The science of opinion ...

Some may find this interesting (it is).

Some may find this threatening (it isn't, it is science).

Some may read it and use it to help them understand the dynamics of internet forums.

Last night I dug deep into the record vault and pulled out a real gem. It was an album recorded in 1956 on the Pacific Jazz label. The artists were Bud Shank on alto and flute, the great Claude Williamson on piano, Chuck Flores on drums and Don Prell on bass.

The album? "The Bud Shank Quartet.

Bud Shank and Claude Williamson were long-time regulars at the Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach, California during the 1950s. On their many albums, you will find some of the best West Coast jazz ever recorded.  Pacific Jazz and Contemporary recorded some of the best sound ever.

Here's a wonderful Lighthouse Allstar album.

Happy listening ...

Interesting article. I liked it.
Makes sense in a group setting (like a jury?).
Would be interested in hearing if others on this site have changed their opinion based on a statement of another poster.

Tom
"Would be interested in hearing if others on this site have changed their opinion based on a statement of another poster."
And you do not know the answer to that one yet?
I would think a poster here would be less inclined to be a sheeple than if they were in an actual setting of peers.

If anything, the nature of the internet allows one to more freely express themselves without recrimination due to peer pressure or societal mores and folkways.

Also, this hobby promotes experimentation. When one hears things for themselves, it's usually all it takes to conclude whether whatever they did was of benefit or not.

Having said that, some come here with an agenda, or develop one due to the polarizing nature of the efficacy of some products and the costs thereof.

In the end, sophistry is of use when it comes to persuading others be it online and in person.

All the best,
Nonoise
They may conclude independently whether a benefit was there or not. They may conclude there was a benefit when in fact there was no perceptible change at all. When they go online and see others doing it, it reinforces their perception. This happens often in many areas and people are 100% convinced even though what they believe is impossible.

This forum allows anonymity which can encourage less sheepleness, if not publicly in the forums, at least privately. Some protest a lot, but you see seeds of doubt or understanding every once in a while.  Also remember the majority rarely or never post, they just come to read for opinions.

>>>>Or they may conclude independently there was NO benefit when there in fact was a perceptible change. Or they may conclude there was NO benefit but their system and/or their ears failed. That’s why double blind testing is a scam.

I am starting to suspect someobody’s been following the wrong.....you know,
🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑. 🚶🏻‍♂️
I am not starting to suspect, I know someone does not understand double blind testing ... well pretty much at all.

With a large group, double blind testing removes individual bias, and performance issues, especially since you can look at group data to determine if any individual performs significantly above average suggesting further investigation is warranted.

On an individual level, if your system or ears are not good enough  ... well then double blind will prevent you from spending with your eyes on audio equipment, which is a fools path unless done knowingly, except for really cool looking turntables (which are art). You are not a fool are you geoff?
Based on the responses so far, I think one can postulate that for some, they consider the people here their peers ...

Re the op and the subject matter chosen my him:

The ass hat tries to subtly game the forum, again.

and he will do it again, in the next post or when he tries to start another thread.

see it for what it is.

Agreed. But, in an actual face to face setting, peer pressure is of a much higher import than online.

Re the OP:

He's not doing these sorts of threads because he cares about audio or high end audio or the people who desire quality audio in their lives.

Hes trying to crash it, he's trying to tear it down, he's trying to force it to follow HIS dogma. Every post he makes screams this point, either openly, or subtly.

See it for what it is.

Unfortunately this is becoming a trend nowadays in all audio public forums and social media. There is a growing group of individuals whose only hobby is polluting every single audio forums / groups they can find with terms like "slayer of snake oil", and "ABX audiophile" bs. Add here the #measurementsmorons, and you can see a full assault on high end audio.
It’s always the other guy that doesn’t understand with these people. He was sent by grocery clerks to collect a bill. 👨🏻‍🍳
Sorry to burst your bubble GK I know you think it’s all about you but the 👍 was for the OP not you. 😘

I'd expect that his next tactic would be to try and be polite in everyone's eyes..act as the harmed one... and try to label me as being anti-science for my direct mention of the subtle manipulations and obvious intent within them.
Thank you for providing a prime example of some of the things discussed in this article and similar ones ....

If I am tearing anything down, then it was teetering already. Feel free to address the aspects of what I write as they relate to audio instead of attacking me personally and perhaps you will not have to worry about something fragile falling down.

Your post suggests there is anyone "harmed". Would you care to address how anyone has been harmed and what specific actions have harmed them.

I don’t have to act as the harmed one, I am just the latest in a long string I expect of people who have been dog-piled. No worries though. Nothing you say changes the veracity of what I write and nothing, nothing I say will speak as loudly as the silence ... the silence of addressing what I say, and now who is saying it.

That silence - which you acknowledge speaks more loudly than your wordy screeds - reflects the nature of your vacuous renderings.
to the op,

these subjects and subject areas have been covered a hundred times over.

what you are, is just the next one to come along and try to raise them like a sword of justice ...one built out of your own limited understandings of the entire envelope of what is involved... in the area under discussion.

You don't know the subject, and your data and your knowledge is severely lopsided.
If I am tearing anything down, then it was teetering already.
Maybe bordering on quixotic, or even messianic.
My advice: don't go there. 👍

All the best,

@atdavid  Are you going through a loss of career or something similarly significant?

Since you started a thread on the '5 Stages' [Of Grief and Loss] should I be reading (deeper) into that?

I'm certain I do not have the technical abilities you have in specific areas...reversing this, you also do not have abilities in areas that I and most certainly others have.

My suggestion is for far softer landings and less engagement. We will all benefit. I look forward to your reasoned and measured contributions.  Thank you.

If this was true, then you would be able to easily address anything I say with some level of detail and confidence, not call me the charlatan. Again, the silence is deafening.

You also assume you and a few prolific posters here are the sole holders of audio knowledge and how dare anyone question it. There is a whole world out there teo_audio beyond these four walls.

The question is, why would anyone, anyone at all feel the need to have a sword of justice in this consumer audio market. That is just such a weird weird thing to say.

Well, that only took a week. Wrapping the same holier than thou dogma in velvet doesn’t change what it is. Your change of tactics is obvious and pretty sand lot.
Perhaps you should delete your membership again, change your user name again, and give it a third shot. What have you got to lose?
Certainly not respect.

What’s outside Pleasantville?

(Trying to stay calm and keep from revealing he was from the future) I’m from a town where the roads don’t end at the edge of town. It’s not like Pleasantville. There are some places that the road doesn't go in a circle. There are some places where the road keeps going.

Keeps going?

Yeah, it all just keeps going.

Oh come on Geoff, you love the drama. You feed it, you water it, and you live off it. You are the biggest troll of all. Not everyone is fooled.

Trying out AmazonHD via VPN myself .... this will force Spotify and Google's and Apple's hand. In some ways the best thing that could happen to the democratization of better and high resolution digital.

Remember? That's what this hobby is all about, the music.

Something I can actually partially agree with you on.
However it will require Amazon to open up their cheeks  a little and let some of the smaller devs like mConnect and other aftermarket programmers get a hold of their apk so Amazon can be incorporated into more systems.
You know, like Tidal and Qobuz are embedded in nearly every streaming hardware device out there.
Do that and yes Amazon have a chance of taking over the hires streaming world for sure.

I used to think this thread was a drama but now I realize it’s a comedy. And I think it’s funny. I’m tired of pretending it’s not. Comedy is subjective. 🤡

Good luck when you all discover you are stuck in some internet version of a Pitcher Plant.

Whenever I hear " double blind testing" I know to get the nose bleed seats ...   😎
I was thinking more of falling prey to a devious cold blooded killer. Struggling only makes matters worse.

So predictable it's absolutely boring.
But if it is all such worthless drivel I truly wonder why you keep coming back.
Glutton for punishment?
Stubborn?
Ornery?
All of the above??

Don't worry, no answer is required.

I guess you just don't get why deleting your posts is wrong on just about every level apart from your own selfish reasoning.
Carry on regardless......
We are all just fish in the sea elizabeth,
  • The first attractor is the presence of a critical mass of uncertain individuals who happen to share a similar opinion. In fact, when such a cluster of individuals is initially present in the system—either by chance or because individuals share a common bias—the rest of the crowd tends to converge toward it, as illustrated by Fig. 5-Example2. This majority effect is typical of conformity experiments that have been conducted in the past [37], where a large number of people sharing the same opinion have a strong social influence on others.
  • The second attractor is the presence of one or a few highly confident individuals, as illustrated by Fig. 5-Example3. The origin of this expert effect is twofold: First, very confident individuals exert strong persuasive power, as shown by the influence map. Second, unconfident people tend to increase their own confidence after interacting with a very confident person, creating a basin of attraction around that person’s opinion
  • Our simulation results also identified two elements that can cause such amplification loops: the expert effect—induced by the presence of a highly confident individual, and the majority effect—induced by a critical mass of low-confidence individuals sharing similar opinions. Moreover, the presence of a significant number of neutral individuals holding a random opinion and a low confidence level around these two attractive forces tends to increase the unpredictability of the final outcome [15]. Therefore, neutral individuals make the crowd less vulnerable to the influence of opinion attractors, and thus less predictable. By contrast, recent studies on animal groups have shown that the presence of uninformed individuals in fish schools acts in favor of the numerical majority, at the expense of very opinionated individuals
