The science of opinion ...

Some may find this interesting (it is).

Some may find this threatening (it isn't, it is science).

Some may read it and use it to help them understand the dynamics of internet forums.

He's not doing these sorts of threads because he cares about audio or high end audio or the people who desire quality audio in their lives.

Hes trying to crash it, he's trying to tear it down, he's trying to force it to follow HIS dogma. Every post he makes screams this point, either openly, or subtly.

Unfortunately this is becoming a trend nowadays in all audio public forums and social media. There is a growing group of individuals whose only hobby is polluting every single audio forums / groups they can find with terms like "slayer of snake oil", and "ABX audiophile" bs. Add here the #measurementsmorons, and you can see a full assault on high end audio.
To them every piece of equipment and every cable sounds the same, nothing makes a difference besides speakers and we are all wasting our time.
You are wrong @swanlee597 --- speakers are snake oil to these people too. Why pay money for a brand name speaker, when you can buy same drivers online from China on eBay and build your own cabinets? LOL!!

Oh, the acoustic panels. These morons never question those either (mostly due to their Master, The Dr. Ethan Winer). But again, only 10% of them actually have any acoustic panels, and when they do, it's just thrown out there with no rhyme or reason.
Copy / paste from that article (Dr. Ethan Winer, PhD):
------
Most $40 CD players sound exactly the same as $4,000 CD players. If they don't sound the same, one or both of them are defective or poorly designed.
-----
That's the reason he proudly displays a Walmart DVD player as his "CD player" on his site.

Of course, same holds true for DAC, cables (any cables), Amps, etc.

And he uses Walmart kiddie stools to hold his bookshelf speakers. When I pointed this out on a FB group, especially with regards how short those stools are, he told me "prove it to me that those stools have any negative impact to his system", then he called me an idiot, threw a graph in my face, etc. etc.
Ethan is in the business of selling a product --- acoustic panels. So of course he will say this and that is snake oil, simply buy my acoustic panels. It's his marketing strategy. As simple as that. Everyone in the business has an agenda. Yes, he says he sold the business, but his name, face, etc. is still in the website, and am pretty sure he is still getting paid from that business in one shape or form or another.
Are you sure you’re not Ethan Winer? I bet you are. It would be just like him to come in as someone else and say what a great guy Ethan Winer is. Give me a break.
Oh... Ethan does this all the time. Especially on Facebook. He has several fake (very fake) accounts that he posts under. It is easy to tell, as often he forgets under which account he is posting, and posts something that the "real" Ethan has already posted before (he is getting old)
Oh wow! I was not aware this was going on from ten years ago. This is copy/paste:

Quote:
I assume after Ethan was unsuccessful in his attempt to intimidate me he called Stereophile and likewise threatened a lawsuit.

No, he didn't threaten a lawsuit. He did try to go over my head to get his forum posting privileges reinstated, and when that didn't work, canceled all of Real Traps advertising in Stereophile. He then filed a complaint about being harassed on this and other forums by posters like "Michigan J. Frog," with the New Milford, CT police department.

He is now trying to get me to delete the posting in which his being banned was announced: http://forum.stereophile.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=82939&Main=82939#Post82939 . I have no intention of deleting this posting.

John Atkinson
Editor, Stereophile

I don't remember David. Names of the fake accounts, are typically one of those with first and last names both sounding like first names.
Oh trust me on this.... I know from experience, at least on various FB groups, Ethan has several fake accounts. I reported one of them to FB, and it was deleted.

I have nothing against Ethan's acoustic panels. My "beef" is with him saying everything else is snake oil.

My acoustic treatments are via GIK. They were very helpful in helping me out with choices and placement.
I am sorry Ethan. I don't set up professional studios. I am just a commoner, a hobbyist. This is not a job for me
Ethan is a nasty little old man. And dangerous. One time in a Facebook group, he got into an argument with me simply because I mentioned a reasonably priced Schiit DAC (of course, all DACs sound the same to him, he has graphs to “prove” it). Then he pointed out his 4,000 Facebook followers, proceeding to “subtly” ask me where my house is 🤭😬
Why different name? Isn’t that what this Ethan man was accused of doing a few posts above?
What are you talking about? It was a Facebook group. On Facebook, I have my full name. It’s Facebook. On forums, like here, I use a handle. Just like you. What part of this is so mysterious for you?

Do you use “glupson” as your name in your Facebook account?
his marketing strategy is not that dry.
Agreed! As they say... "it's the money you moron!"
It's not "Whiner". It's Winer. Ethan Winer.

I have read his audio expert book. It's on Amazon. Some very good advice from Ethan in there. Especially on the acoustics realm, room treatment. While I disagree with him in terms of "everything else is Snake Oil", I have to give him credit where he deserves it. As they say, "listen to the wisdom of an old man, not to his farts".
That's great. I have nothing against people not using social media, like Facebook.

I was simply answering his question why I use my real name on facebook vs. a handle in forums.
You questioned the reasons why I was using my real name in Facebook and a handle in this forum. And I explained you why. What else do you want?
No. I do not have a Facebook account. However, if I did have it, I would use glupson. Why do it any other way?

So that your family, friends, co-workers, etc. know who you are, and interact with you?

Is your only social media purpose trolling the audio forums?
Ohhhhh.... look who is counting. You joined last year and you have almost 3,000 posts. I joined in 2005, and how many do I have?
So... who are you @atdavid? What is your real Facebook name? Or at least, can you share your handle on ASR forums? I can clearly tell you are not Ethan, but I am pretty sure you are one of the other Masters
And I like Ethan. I have blocked many obnoxious fake scientists and puppets in Facebook, but I have not blocked Ethan. I will never block Ethan, no matter what. I find my exchanges with him very amusing. And he does not block me, whatever I tell him. It must be a thing 😉
+100 @thecarpathian !!

Pretty sure fake David was sent here from Ethan or ASR forums like a Terminator to save our poor souls from the evil.

These guys are in a mission. They will not stop until all of us have cheap $50 China DACs, tiny pro speakers on kiddie stools from Walmart, Crown amps from Amazon, zip cord for cables, and Chromecast for streamers.
Their mission is precisely that: burning down the entire audio industry to the ground.
Most of the music I hear comes from an Internet radio via $50-100 Bluetooth speakers (iHome Arc and JBL Charge 3) or through a Walkman driving earphones. At least I have a few pairs of earphones. Today is a little different, I turned on amplifier and music server which, again, has been playing Internet radio. I can tell the difference in sound, but I cannot tell you one is better than the other one when music actually plays.

That’s OK glupson. We’ll all get old someday. Enjoy as long as it lasts. Cheers. Good night
And how do I behave in Facebook Tommy? What have I done to you? I have never said anything negative about your Cherry amps.
If I have any goal at all, it is to help other people not fool themselves."

Yeah... that’s always what they say when they post this stuff all over the Internet. Good Samaritans saving people from spending their money.

But is it really the reason they do this? Some of them full time, in all audio groups. Do they have an agenda? Some type of guerrilla warfare marketing for whatever they are selling, be it acoustic panels, cheap class D amps, questionable cheap China copy cats?

Or is it simply sense of irrelevance and self-awareness steaming from inability to own and enjoy decent gear? Just ask them what their system is. This question alone will drive them crazy and over the cliffs
Me too. A long, long time ago. But I grew up.

Are you going back to the boom box now @glupson ? Might as well. We cannot possibly tell the difference in a scientific, controlled ABX test 😂😉
Then how do you know what I share in that group about Ethan? That’s the only place I have shared my exchange with him.

What is your name?
+==== I come to forums to help, even discuss with the vast majority that are truly interested in the best sound they can achieve for a given dollar=====

OK, I’ll bite. Post your system under the Audiogon Systems section. With pictures and descriptions. I am very eager to learn from you 😘
So you are Tommy O’Brien!! Right on!

Oh.. always willing to learn. But I cannot possibly learn from people who have nothing to teach, but useless “everything sounds the same” bs
That is what I mostly use.

As for owning things, I have more.

Sorry, I don’t understand. I thought we were talking about our audio systems. Is that not what you asked me for?

I have some Alexa speakers too. And clock radios, iPhone iPad , headphones, computers too.
Since you are being serious... I no longer use headphones at home. Just speakers. I was big into headphones until a couple of years Ago, and when my kids were little. Now they grew up, so no issue with cranking up speakers.

My last headphones pair I sold less than a year ago. Focal Utopia. You can see my transactions history here on Audiogon, Head-Fi, and US Audiomart (same user name). I had owned other headphones too, about a dozen, my second favorite was Senn HD800. Headphones amps too. Several. My favorite was Headamp GSX MKII.
Hey @glupson... check under Systems. Do you know how to do so? Click on my user name, then details, then System. I have described it all there. And a couple of pictures too

Now, I showed you mine, show me yours 😉
Yes @asvjerry  headphones can be really good. But I found myself listening more and more to my speakers, so I pulled the plug. Helped raising money for other purchases too. Having said this, I may be back to the headphones in the future. I am not that old
OK glubson, I thought you were being serious for a moment. You are just monkeying around and snarky. Have a nice weekend. Enjoy your Walkman (and I am NOT being snarky here)
I see the usual suspects are overly triggered this morning. I had some fun, got a run, in, had a wonderful breakfast with my wife, and all the while you guys were being keyboard warriors.

Look who’s talking about keyboard warriors! You just wrote a thesis, right now. And you just joined Audiogon (under this handle at least), and have already written over 200 posts. In a few days, you will have more posts than me, and I joined in 2005.

I don’t go on forums to convert ostriches. They are a lost cause. I come to forums to help, even discuss with the vast majority that are truly interested in the best sound they can achieve for a given dollar, most of who just read but never post

And who the f**k are you? Who gave you the authority?
Obviously. But which one is the question. The main honcho, or someone who just copy/ paste them?

I am pretty sure if I spent a day or two on those forums, I would have enough material to copy / paste their shit (likely also copy / paste from someone else), and spread it around all Internet audio groups. That’s what these guys do. Meet one of them in person, and you will see. I have. And they can barely put a few words together.
