The last two posts are sad, but I know what they are talking about, I've been there. It can be an art in putting together a system that sounds good and it can be down right depressing to have that kind of money wrapped up in it and not be pleased. Hang in there guys and don't get caught up in things like "bigger is better". |

It need to be relative to your home or car. For Mr. Microsoft, million dollar system is nothing, but for a sub-average Joe like me, a $5K system is a big deal. I have to continue to drive my old 1990 Mazda ($1K? No, nobody want to buy a 192K miles 1990 Mazda for $1K) to maintain my addiction. |

$44k if bought new. Much less here on the Audiogon. About the same as 10 seasons of football tickets, which puts it in perspective. About what it costed us to run a 1973 beechcraft bonanza for about 300 hrs/ year; think Audio is expensive, try aviation! |

Right around $10,100 retail, give or take. Actual out of pocket is more like $7,000 thanks to a couple deals and some dumb luck. This in an interesting topic, while adding it up I acutally thought it would be more! Still not too shabby for a guy in his early 20's!
Figure on this number doubling once I get the speakers I *really* want and upgrade my very mediocre CDP. Figure on half again in tweaks and mods I'd like to do... to be honest, more of my money goes to my home recording studio...probably about double what my hi-fi is worth, and it's nowhere near done, either.

Damn Guys, I spent less than $2,000. Now I feel unworthy..... Do they have an audioloser website? I must admit in my defense for being so cheap and poor, that I do have some other hobbies. I love wine, modern art and furniture, and my Porsche.

Wow. I am in awe of some of these set ups. Some of these systems reflect higher dollar figures than what my wife and I make in a year! And we're doin' pretty darn well, we're in the top 5% in average salaries. Congrats to all of you who have the time and the means to be extravagant. Why not! This is a great hobby. If I hit it big in the lottery, I'll do it too! Listen well. |

Well Brian, I'm back and there's been more damage done. With a new amp and 9 meter Venustus interconnect I am up around $63,000. Where does the money go? Oh yeah, that's right!

As my records and CD's cost well over $80,000 (MSRP) - I just didn't have any money left over for audio stuff, so I bought me some Bose and an old Sansui receiver - I'm in hog heaven! :-) |
I have to say that I've kept it a bare minumum and it would still retail for over 6K for system #1, System number 2 is SS and with the exception of a Music Hall CDMMF-25 and a rarely used MF 308 integrated is all vintage so its price is even less. I'm going to sell the MF one of these days because I don't use it very much. In any event I've given up on making significant upgrades to the Tube system because I refuse to spend that kind of money. I live vicariuosly through others whose money mangers have gone their seperate ways. |

Doug, No offense intended! :-) I started with Sansui seperates when Sansui was on its way out (not the good earlier stuff), a Phillips 212 TT, and some white van (so to speak) speakers. Small wonder I got the upgrade bug. |

I've always sought out giant killers in their price range. The sound I have now is IMHO worth every penny of its cost. I'm also quite proud of the fact that the resale value of my current setup is not much less than what I paid for it. Thanks to the people at Audiogon and eBay. OTOH, I have not factored in a few thousand in losses on gear I bought and sold on the way.
If I thought I had spent something close to new retail on my system I would consider I had a problem addiction.
Up to a few years ago, I used to get very excited just over the thought that I might be able to buy a piece of equipment. The drool factor was very high. Now I know I am not in the big leagues at all. I still enjoy looking at and getting to know new equipment. I have more awareness of and respect for the very top end, and a better notion of what makes a bargain. Also, I now have a much better idea of what I like. |

Since just because they don't have a lot of money to allocate towards their systems it is not fair that they should have to have less than stellar equipment.

THen the 2ch. already got random parts for both, just need to replace speakers and stuff, get a multich amp, probably some electrostats for the 2ch as well. but at least i have a clear plan for a good affordably ht rig, the 2ch wil be one of those "Ever evolving" rigs. |

well its hard to tell because i change components weekly
i do nieghborhood cleanup and get the most wonderful stereos free. i just got rid of the adcom a1a amp and carver pre i was using last week and am playing with a pioneer with rogers studio 7 speakers it sounds so good and it makes my chest feel like its caving in,.
ears ringing ect.
best of all its in the cab of my truck as im looking for more. ran off a 750 watt inverter and the cleanest sound ive ever heard in a vehicle.
anyway my system never costs more than gasoline to go find it. |

About 25k retail, and that's without the stuff I can't remember the cost of. It also doesn't include all the "small stuff" like brushes, fluids, sleeves, and all of the assorted crap that comes with analog. Now if you add all of the tubes (I have about 200), God only knows.
Jesus, I thought I had a low dollar system! My wife would file today if she had any clue.
Of course, buying off the 'gon has saved me shitloads over retail.
Now, if you add the HT setup, that brings in another 20k or so.
