@simao I agree. Dane is a great bassist, but Jimmy's playing style, tone, and lyrical soloing can't be replaced
Are there any recording artists you just can’t listen too?
For me there is one that has always been top of the list.
Edith Piaf…..l just can’t think of anything worse.
Do not get me wrong and consider my choice is in any way racist….l love to listen to music with songs in any language… Italian, French, Spanish…..
Russian and German can however be extremely demanding, but Edith Piaf (if possible in any language) is a potential harrowing experience.
Do any others on here have a similar artist, or artists that can trigger the same physical reaction?
@scott22: Consider giving "God Only Knows" a listen. Paul McCartney considers it the best Pop song ever written. It is Brian Wilson’s most sophisticated piece of writing, with a chord structure and modulation, use of inversion and counterpoint worthy of comparison to J.S. Bach. And luckily you can’t hear Mike Love’s voice.

@macg19 “misery loves company” Some things are not as bad as they look. Not wanting to be in any way too negative, but didn’t your last discussion get not one reply post? Loosen up man. Why the serious look? Are not most light hearted jokes negative? Most people love a laugh about some thing. Why not music? In maths don’t two negatives multiplied together make a plus? l make it 603 (so called) negatives on here so far. Never mind the near 26,000 views. l class that as a “hit”…...beat that Mr. macg19 (from a newbie with 1 discussion)

“it did take you 5 years to come up with it” “Now let’s see your virtual system” “5 years to come with it” You are so wrong. l joined in 2020 posted twice and was not overly impressed so l left it. This is a very recent surprise success after a near 5 year sojourn. Do some research on your Computer, iPad, phone or whatever. The let’s see yours sounds very immature. Is yours bigger than mine? My hi-fi is of no concern to others….it’s not necessary. That’s not why l’m on here. Some may consider it high end or on the fringe of that holy grail audiophile label, but I’m quite happy to not brag. I leave that to those who want to show off theirs. Free country. Personally, l never bother to look at any “virtual systems” A virtual system…. It means nothing to me. This means nothing to me. Ultravox.

Oh l forgot to add…. Thank you for posting today, it helps to keep this negative discussion in the charts for a third month. All things must pass and nothing is forever. It is an inevitability that this thread will die a natural death this month, a mathematical probability. However, these conversations have been like a roller coaster ride. Thanks also to those @macg19 “negative” people out there that have made this discussion so debatable funny and entertaining. “Are there any recording artists you just can’t listen to?” has made some readers claim they have laughed out loud ( @zx10 for one ) and another even admitted “I nearly pissed my pants” reading some of the crazy comments. As l have said before, l am sure more people like the artists mentioned than those who deride the performers. Every dog has his day and everyone’s personal opinions count. I am sure no harm done. The artists mentioned will not think for one minute to donate (to any good causes) some of the royalties earned from the said underachieving/offending songs.
@simao A little off topic but an interesting perspective. l am in agreement with you. I may be shortsighted but l can live without the visual reinforcement. Looks for me are not so important so l don’t care about what others look like. It is the end sound results that are my main concerns. Two way conversations and personal learning from actual users and using my own ears are paramount in my purchasing choices. I spend more time listening to music than anyone else l talk to. Some friends don’t even get the idea that someone can just listen to music for six or more hours in one day. Not everyday of course but when l’m in the zone it is totally focusing on the music, and the world is shut out. Yes it is interesting to see other set-ups and gear but when l am in my element and my system is doing its job right, l forget the, “is there something missing or better out there” At these times it is only ever about the music and how it revitalises and enervates me. Yes again to your interactions with others and the dynamics is rare. In my estimation however talking with “music lovers” as apposed to “audiophiles” involves two different conversations and interests. So l am guilty as charged as l spend very little time looking at other set ups…..l do prefer to listen up close and personal with fellow enthusiasts rather than worry about is there something that is not right, or should be fiddled with.
By the way this discussion has tonight reached 26,000 views. Must play some loud music and have a dance! Anyone for some William Shatner? The Light Years warped album?
@zx10 , what I really like about Bruce is the way he triggers the snowflake sock-puppet accounts. I am sure you can relate to that.
I was just wondering if l could inject some thoughts about the way this thread has developed. Yes the theme is about recording artists who can inject some irrational rejection or abhorrence upon certain listeners. It stretched to songs or actions that can provoke in some way a vexing physical irritation. No one has ever commented on another aspect of performance that can trigger a pushback…… Contrived videos that project a false reality. Pure trickery to play on fans who idolise their heroes. That video always makes me feel angry and indeed insults the intended audiences intelligence. Pure “hokus-pocus”….typically refers to deceptive or misleading actions words or rituals, often with a sense of magic or trickery. 🪄 By the way l like some of Bruce’s songs, but that particular video just doesn’t cut it for me. It would have been better if that segment had found its way onto the editors cutting room floor.

@mylogic , here you are:
. . . BTW, that was another part that @zx10 (aka guess who?) was turned down for.
As far as fame goes, she didn’t make out quite as good as Courtney did, but if you are interested, here is a bit more on her: https://www.qzvx.com/2021/09/20/deconstructing-a-myth-sloopy-girl-lisa-leonard-dalton/

So yes we know the 1975 “Sloopy Girl” video was staged and there was no attempt to imply otherwise. No conning the public and it is what it is, a pure mimed music video of it’s time with a gyrating wonder nox fluffy flora photogenic beaut. Now fast forward 10 years……how about U2 and Bono’s off the peg girl dancing on stage during Live Aid, London in 1985? I know he had a habit of doing this sort of thing and with the first two girls it was just his normal show off antics. l do wonder however if the moment when he “rescued” the girl from the crowd in danger of being crushed was a set up or not. The long hugging in front of the stage apron and kissing on the cheek. Was that pure amateur dramatics or was what we were witnessing a spontaneous event? I know he enjoyed it more than the band as they were a bit pissed and had to just keep strumming along. The resulting publicity stunt and time waste was at the expense of dropping a song from the scheduled play list….their latest hit single. Was that good deed we witnessed genuine or not?
Anyone????? | |
What you are saying, @mylogic , is that you prefer choreography that is poorly produced? Each to his or her own. (And that includes certain sock accounts.)
Hang on Sloopy is trash, just a payday same as Jeff Beck's Hi Ho Silver Lining. Warren Zevon, whom I highly admired, and still admire, took a payday with Werewolves of London but it was much better than the above two. However it turned off many people to his serious work which is highly underrated and frankly superb.
”What are you saying” I am not saying anything at all. Not even generalising. As long as dancing, prancing or posing looks good, l don’t care.
@waytoomuchstuff l agree with your observation. That “Sloopy Girl” with the untrained rabbits was hot and cool. Bono on the other hand. Didn’t he look like a black mackintosh brigade slithery slimy sloppy boy.
l worked at two local cinemas in the 70s. One exhibited some seedy X rated films from time to time. I observed that black mackintosh look which was quite prevalent when those films were showing. Just a bit of first hand background knowledge from my job back then. Very hard to put hand and job in the same sentence without some connotation. (Never mind very hard)
Carry on Mathew….. l would love to hear some more of that song with a rhyme here and there. May l elaborate?
I saw a snowflake living in his mommy’s basement He was triggered when he heard The Boss…. Every time he made a statement Always thought it was pure dross….
Not taking sides as l have made this song to be interpreted two ways depending on how the reader views it.
@thecarpathian Thank you. Zevon had a great sense of history with Roland and also Veracruz among others. His rendition of "Back in the High Life Again" completely outclasses Steve Winwood's version. One of my top 5 artists.
Here's another few bones for you to chew on. I also like Yes, Frank Zappa and Cream. Clapton's later albums with the exceptions of Layla and Slowhand (hate Wonderful Tonight) are very, very mediocre, My favourite guitarist is Mick Taylor, check out "Blues from Laurel Canyon". This is all REAL music, not Boss malarky.
@immatthewj wizardry…….The Twilight Zone…….skullduggery…....or sabotage? Was it you that took down your own post on June 6th? There was nothing controversial at all in it Your lead into that subject has just disappeared..vanished..like “A Kind of Magic”
Yes, l like Yes. There…. I’ve gone and said it now! Shameful with the earlier internal frictions and falling outs that were so bad, bad, bad. So bad l stopped following the group then. The fuss and bickering was unbearable and yes, it left a bad bitter taste. Two rival bands touring at one point, both claiming to be the real “Yes” Now negatives over…… Not a great album collector but l do like their live concerts on Blu-ray/DVD Live in Montreux 2003 Blu-ray (with Wakeman) for performance. Symphonic - Live in Amsterdam 2002 DVD best for sound, and the orchestra blends in so seamlessly. One occasion that an orchestra and group concert works. You can see the orchestra players actually enjoying the meeting of musical styles. In my opinion the early 2000s Yes reached the height of their writings and musicianship. A YES from me.
@mylogic , I just saw that myself. You will have to check with lord snowflake and/or the new sock puppet account on that. Those two are easily triggered. As far as lord snowflake, he probably thinks the name of the Warren Zevon album he is enamored with is Werewolves Of London (as he thought the self titled Dire Straits album was titled Sultans Of Swing because he likes the song). Anyway, as far as Warren Zevon, this link is for lord snowflake:
@mylogic , check with lord snowflake and/or the newest sock account, but I guess this email that I just opened says it all?
| |
@immatthewj Well, I guess the Mods think Brucie is a knob too! He has been voted most despised artist on this thread!
@thecarpathian Apologies both great albums.
Lord snowflake, the mods only delete what the snowflakes (and in this thread, a sock account or two) report. Since the name snowflake fits you well, wear it proudly. On The Boss and Warren Zevon: And who can take a snowflake (or AI generated bot) that thinks Dire Straits had an album titled Sultans Of Swing?
My Yes discography is primarily limited to everything before and including "Going For The One". There are a few rough diamonds after that but they lost their magic after Rick Wakeman's departure. Can you believe that Yes were paying 99 pence on the Pound in tax in the early '70s and went to playing as a resident band in a Spanish club for peanuts. FYI I have at least twenty versions of Close To The Edge including vinyl, cds, blu-ray, sacds, hdcds etc. but the best of all I've found is the UHQCD Japan version.
Now you have got me going….. Butch Bacharach should never have been given that job of scoring Boss Cassidy and the Sundunce Kid.The music didn’t fit and the song was stupid. I didn’t see any ☔️🚲 The film was a success on account of the two leading men, but l still can’t stand hearing that song. It was played to death at the time, so that’s probably the reason why? Even to this day l am sure that the film would have been much more enjoyable with an original dramatic Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams soundtrack. Much more likely to have been critically acclaimed without that awful pastiche music and the commercial sickly sweet “pop song”
@mylogic , since Snowflakes Keep Falling On My Head didn't do it for you, how about one about lord snowflake by Bob Dylan? Snowflakes in The Wind? How many posts must lord snowflake report when his Bruce Derangement Syndrome kicks in, the answer my fiend is snowflakes in the wind the answer is snowflakes in the wind. Maybe I'll work on something by Frank's Crappa for lord snowflake as well. Lord snowflake is probably busy right now listening to his rare Dire Straits album which is titled Sultans Of Swing, but when he has finished he will probably report this thread and others.

@thecarpathian “Off beat songs” l have heard that Zevon had an offbeat “Monty Pythonesque” style of wit and humour in his writings. In that case l am pretty sure he would have no cause for complaint if his music was performed on an Aldis lamp. And no one else could have any just cause to complain about it. I reckon he would have loved that scenario. Is that zany or what?

Warren Zevon uses Bruce’s leftovers?? Hardly likely, Zevon is gone and his ashes scattered to the four winds. Long gone….Ohhh arrrhh mee ‘aarty….. I know that and I’m in Devon, England……from Long (gone) John Silver territory.
Zevon would probably have found the Monty Python one legged Long John Silver football match right up his street.
