@andy8400 -- always loved that song, and was suprised to see it tagged as a cover. Listened to both versions, different lyrics, looked it up on Allmusic.com and Ann and Nancy Wilson and Sue Ennis are credited as the writers on BeBe le Strange.. Just saying, this audiofool has a sick need to correct misunderstandings. ;-) |
Santana Winwood Whiter Shade of Pale Replying to the Original Poster. Tasty guitar solo. Out of left field. Just shows how artificial are such categories as Country, Jazz, Easy Listening etc. which were only invented so minimum wage workers could know into which section they should stick albums. Y'know back when you actually had to go to a store to buy music.

@ezwind +1 to Playing for Change series--The Weight being the best of it Not sure if Gregg Allman's "Midnight Rider" from Laid Back counts as a cover but maybe since we're stretching the rules a little? Always like Linda Rondstadt's cover of Willin", esp the Live from Atlanta version |
The entire Playing for Change series on YouTube. Amazing covers of many songs including The Weight, Gimme Shelter, Ripple, Doctor My Eyes, When the Levee Breaks, Soulshine, Higher Ground, Stir It Up, and others. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=playing+for+change |
Three come to mind, Smokestack Lightin' with The Yardbirds covering Howlin' Wolf. Burnett even said it was the best version of his song. Tje Allman Brothers Band covering Taj Majal's version of Statesboro Blues, which became their signature tune during Duane's leadership of the band. Tah dis not write the song, but listen to his version and you can see where they got theirs. Finally, Dolly Parton covering everybody, aometimes with the original artist on her new rock album.

I forgot to say that I really like Lucinda Williams’ cover of The Games People Play. At a concert back in ’99 at which Lucinda was opening for Tom Petty, she told us (the crwod) that she really like Tom Petty’s cover of (Lucinda’s) Changed The Locks. I also really like Emmy Lou Harris’s cover of Lucinda’s Sweet Old World. |
Cowboy Junkies cover of Mr. State Trooper Cowboy Junies cover of Thunder Road Linda Ronstadt cover of Poor Poor Pitiful Me I actually like Diana Krall’s cover of Desperado almost as much as I like Linda Ronstadt’s cover. Linda Ronstadt’s cover of The Waiting (Is The Hardest Part) Linda Ronstadt’s cover of Just like Tom Thumb’s Blues Chris Smither’s cover of Desolation Row Bonnie Rait’s cover of It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue Gal Costa’s (may she rest in peace) cover of It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue

^^^^^^^^ Technically speaking, no; but, that's based on a black & white and/or narrowed minded perspective. I agree that a good remix often feels like a complete reinvention of a song; and, many previous examples cited in this thread fall into that category ("Sweet Jane" - Cowboy Junkies). So, be a "rule breaker" and see what kind of reaction that you get. Who knows, it might extend the life of this thread, albeit in a slightly different direction. |
Cowboy Junkies cover of Sweet Jane Linda Ronstadt cover of Carmelita Linda Ronstadt cover of Blue Bayou Linda Ronstadt covers of way too much to list Emmy Lou Harris cover of Guitar Town Nora Jones cover of Long Way Home Lucinda Williams cover of Ode To Billy Joe Holly Cole Trio cover of Cry If You Want To Emmy Lou Harris cover of Goodbye Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson cover of Pancho And Lefty The Highwaymen cover of The Devil's Right Hand

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club covering The Call's, "Let The Day Begin"... doing your own dad's tune is always cool. Annie Lennox covering Neil Young's, "Don't Let it Bring You Down", from American Beauty Humble Pie covering Ray Charles', "I Don't Need No Doctor" - serious jam! Nirvana covering Led Belly's, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" & Bowie's Man Who Sold The World" off Unplugged Fiona Apple covering The Beatle's, "Accross The Universe" The Sundays covering The Stone's, "Wild Horses" Amy Winehouse covering The Zoltan's, Valerie - really so good I'm always looking for interesting covers... I have 100's in my collection |
Lots of great covers listed already. +1 Greg Allman, These Days, but Nico’s is my fave cover of the song. +1 for all the Johnny Cash covers. The American Recordings are sensational. Let me turn it around and point out a great cover of one of J Cash’s songs: NRBQ, Get Rhythm. Other favorites that come to mind: Beyonce, I’d Rather Go Blind (Etta James) Leon Russell, Youngblood (Coasters; Pomus, Leiber & Stoller) Beatles, Bad Boy (Larry Williams) Fairport Convention, Keep It with Mine (Bob Dylan) Sid Vicious, My Way (Frank Sinatra; Revaux, Thibault & Francois)
