‘I’m an ex-audio salesman/ex-engineer”,,,, (So everybody should realize my opinion is so correct and important). |
ROTFLMAO! Engineer (recording, electrical, fill in the blank) Electrician Professional ran a business run a business build quality geometry quantum tunnel Tesla audition (you tried it, okay? Did you "audition" your car?)
|
It’s sounds like the day it was recorded. Who the hell was there that day. I guarantee most are not old enough to have attended the recording or even have been invited to. Talking about the analog days. |
@millercarbon Nope, when I hear the word salad, it means to me a mixture of various foods, generally cold and generally food in small size pieces. It could be a fruit salad, vegetable salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, potato salad, etc. Not necessarily involving a vegetable (fruit) or predominantly involving a vegetable (tuna/chicken). |
@millercarbon When I hear Electrician, I think of a licensed and certified person who can legally work with electrical components, dealing with electricity When I hear Professional, I think of someone with a professional education degree first, a doctorate for example When I hear that someone ran or run a business, I think of an entrepreneur, for profit, providing a service or product.
Some words evoke immediate images and are not difficult to assess.

@millercarbon -- I've auditioned every car I ever bought. They call it a test drive. It's always nice to know if the seat is comfortable, you can see out of it, and if the controls...as they used to say...fall readily to hand. |
it seems that the audition then marriage of a mate doesn’t guarantee good mileage or longevity. |
What are the current useless terms in this "audio world" Without a doubt, >$150 AC mains fuses, that are said to also be directional. THE BIGGEST LOAD OF ** I HAVE COME ACROSS IN THIS INDUSTRY Cheers George |

Just today I ran thru the 5-6 youtube reviewers I track. Only two I can believe and neither reside in the US. Not darkoe. |
I admit that I don’t know what “musical” is supposed to convey. Seems like it’s just a lexicalization for “I like the way the music sounds when played through this component.” But if it means something more specific, I'm open to correction. |
"a sense of air around the instruments" . Evidently the brass or woodwind players are blowing too strongly? |
Does "Old School" mean Ivy League or Oxford?
|
Old school is the Oracle at Delphi….. |

You didn't really "audition" your car. Audition comes from audio - to hear. Maybe it wasn't the seat you were interested in but the V8 rumble. |
So dancers don't audition for parts in ballets and musicals? |
Right. Well pole dancers anyway.

+1 ‘gobsmacked’. Nothing wrong with it just overused these days. I don’t see anything wrong with ‘reference’ if used appropriately. That is, if the person is saying it is their reference. Just like someone might use Budweiser as a reference for how all other beer tastes. Then they can say another beer has more alcohol, or subjectively tastes dryer, etc. Even if the reviewer suggests the gear is ‘reference’ potential for some owner, I.e. something to judge other components by, it’s still ok. But yes, used as hyperbole only, it does fit with others like ‘the best’. In other words, bastardized to imply it should be everyone’s reference as better than everything else available. A true reference could be a piece of crap, but it’s a starting place to gauge other things against. |
If using Budweiser as a reference please remember all other beer will taste.
|
Best gear I’ve ever owned, regardless of price … the only reason I’m selling after owning it for six weeks is ….. |
...well, if talking beer, local micro breweries are my favorites, especially on tap from a keg that are un-pasteurized...the idea of heating beer is a good way to kill a great beer.
|
"very neutral" - there are no degrees of neutral. |
|
|
“Bargain” for a $20,000 component. |
|
I may have missed it, but after 128 responses no mention of what is, without a doubt, the most useless term in Audio; or, at least the most misused term in Audio:
”ACCURATE”
Accurate, compared to what? The term is, more times than not, used to describe a spectral balance on the leaner/brighter side of that particular listener’s idea of what “neutral” is; whatever that may be. Nonsense! For something to be accurate it has to be so in comparison to a specific standard or, in this case, a specific type of sound. Good luck with that. However, the sound of live acoustic sound is a good (best) start.
