With only $1,000, save it. Analog isn’t worth it until you put $10,000-20,000 into it (as compared to digital). (Others may have lower thresholds.)
Best way to spend my money
A digital guy asking the analog group basically so bare with me please...right now i have a VPI scout 2 with a high output Benz mc cartridge....going into a Gold note ph10...a 15 foot run of rca cable into a Pass labs int60...my table is set along a sidewall be cause of no room for the table around the rack.....So my questions is this...I have a grand to spend..should I buy a power supply for my phono amp...should I get a better low output mc cartridge.. or should I buy xlr cables to run from phono to the integrated...I hear a promise of better things to come and I have no expectations to better my digital setup...thanks
Some turntables are very sensitive to the platform they sit on. I would experiment with that before doing anything else. You probably have some different footers sitting around. Try them and see if the sound is more to your liking. When I had my Linn, the sound was very tunable, depending on the platform. Certainly worth a try. While I don’t agree with the above assessment of how much you need to spend, I don’t see $1000 going that far, considering you are starting with reasonably high quality analog gear. |
@missioncoonery stated " my table is set along a sidewall because of no room for the table around the rack " What does this statement reveal, A 18Kg Mechanical Tool has a placement selected for it in a Room, selected because the Audio Equipment Rack positioning or available Space on the Rack is not seen as best suited for the TT Setting Up. My experiences has led me to the place not man off the shelf equipment rack shelves will be useful if solely used to support 18Kg, an 18Kg TT is another thing all together. This TT needs a fair bit off thought put into the Structure that supports it and not only for the quality of fastenings if a Wall Shelf is to be selected. Making more known about how the TT is being supported will help with making suggestion for mounting the TT, that can return substantial benefits. Of the HO Benz is not overly used and is believed to be able to offer quite a few extra hours of usage, the Benz might just show another side of itself when the Styli requirements, when in contact with the Groove Wall are being given a improved environment to function in. Would a CD Player be advised to be mounted on a Washing Machine, especially one being used as a Spin Dry. A Wild Suggestion is, a TT would not be advised to be mounted on a Washing Machine that is never Powered On and seated on Anti Vibration Footers, the washing machine in this state has the potential to effect a TT's produced signal, more than a Power On Washing Machine will effect a CDP's produced signal. The basic goal, being to send a signal that is as unadulterated as possible to achieve, to undergo various stages of Amplification and then be transferred to becoming the End Sound. The End Sound for the Typical Audio Equipment user, is all that is available to assess how the Signal is being Produced, Sent, Amplified and Divided at the XOver to become the Sound the Speaker is capable of achieving. |
Shame the reply is dismissive, the Digital Guy maybe has quite strong ideas for analogue and is quite sure of where they expect better things to come from. The only request for info in the Post was the following, " Making more known about how the TT is being supported will help with making suggestion for mounting the TT, that can return substantial benefits. " Is not 'can return substantial benefits' very similar to "expect better things to come". I'm not sure where benefits or better is on the table without considering the best possible mounting for the TT. Good Luck from here on, it will be very very easy getting what other suggestions to be offered are talking about. Take the usual advice to be put out there and see how a Bank Account will be encouraged to drain very very fast. Usually where required funding is ascending fast to 10 x $1K, this is not unusual on the Gon. Some members won't even try and help with only $1K to consider, that is how much the connectors on their to be suggested Cable are intended to cost. |
You have a pretty good set up already. For my money I’d invest in a decent set of balanced cables. That long of a run in RCA cables is asking for trouble with noise. Especially coming out of a phono preamp. All my source equipment is 20 feet away from my tube power amps. I use XLR for the long run from my preamp. I have zero noise using those cables. |
+1 @winoguy17 |
I have had the high output Benz cartridges (there are a few, so I don’t know if you mean something humble like the Gold, or a little more fancy, like the Wood H. If it is more like the former, I found getting a low output MC like the Hana S was an enjoyable difference for me. Of course, a thousand dollars would buy a lot of records, so there’s that. You have a good system - buy a whole bunch of great records you can love for decades. Best bang for the buck... |

I believe IF his detractors took a step back from English as your perhaps first and last language, Pindac adds a lot of introspective value. He is asking about isolation foremost. To the OP what does the VPI live on ? I have a 2nd table 5M away from my linestage and until recently into same Goldnote you have except with the remote supply Cable is XLR made w Neutrik and AQ Coral cable. Some DIT…but under $500… My 40# Denon floats on mag lev footers and sits on a several hundred # cabinet. So in summary Sort isolation, then XLR…. Enjoy the music Jim |
My VPI table has under it an oak table as the base. Stands about 3 feet off the floor..on top of it a 4 inch butherblock that has footers under it...on top of it is 2 inch piece of plexiglass again with footers. The table sits on this ...the gold note has its own stand similar sitting to the left side of the table...I don't expect this to sound as good as my digital but if I can improve things the better.. |
+1 @gano - maybe a hummingbird ultrasonic record cleaning machine |
Many responders do not seem to realize that the OP is running 15 foot cables NOT between his TT and his phono stage (bad idea) but between his phono stage and linestage. That is perfectly OK, but since they are both balanced devices, it seems remiss not to be connecting them with a 15 foot pair of balanced, XLR terminated cables, as I mentioned before and as others have mentioned since. But spending a kilobuck on either the outboard Goldnote PS or a better cartridge are both also good ways to spend. I would not buy an LOMC cartridge, if $1000 was my spending limit. I'd go MI or MM but definitely not HOMC. |
@lewm is correct- unbalanced long runs picks up more noise, so it’s best to run balanced which greatly helps reduce/cancel such noise. |

I am now able to visualise a Oak Table with a Table Top and possibly a H Frame design for the elevating of the Sub Supports and Sub Plinths. The H Frame is put together possibly as a Dowel Jointed Frame if a Modern Design or a more complex Joint if produced with an Historical Design. An unknown footer type is in use sat upon the Table Top to support/separate a 4" Butchers Block, which also has an unknown Footer type in use that is sat upon it to support/separate a 50mm Plexiglass . It is also assumed the TT’s Supplied Feet at sat upon the P’glass, to create a Space between the P'glass and Plinth, as well as assist with Levelling the TT.. I am now able to visualise a combined Weight of approx’ 8 Stone (50Kg) sat on top of a Oak Table Top in conjunction with the Support Frame used to function as the Sub Support for the TT’s 4 Tier Sub Plinth Assembly. Removing the Focus on What is in use by the OP and commenting about all designs of this nature the following info will show not typically discussed info: 1, The Sub Support in use has to be very very rigid when substantial weight is to be mounted on it. 2, Weight when sat upon a Structure that is not rigid will be a cause for increased movement being created within the structure, resulting in a change / unpredictable changes Structures management of the local ambient energies present within the listening space. 3, All materials in use as a support are generally poor materials when it comes to Damping and Dissipation, even though the purpose for them to be a Structural Material is fine as a choice if strength is all that is being considered. 4, Intrinsic Properties belonging to materials can be Objectively Assessed using methodologies for measuring materials. Commonly Selected Woods are showing very similar data, - Oak @ 0.102 - Butchers Block @ 0.1 - MDF - 0.017 - Metals also are similar - Steel @ 0.008 - Chemical Based Substances share similar as well - Plexiglass @ 0.07 5, In the Sub Support and Sub Plinths, energies will travel through to the Plinth of the TT. 6, The Stylus is in contact with the Groove with the design for it to extract a facsimile of the Data embedded within the Modulation in the Groove and send this on for conversion to become a Electrical Signal to be Amplified. 7,The Signal will become and End Sound at the time it has exited the Xover as a divided Signal to create different frequencies within the End Sound Produced. With the above in mind and rigidity being of the utmost importance to give certain material types their most effective environment to function efficiently in. Taming the environment the Analogue Source is set up in, to create an Interface where the Stylus is protected from receiving unwanted energies, is a life long interest and not able to be addressed with immediacy. much learning is to be had, if this is an area of an audio interest that has appeal. I have stated in the past, " On the Gon, there are Analogue Source Users who have kept an Open Mind about such a subject of Isolation/Separation, but were at a place where thought was suggesting little else was achievable. My basic Take as a result of experiences had, is Analogue Source / CD Source are able to be very very impressive and wanted to be used regularly. |
Any suggestions for a good/inexpensive 15' XLR cable for the OP to try? I've only used XLR for microphones ages ago, though I do recall them being used in recording studios. The big name in the late 70's/early 80's was Mogami (sp?) for cable, but I don't recall what connectors were used as a friend made mine up. DeKay |
+1 on Mogami XLRs. My suggestion would be to find a used (or new) SoundSmith MIMC Star cartridge. This cart should work with your phono pre and once they have 100 or so hours playing time on them, they really get holographic and sound amazing. That cartridge, like the Lyra Delos, made me want to explore the more expensive models in the respective lines. The process taught me about the law of diminishing returns. Both the Delos and the MIMC Star are super solid. The MIMC Star is a little closer in sound to the Benz. The Delos has that amazing Lyra openness on the top end. Anyway. Have fun you cant loose. |
Dr bond if you think you need a system that cost 10,000 to 20,000 at least for analog...Your right this isn't for you or the thousands of others who do....come on,learn that dollars or the more you spend the better it sounds...buy smart, buy what fits your needs....it doesn't have to be 20,000 dollars .Mine is great and it cost less that 5,000 and that's list prices. Not what ivspent. |
