Meguiars Scratch-X or Meguiars Paint Cleaner with great success on piano-finish speakers. They are not abrasive as such, but contain fine fillers which help to minimize the appearance of scratches and scuffs.
Best products and process to polish piano black KEF speakers
Hello,
seeking advice on best products and process to restore light scratches on my R3 speakers after being repaired for corner damage.
While the company did a decent job a repairing damage to the speaker, they somehow managed to create another problem by scratching to top and sides of the speaker.
when I compare it to the good speaker it is a night and day difference. Are there good products to bring back the luster and correct the scratches?
I would appreciate any help with this issue.

@rayray57 Please let us know how it all works. It rubs me when people work on your stuff and are oblivious to how much details matter. |
@rayray57 In a previous life, I owned a motorcycle dealership. We were constantly needing to remove scratches from tanks and fenders. This is the only system we used, and it works. I could buff out a deep scratch on a black tank, and you could not find it when I was finished. Left no swirls in the clear coat. Pricey, but if you want something that works, sometimes you need to pay for it. Cheers. |
ZYMOL makes a product specially formulated for dark colors its called CARBON. $65 for a 8oz size! this is real wax, not like the crap they sell at Auto Zone.

Hey @rayray57 are you able to post pictures to see how much "repair" is needed? If they are super fine like wash mark scratches on a car, then a good paste wax could be fine to fill. IF they are pretty good scratches, you may be in for some polishing. If you have a good 3" drill with slower rpm option, you should be able to handle the task. For products, I do sell some 3M product, but really 3D compounds are far superior and also available in 8oz size. Look on their site for their 510 compound and 520 polish. Pair that with a foam cutting pad and foam polishing pad, and use some detail spray and a nice microfiber rag for cleanup. I run autobody supply stores and can certainly help walk you through the full process to get it done correctly. Just send me a message. -Lloyd |
You are going to want to create a virtual system. Click on you user name a couple times Dashboard and Virtual Systems. I can never find it directly... I always have to fool around with my user name and Dashboard before you get a long list including virtual system. When you get there it is easy. Maybe someone actually knows the direct route. |
Without pics it's impossible to make recommendations that are not guesses...but assuming you have swirl marks and minor scratches in the clear coat only, so far only the suggestion by @bigtwin is on the right track (other than contact KEF). Waxes and polishes wont help, even though products like Zymol genuine carnuba waxes are very good at protecting surfaces once corrected. Menzerna also makes very good paint correction / polishing products. But true paint correction cannot be done by hand. You need a professional grade machine, not a cheap rotary polisher you might find at Walmart. A proper auto detailer might be a cheaper alternative to buying the materials and gear, and acquiring the skills to do this, unless you already have them. |

For all the suggestions. I appreciate it and for those out there, I am very good at detailing cars and very picky when doing so. So I am very familiar with paint correction and detailing. I have 4 different buffers from Rupes to Griots etc. of different size throw but wonder if the paint on these speakers is too soft to use a buffer on even at low speed and softest pads. I think I will start by hand. Once I can get the pics loaded you can see the difference from the good speaker to the one that was fixed but not polished correctly.
Thank you, Rob |
