Does anyone listen to the radio anymore?
95% of the time in the car.  Mostly news/talk radio, KUSC Metropolitan opera and assorted new classical music releases (much like streaming).  Otherwise, no, just LPs, CDs, 78s, R2R and a few cassette tapes not yet transferred to digital.  Very ve...
Which inexpensive speaker cables...
Best inexpensive cable-Belden digital SPDIF cable.  Used until I receive my Westminster Labs Ultra carbon fiber AES cable.  $25 for a true 75 ohm cable.  I've also used Belden XLRs previously on EAR equipment.  My friend and I can vouch for the di...
Warm sounding phono cartridge
@lewn Do you have many 1950s and 1960s pressings?  I know audiophiles who have less than 100 LPs and SOTA audio systems, all repressings or mint original hot stampers.  I began collecting/listening when I was 3.  I had 3,000 LPs by 18.  I have inh...
A cable too perfect?
System matching is critical.  I never had a cable mismatch wherein the sound was only acceptable at low volumes and not at high volumes.  Until 2023, I only used tube gear.  Now I have solid state amps and phono pre-amp.   I can attest to the vas...
Replace tubes yearly?
As a blanket statement, that's stupid advice.  Tube rectifiers last 10,000+ hours.  Miniature tubes usually last 5,000 to 10,000 hours in most equipment (not necessarily AR gear).  My subminiature tubes are rated for up to 100,000 hours. Only outp...
Warm sounding phono cartridge
I have 31,300 LPs of all ages.  I used Dynavector cartridges most of my life.  I went from a worn out Benz Ruby III to a "lowly" $1100 Dynavector 20X2 Low.  Well, maybe it's not the bee's knees but it makes both my mono and stereo records sound fa...
A cable too perfect?
I had adjusted my Von Schweikert VR9 SE Mk2 upgraded speakers to my equipment and cabling for nearly a year (7 control features).  One problem I thought I had was too much bass with the 1000w powered 15" Rel subs in the rear despite minimal gain a...
Solid state amp that tube fan can be happy with?
@lucky_doggg7 Ultra thick power cables are unnecessary.  I use GroverHuffman and Westminster Labs Ultra series power cords.  The latter are 15X more expensive than GroverHuffman but are relatively thin and flexible (1/2" thick).

@viber6 I am fortunate as I am the Salon recording engineer for the Viklarbo Chamber group headed by Wendy Prober Cohen and Maria Newman (Alfred Newman's daughter and composer in her own right of many 100s of works).  So, it is a large living room...
Solid state amp that tube fan can be happy with?
I have not heard the Coda S5.5 but some audiophiles & critics swear by the excellent sound from 20 to 25 year old Coda amps.   On SoundstageUltra, the editor uses old Coda amps despite having had high end and costly amps in his many systems pr...
What were your favorite gear additions in 2024?
Radical change in 2024 (and moderately expensive) 1. Von Schweikert VR9 SE Mk2, upgraded Masterbuilt Ultra wiring, Foundation 1000w Class D subwoofer amp, new supertweeters 2. Westminster Labs REI power amps 3. Westminster Labs Ultra XLR cable ...
Which subwoofer should I get?
Westminster Labs Shockwave, currently in 12" and 15" configurations, pending or already released new 10".  Takes the monitor speakers and even full range standing speakers to a new level of fullness and openness (bass effects highs as well).  Bril...
Solid state amp that tube fan can be happy with?
How about small monoblocks weighing only 35 lbs, 100 watts 8 ohms, doubling, quadrupling in 4 and 2 ohms, only warm temp Class A. Westminster Labs REI solid state-on all the time and always ready. I used 35 to 120 watt, stereo and monoblock Class...

@viber6 100%.  That's why a fine recording can outperform a live performance for the audience/listener.
There Is Nothing Like the Real Thing - Our State of the Art
@jnovak I disagree with you. I have been performing in choirs for 54 years, often with major orchestra members (LA Phil and Hollywood studio musicians), recorded 150+ orchestral, chamber and choral productions in major venues throughout SoCal, hav...
