Is there a trick to dealing with the glue to the brace? Or do you just force it? I wouldn't want to damage the cabinet brace and am concerned about physically forcing the crossover. I guess if you have to rebuild the crossover from scratch, I might as well just not even remove the old one.
I was able to mod the shunt capacitor with a higher value to tame the upper midrange a bit. That's been interesting. If/when I rebuild, I might put in two or three different values with a switch between them for that shunt cap to make it be a bit tunable on the upper frequencies. |
The xover is just hot-glued to the speaker brace. I used a screw driver to gently pry the xover board off the brace. You will not hurt the brace - the xover board is very thin and would break long before the brace. |
I just forced mine out. It came out easily and the bracing was quite strong. |
Cool, thanks guys. Any preferred methods of reattaching or securing the crossover once reinstalled? Hot glue might not be the easiest for similar reasons as soldering while still attached. |
Has anybody tried the Lore with a Miniwatt N3? |
Yes, I just pulled out the crossover with a bit of force, you shouldn't have to pull too hard.
I've removed the ssg bypasses and I'm running just the kbg's right now, and it's better toned, coherant and dynamic, ie,; less detail but also less compression in the highs. Those ssg's pull out too much detail I think by compressing the highs.
a couple other things you could do; With the shunt, instead of changing capacitor values is reduced the 3ohm resistor to 2ohms. This seems to help a touch, just right for me, I did try some other value capacitors and settled on this for now. Also some additional batting behind the speaker helps alot to focus the image.
I still think if you can afford it the SIO would be synergistic with helping the soundstage and detail of the Lores, but I've never actually heard it just speculating on my SIO experience in amps. |
You're gonna need to help me out. What does SSG mean, and what is a KBG? |
Glenn Beck talks about Tekton. |
I am hoping that someone can compare these two speakers sound characteristics to those of Reference 3a or Nola . I am in the market for larger speakers than my present Di Capo i's . I need larger bass drivers of at least 10 inches and can not afford the larger Nola or Reference 3a units . Thank You |
Genjamon,
SSG is a Russian silver mica capacitor, I was running .1uf values which is a very large value silver mica. They're more detailed than any capacitor I've heard, and I have some really nice teflons. They ended up sounding compreshed and hashy after I got over the thrill of the detail.
KBG is a PIO Russian Capacitor, some say it's copper film, but I havn't taken one apart yet. I actually doubt it, Russian pio caps oil makes aluminium yellowish IME.
The KBG's mellow the tweeter a bit as well as a little more relaxed and natural sounding. Still not perfect but an improvement IMHO.
As mentioned earlier on this thread there is a hotness in the lower treble and is mistaken as the tweeter, but with the high crossover point it's more likely the upper range of the woofer as a few guys here have discovered. I reduce the resistor I mentioned even more (1.5ohm), I may try taking it out period but I'm not in a hurry to try as I think the Lower treble helps add to the "live" feel. |
This thread has died off so I thought it a good time to ask.
Who still has their Lore or what ever model? Still happy?
Same as above for Omen owners.
If you changed speaker, to what and why?
I for one still have my Lore's. I'm serously thinking of upgrading the cross overs. I bought them used so although the caps would cost as much as the speakers did, I think the end result will be better than if I sold them and spent the same amount on something different. ($1300.00) |
GLEN BECK? I was seriously interested in these speakers but hearing that the company owner is a fan boy of Glen Beck who sent him a pair as a gift kind of puts me off buying them. Usually a mistake to mix politics and business these days. I would buy these before I bought something from China but there are plenty of other choices out there of other US made speakers. Disappointed... |
It's funny how in the name of tolerance, liberals have become one of the most intolerant people in the world. It's either your way or the highway. Very very disappointed! |
01-09-13: Andysf GLEN BECK? I was seriously interested in these speakers but hearing that the company owner is a fan boy of Glen Beck who sent him a pair as a gift kind of puts me off buying them.
I never begrudge anyone their beliefs. I do not smile when I think of a world where everyone thinks like I do. |
Right on, Sebrof! Politics should have no place here. |
" I was seriously interested in these speakers but hearing that the company owner is a fan boy of Glen Beck who sent him a pair as a gift kind of puts me off buying them."
Thats your loss, and childish I might add. |
Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think the reason Eric sent Glen Beck a pair of speakers was due to fact he was a fan. Glen Beck actually referred to Eric as "some guy" and did not associate the gift with political affiliation. I am not a fan of Glen Beck; my observation is there are others that are not fans as well. Those people, myself included, are suspect of anything Glen Beck might say, therefore they may also be a little suspicious about the his complementary review of the Tektons and possibly refrain from buying them. If Eric is guilty of anything it may be he did not put enough forethought in sending the Tektons to Glen Beck because of a possible negative political connection.
I applaud anyone who takes a stand, but I donÂ’t believe Eric was making a political statement when he sent the Tektons to Glen Beck. I have a pair of Tekton Lores, if you choose not to buy a pair of Tektons based upon an improbable political connection it will be your loss. |
And if you listen to the audio recording, you will hear Glen Beck say that Eric didn't want his help in promoting his products. Glen talks about it being because of his "small guy" virtue, but I also suspect it's because Eric realizes it's not a good idea to mix politics and business - that GB support would polarize and negatively impact him through that polarization. I dislike GB's politics about as much as anyone could, but I don't begrudge Eric his beliefs, nor do I even know what they are based on simply knowing that he sent GB some speakers.
Scutterflux, thanks much for those details. Very helpful, and I'll look into those ideas a bit more myself, as I still haven't decided on a direction with the crossovers. |
Actually, the Glen Beck endorsement endears me more to Tekton products...to each his own. |
I still very much like mine.
Still want to play with the crossover too, but I'm a pretty big nerd when it comes to this stuff. I also put in a Duelund resistor, and cotton insulated wire. I'd really like to try Duelund caps, but I think they're too much for me now, I'll probably put them in my pendragons when I get them ;)
If you can afford it I really do think Erics recommendation of SIO would be the way to go, he does know what he's doing. A SIO cap in my preamp seemed to bring out more depth, soundstage and dynamics that the lores had to offer if that has any correlation. They're also very resolving in the highs and smooth in the "live" area. |

Didn't mean to get political and stir up bad feelings. It was really more of a visceral reaction. I have nothing against people supporting the Republican party. I just don't like Glenn Beck. Lots of people don't. He was fired from his show on Fox News. Even Walmart pulled advertising in the end, along with about 50 other companies. So you don't have to be a liberal not to like the guy. The audio was posted by "Clark Pace" who I assume represents Tekton. There are 8 other Tekton videos on the same site so I have to think this is something Mr. Alexander wants us to know about. I respect him for his ability to create a great product-I only question his choice of recipients of free speakers. Jealous, too! Actually, if he wants to use a Republican spokesman, he should send some speakers to Jon Huntsman. Huntsman is a much more appealing guy, is also from Utah and was a professional musician so might have something interesting to say about recorded music. Just a thought... |
Still rockin' my stock (no upgrades) Lores in the man-cave, and M-lores in the family system. No urge to upgrade here. As I write this, I'm listening to the Classic Records mono reissue of Jackie MacLean's "Swing Swang Swingin'" on the Lores. The music is dead center between the speakers, which are about 8' apart. Sounds sublime to me.
As for the Beck affiliation, I couldn't care less. I'm a Liberal myself, but I don't see what that has to do with speakers.
I told Eric that when I find a brand I like, I'm pretty loyal. I'm sure my next pair of speakers will be Tektons. |
Rischa
Have you had a chance to put the Lore & M-Lore in the same room to see what difference there is??? |
01-11-13: Andysf Didn't mean to get political and stir up bad feelings. Sure you did or you wouldn't have done it. |
Andysf, no need to get defensive about your Glen Beck comment. Your reaction was quite normal. Any fan of GB can't be all that bright. |
SIO = Mundorf Silver-in-oil, it is Erics recomended upgrade that you can purchase from him. You can buy parts and diy but for the price he offers the upgrade is nearly worth the parts alone. |
"Andysf, no need to get defensive about your Glen Beck comment. Your reaction was quite normal. Any fan of GB can't be all that bright."
And Obummer voters are rocket surgeons?
They sure are singing the blues now, and for good reason.
Shakey |
What is a rocket surgeon? |
Typical liberal response Rotarius, anyone who doesn't agree with you can't be all that bright, nice. |
Really sad politics entered here. You watch the news....politics, listen to espn....politics, you look at Facebook..politics..you pay $75 for a concert ticket...politics....now..audiogon. Can we ever escape? I find the people who are extra touchy about politics really have an esteem issue. We were at a wedding and were seated with an out of town guest (we did not know) from Washington DC. We were talking about flying into "Reagan" (Washington national Airport name) to see my Brother during the Ford funeral (lots of delays). The woman placed her hands over her ears and said if I hear that name again I will leave this conversation!! At first, I thought she was joking....nope. She was serious. She stated she never wants to hear that name again. I mean...c'mon.....let's be adults here. |
And Obummer voters are rocket surgeons? They sure are singing the blues now, and for good reason. Really? Where did you hear that? On Faux News? Typical liberal response Rotarius, anyone who doesn't agree with you can't be all that bright, nice. Liberal response? How did you arrive at that? Just because I don't care for the likes of Beck or his fans, that makes me a liberal now? Do I have to like everyone on the "fair and balanced" network to be a true conservative? I am not a leftie by any means, I just think people who are victims of relentless propaganda/lies on that channel are not very bright. I stand by my comment. |
The worse network by far IMO is MsNBC, just pathetic programing and lack of objectivity. Now back to audio topics. Regards, |
How did I arrive at that? If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck... it's a duck. |
Rotarius you make a lot of assumptions based on your attacks, I never brought up Fox News, YOU DID. I never insulted anyone by calling them "not very bright" (which you also did) simply because I didn't agree with their views. It must be hard for you to be SO MUCH SMARTER than everyone else. Does it ever get tiring to have to point out how stupid and ignorant other people are while your brilliance on every single matter is unimpeachable? |
Please, guys. If I want to read or participate in political argument, there are endless other web opportunities. We don't have to do it here, and I'd really like to continue to be able to read this thread without having to skip through endless political opinions and discussion. It doesn't in any way further our audio passions, the real reason any of us visit Audiogon or other audiophile message boards. |
Rotarius is the typical example of a liberal, left wing, arrogant, elitist snob. It's not all his fault. He went through 12 years of indoctrination in school and probably 4 more years in college. All his friends and family are lefties. He gets all of his news from the lefties. Everything he knows about life he got from lefties. He really didn't stand a chance. Instead of condemning him we should pity him. |
I really have no time to deal with personal attacks on audiogon. I have a gun show to attend today so that I can be ready when the U.N. does invade the South. Goodbye. |
Bill Ayers talks about Tekton. Now we are even...let's get back to audio |
I apologize to the other members here who have to read through this drivel to get to the good information found on this great site. It just sticks in my craw when someone who doesn't know me in the least thinks its OK to portray myself and others as "not very bright". I've never said anything negative about anyone's views as I would never consider it OK to judge someone solely on their political or social opinions. This is the last I will respond on this matter as it is not worth the time or effort to continue and again I'm sorry it got to this. |
What amplifiers are you driving your Omens and Lores with? I'm using a B&K st140 with my new Omen Defs and love the sound. |
Has anyone compared the Lore to the Pendragon? I have the Pendragon in my system now, and while I LOVE the sound, they are just too big for my setup. The 'dragons are up for sale and as soon as they sell, I plan to buy a pair of Lores. I'm hoping the Lore sounds similar. My guess is they don't go as deep and don't have as big of a soundstage, but other than that, are they close? |
01-15-13: Ecruz Has anyone compared the Lore to the Pendragon? User Gpowered owned Lores and then Pendragons. See his posts in the July 2011 timeframe in this thread. He also did a review of the Pendragons but I didn't see him mention the Lores (didn't read the whole thing) http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?rspkr&1317255195&openfrom&1&4#1 |
I had both the Lores and the Pendragons also and wish that I still had the Lores in my bedroom! If my memory is correct, the drivers in the two are the same with the significant differences being in the tweeter and the speaker size. With the smaller size, The bass on the Lore is much easier to tame than that of the 'Dragon (my main room is not treated and has a few bass nodes). And, yes the soundstage is smaller with the Lores, but other than they are very similar speakers. As for the tweeter, I preferred the single tweeter in the Lore to the three in the 'Dragon. If I were to do it again, I do believe the Lores paired with dual servo subs would be superior to the Dragons at a similar price point. |
Morganc-
I'd like to hear your thoughts on why you prefer the single tweeter.
In my room, the low end on the Dragons is AMAZING! It's just that they are so big, that they block part of our 106" screen. If not for that, I'd be keeping them.
Sebrof- Thanks for the directing me to that post. |
Hi Ecruz.
I'm not sure how/why the tweeter in the Lore is preferable to my ears....but it was. And it's been so long that it wouldn't be fair to really even write about the differences I heard as my memory is horrible! Simply put the Lore had a bit more sparkle on the top in and it wasn't "bright" in any way at all. |
Ecruz,
I am the guy that sold you the Pendragons. To me, it all comes down to priorities. As good as the Pendragons sound, I would let the video take a back seat. But that's just me since I would never mix the two in the first place. Any time you try to put the two together, one or the other must be compromised.
For example. In order to get the best movie "imaging" on your 106" screen, you need to place the speakers where they ordinarily wouldn't sound as good for two channel music. Or vice versa. You make your choice and live with it. But we shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking we can have the best of both worlds. And this isn't even taking into consideration the compromises that multi channel front end gear presents.
I hope you figure it out and find something that works for you.
Shakey |
Thanks! Waiting to sell the Dragons, then I'll order Lores. Even though the Dragons do not work, visually, in my room, I will definitely miss the sound. They are amazing! |
I stepped away from this thread for a month after making my post about Glenn Beck talking about Tekton only to come back to read some really amazing comments. Amazing in that I only mention about Glenn talking about Tekton, nothing else in my post, certainly nothing political, and then a firestorm of negative comments from some people. People who obviously did not take the time to actually listen to his comments. People who evidently are pretty closed-minded.
To summarize Glenn's comments - the audio clip runs 9:34. He spends the first minute and half simply talking about how amazing the speakers sounded to him and his staff. He then spends another two and a half minutes talking about his conversation with Eric, the designer of the speakers, and the balance of the clip is about how wonderful it is to find really good craftsmanship, and how important it is for one to find one's calling in life and then to commit to it - taking pride and ownership in whatever it is that one commits to. I figure about 6 seconds are political.
Surely, those who sniped in this thread could find common ground with those ideas?
Anyway, it's too bad the thread was momentarily derailed. I wanted to share the clip because I agree with those who think Eric is making something really special. |
Finsup I couldn't agree more, well said. |
