DAC Suggestions

I’m in the market for a new stand alone DAC upgrade from my current Border Patrol which is fed by my Innuos Zenith Mark III server.. My budget is $3K - $6K new  only & like the natural, minimally “ digital” sound of my existing one but would like some more detail, a bit tighter bass & better imaging while not sounding fatiguing like many high end systems I’ve heard. Some reviewers suggest that a non over sampling DAC is usually the best way to achieve this, what do you folks think?

Does such a unit in this price range exist in anyone’s experience?

Thanks for your help.

I recently received a May KTE and it is one of the finest dac Ive had in my  system. I have had for many years, the schitt Yggy, Pontus 2, Terminator plus 12th. All the dacs mentioned are good, just what your ear like and how it works with your equipment.

Holo Audio May. The KTE edition is just under $6k. The other levels are less.

I also own a Chord TT2 not to mention a Mojo 2.

The Holo Audio May is by far the best DAC I've heard at this price point.

Merason DACS look great. I will definitely be checking them & the Bricasti’s at Axpona. Thanks everyone!

Merason Reuss DAC just came in. Its awesome - great soundstage and very musical. It is close to the DAC1

Take a look at the Weiss 204. I have not upgraded the PS yet, but I plan to, and even now, the tonality and dynamics are wonderful. I think with an LPS upgrade it will only get another level.

@jonwolfpell - Based on your criteria, the Merason Dac1 would be a great fit. Read the reviews. I own it and can attest to what the reviewers say - “relaxed but detailed,” “musical vs analytical.” One review compares it favorably to your current Dac.

BTW - It is a non-oversampling Dac.

Thanks very much for all the recommendations- the hunt begins. I’ll be in the Chicago area to visit a relative the weekend of Axpona so I’ll go at least one day & hope to check some of them out there..

Audio Note 2.1X Signature if you’re ok with tubes and an upper limit of 24 bits/96k.

try the Wyred4sound 10th anniversary DAC It's $4,500 US and one of the reviewers put it up against his VPI turntable with a $5,000 Japanese cartridge and he said the 10th anniversary DAC was every bit as analog sounding I bought it on that review and I totally agree and they also give you a 30-day trial. if you don't like it you send it back you get your money back can't beat that.

I bought a Canor, DAC 2.10 strictly from a review I read on Positive Feedback & those guys loved it, now, so do I. Purchased from Holt Hill in Boston & it was about the best money I've spent on my digital end yet. I moved up from a Synthasis Roma DAC69 which is also a very nice machine but the amount of inner detail and soundstage depth  the Canor presents is otherworldly.

Just my experience

The Musetec DAC-005 has garnered many positive reviews by Audiogon users. It utilizes two ES9038 Pro x2 chips, and has a large power transformer. It meets your requirements WRT music presentation and sounds phenomenal.

Bryston BDA-3 (made in Canada)

Wyred4Sound DAC-2v2SE

Mcintosh MDA200 ( has replacable dac module)

I have only had experience with Byrston streamers but the support is good.

Wyred4sound support good as well. I have one of their moded Sonos ZP 90 and its  been in service for many moons.  Their products are also built in USA.

Chord TT2 would be a highly recommended option for you to consider. Chord DACs have great synergy with Innuos streamers. I used the Chord TT2 with my Innuos Zenith Mk.3. Really enjoyed enjoyed this combination.

Also might want to consider Audio Note DAC1.1x/II Signature and DAC2.1x Signature for a tubed non over sampling options.

Take a look at Denafrips, or if you’re open to tubes look at Lampizator or Audio Mirror.  Best of luck.

I have 2 systems and 2 great DACS, I have an Aqua La Voce , and the Saturn Audio Dac. they are both around $4K and sound equal, both great Dacs.
