CA; In spite of "rolling" in money, CA has the largest homeless population in the US. 1 in 4 homeless Americans are Californians.

When I bought an amp from Parts Express, I got the wrong model so it had to be sent back and I had another one sent to me. When returning it, I was told to state it was going back for repairs or a mod to avoid any hassle with customs and the whole declarations mess, and that was many years ago.

Things haven't seemed to have changed so I wonder why the OP wasn't informed about it or it could just be some overzealous official in TN.

All the best,
Nonoise
You don’t pay sales tax in TN on a used item.   The state made a mistake and must think the amp was new from a dealer.
Parts Connextion is an audio parts seller located in Canada and changes no sales tax on orders to the US. Do they have to? Don’t think so as they do not have any physical or other connection to the US (nexus)  I am aware of.

When the state cannot collect a sales tax from a seller in another country (or another state), it can impose a “use tax” upon the purchaser often at the same rate as the sales tax. And I believe this is true in a private transaction between a buyer and seller via Audiogon although that transaction and the resulting use tax is seldom ever found.  The buyer is theoretically supposed to report the transaction to the state - never happens.  It was pure (bad) luck that the tax collector found out about it.  It was probably an error in valuing the amp by a little bureaucrat in the Tennessee department of revenue, not a Qnon conspiracy of Democrats.  A lot of venting going on in these posts. Years ago I purchased an $8,000 pair of Focal speakers for $5,000 from a Canadian dealer. I may have paid customs on it, I don’t remember. But years later the California Board of Equalization caught up with me  - the purchase was traceable  - and I had to pay a Use Tax based upon the $5,000 purchase price, plus interest and penalties. No Big Brother paranoia was involved here.

I’m not sure what Tennessee requires... but... I thought they defined a "seller" as a legal business entity who sells at retail to consumers, as the type of transaction upon which they levy a sales tax.

I am unaware that they levy any sales tax on a simple sale between two private parties, in which the seller is not such a "seller" as defined by the Tennessee "Sales and Use Tax Code." With the exception of when you register a vehicle or boat from such a sale.

Further, it appears that the maximum sales tax rate in Tennessee by all jurisdictions is 9.75%. To arrive at a "sales tax" bill of $665, would imply the "retail sales price" was $6820 - which does not appear to be the case here.

I’d wonder if the "tax bill" is actually a scam!

I’d contact the Tennessee Dept of Revenue... directly... via their published phone number and ask them. I doubt you’ll find they sent you a sales tax bill for such a transaction on an amp priced as low as you suggest, which was purchased from a private party (not a retail seller).

On the other hand... if... you actually did purchase from a "retail seller" as defined by the tax code... and... the real value of the amp is as you suggest (and not $6820), then you will find the actual "sales tax" is very likely less than $50 or $60.
Isn't all this terrible left wing money grab the OP is talking about happening in the Good Ole Boy state of Tennessee? What's California got to do with taxes this Red State is stealing from it's fine upstanding citizens?
@oregonpapa , once again, you show your true colors when running away from anything that negates the dreck you put out. As much as you hate "liberal California", Rump got more votes from the state than 11 other red states combined.
6,005,961 from California and
5,844,399 from Mississippi, Arkansas, W. Virgina, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, N.Dakota, S. Dakota, Utah and Montana combined.

If you want to throw out all that support, fine with me. That, and the writer of that blog is a woman. But you didn’t read all the Bloomberg references, did you? She’s one of the best bloggers out there right now and sources her info very carefully. To dismiss outright what she had to say speaks volumes.

Sales tax was paid when the unit was New, if used then you
pay it’s insured value , for if a product is in need of repair when mailed it should be marked unit is not working in need of being rebuilt .you pay what it was insured for . If it didnot work
then never insure more-then 1/3 rd the value. I learned  this long ago dealing with the thief’s in customs ,if in Canada far worse.

It’s like trying to give a cop a ticket for Reckless Driving. AFTER they drove through 5 stop signs, didn’t use a turn signal for 12 turns AND then parked on the wrong side of the road, while STARING at their center console. NEVER once noticing EVERY citizen in the country HURDING their vehicle the same exact way..

EXAMPLE being, when people SEE people in authority ABUSE their authority, you get what you LET HAPPEN..

How many people are still doing time behind CANNABIS that were arrested by some drunkin’ A$$ who will probably go home and abuse someone else..

The good PEOPLE get corrupted by SO MANY cowardly actions and cowardly laws. VICE law enforcement is a haven for corrupt PEOPLE..
You regulate VICE, period, with reasonable taxes, SAEFTY and a HARM reduction policy to the citizen. NOT TO MAKE money.. To pay for itself..
NOT 100,000 corrupt people working VICE carrying a badge and a gun, calling themselves COPS. They are NOT, They are perverts, though..

Double tappers!! BY BY.. No more of the type of training.. You get to shoot when you have been shot at.. ONLY.. I thought I saw a ????
too BAD!! Get behind something, protect yourself.. STUPID! Just like every other citizen does with any sense.. YOU get to shoot at someone when they shoot AT YOU. NOT WITH A cell phone.

10,000 times now I’ve heard "I THOUGH...BANG"!! Not Bang, now I know to shoot back from BEHIND my car. You know like in the movies.. HARRY!! Well he might not have hidden to many times.. BUT usually he got shot at at least.. Didn't he have a jar with spent lead or something..

Catch a rapist, murder or THIEVES burning down towns...
A thief will KILL, there is NO DIFFERENCE.

In other words, DO THE HARD THING, NOT THE EASY and the GOOD citizens LIKE me will back you till the day I move on to TAX FREE HEAVEN.. Everything is already paid for.. no debt.. NO CREDIT..

Song and dance 24/7/>>>>>>

Once you tackle the hard issues the easy will fall into place.. LIKE learning a vehicle is far more likely to KILL someone than a gun..

NOW put the TWO together with a badge staring at a center console, PICKING up on local PD gossip, as they drive by TENTS and BBQ pits all over the town they are sworn to PROTECT.. TOWNS not county land or private land but in TOWNS..

The old way was simple. You don’t own property here, you don’t rent here, you don’t stay here. YOU stay on county land or camping areas, like the the friggin hobos did for the last 250 years.

I don’t care that people don’t have homes or want to work.. Go do it somewhere ELSE.. I have work for 3 WEEKS at my house, can’t find a BUM to help..

They actually use to knock on the door for work.. I NEVER turned one down. NOW they just look in my garbage can, while pushing a 1000.00 usd Lucky’s push cart.. My how thing have changed.. They use to arrest people for stealing shopping carts.. Grand Theft. NOW!! I’ve seen 10 in a CONVOY for God sakes.. They just need CB and a call sign.. OPS! They have Cell Phones..

CRAP!! Got my Tourette’s kickin’
@ earlflynn

Wow what state?
None of the ones you mention. Bet you will be surprised. Give you a clue. They have no state income tax. So instead of that they come after retired people who buy used stuff. OK Its Tennessee. 9.75% sales tax. I suppose it is a fair system but it took me many years to get used to paying a nearly10% tax on every item purchased except a RX. They/we are doing alight with that system.

Do you have the original bill?

@rsf507 It was used so I have no receipt but I did pay via PayPal. So I should be alright. And I do have the receipt for the repair.

@oregonpapa Nice links. Many if not most have no idea how much total taxes they pay. We have become conditioned to pay it. I can’t remember the site which tells you how long you must work to pay your full tax burden but many years it on into middle of May. And this is the average American. Some pay 55-60-% of their income. The founders fought a war over 3% (I believe) We get used to it because we are conditioned to do so . We call it "break in" on our new equipment & tubes.
Oh yeah, There goes my new set of tubes. Oh well. the coffers (slush fund) needs more $$$
I’ve lived in California for 82 of my 83 years, so I think I have a handle on the problem.

Here is why California is billions of dollars upside down in its unfunded liabilities: The public employee unions donate huge sums of cash to the campaign coffers of Democrat candidates for the state legislature. Once elected, those same politicians do the bidding of the public employee unions. On the side, they try to run the state.

According to the California Policy Center, California’s total debt liability stands at 1.5 trillion dollars.

https://californiapolicycenter.org/californias-state-and-local-liabilities-total-1-5-trillion-2/

To gain a real insight into the problem, go to this site:

www.transparentcalifornia.com

Here, you will find the salaries and perks for every government employee in the state including city, county, and state employees. If you want to gain insight into why sending your child to a university is so expensive, check out the salaries being paid through the University of California system.

Prepare to be shocked ... shocked, I tells ya.

Tax is usually based of a dollar amount you paid. Like 3% 6% etc. Do you have the original bill? Can't you argue that it should, if anything, be x amount?

The kicker is CA is the 5th LARGEST economy in the world. 9.75% TAX. Do you know how much money that is?

WAY to much for CA mathematicians.. For some reason.. There is so much money they can’t even count it..

I could see 2% and balance the budget. BUT they are still spending more than they are taking in.. JAIL..

Two of the largest economies in the WORLD. The US and CA and there still isn’t enough money to fill their pockets and pay our bills. How broke is that.. ANYONE else doing that would go to jail, Unless your Chrysler, GM, an Insurance company or a Savings and Loan company.. GIVE the CEOs a pat on the back and a 20 million dollar bonus..

Capitalism is the pinnacle of Western civilization.

CRONY Capitalism is the pinnacle of SATAN.. That's right "The LOVE of money", NOT MONEY..

How do you charge taxes on land that YOU own and don’t even have a road to get you there..

50% of the land in CA was taken BACK by CA after they initiated LAND taxes. 50%.

No improvements and STILL taxed..

Which one was that? Taxation without Representation. Caused quit the TEA PARTY December 16 1773.

A corporate tax to boot.. 3 pence on every pound of tea.. WHO sponsored the revolution?

BUSINESS PEOPLE!! That could add and subtract.. A long forgotten art.. Simple MATH, what a concept.. If you don’t got it, you can’t spend it..
If you don’t work for it you don’t get paid. No work, No EAT!

Weather it’s inspiration or desperation, it is still motivation. HUNGER works.. I’ll feed ya, until I don’t.
