I doubt the site WANTS to ban people. It’s bad for business to lock out potential customers. But any business has to maintain a certain degree of decorum to avoid turning customers off and them leaving of their own accord. We need to be glad there is a forum at all. Moderating it has to be considered an expense. More automation would help. So I think I get it. I would not hold out hope though that there would ever be any constraints in place that censure people just because somebody does not like what they say about this or that hifi topic. Other things may be more important or sensitive. Censoring is bad for business and people have a right to say what they want but not to expect no consequences either good or bad. It is what is it. Gotta just make the best of it. Nobody is required to take anything from a "bully". In some cases, like with certain personality disorders, resistance may be futile and best thing is to just ignore. Or flag posts or threads if one must. That is the mechanism provided. Just use discretion. Not liking someone or what they say alone is not a good reason to censor. Is the post even potentially harmful, threatening, ominous or just outright dishonest in some way? Different story. If one cares then it is their job to help mind the shop when needed. It’s an imperfect world, what can you say? Be tolerant but stand up for what is "right". Off soapbox.....cheers!
About users with hidden agendas
If you know that a user is a dealer and they fail to disclose and attacks other users because they make a point against their interest, do you expose the user?
I know of a gentleman here that continuously posts and goes after people and does not disclose who he is.
What are the ethics of this forum?
Tammy and Audiogon have an opportunity to reclaim the high ground…or not. If they do so, at least initially, the forums will be slower. They should stay the course though. Pick the weeds, things look sparse until the desired growth has time to fill in. Listen, I love oldhvymec 60-70 % of the time and the other times he needs the penalty box. In my experience, formerly tough guys have to find their new identity when life evolves and they can no longer clear out the bar for the hell of it. Some hard standards of decorum will help. Or not. |
well said @ghasley on the active mcintosh post i called out an argumentative user with 65 posts in 60 days since joining... zero marketplace feedback, zero sales or purchases, country of origin listed as 'n/a'... 5-6-7 posts in a row, piss piss piss on mcintosh, picking fights with longstanding users here ... so tired of this... dunno if tammy is away... |
The real problem with aggressive and insulting posters, with trolls and “experts” issuing absolute pronouncements when they have a total of 20 posts and joined last month is that good folks who have posted and contributed kind and valuable advice and input just go elsewhere. Casually useful threads never get started. The last thing I need is to post an observation only to be attacked by some dude with his Humperdink integrated and he just discovered Harbeths and proclaims them the final word. Agressively.
Ive discovered the sooner you take a bully to the woodshed the better. The community benefits rather than the community being abandoned. Im sure aim not the only one who has seen the sparsity of interesting threads being started because of the same two or three people crashing every party. Ask a question about which tube someone prefers in their preamp and you get the usual “tubes suck”, “buy Tektons”, “you are an idiot if you arent using a magenta fuse”, “try chucks contact enhancer on the pins” and my favorite….”you wont hear any difference because they measure the same according to Amir”. Not to mention the amateur scientists and conspiracy nuts.
And no, it isnt censorship…its a standard of behavior to honor or simply move on….good people move on first, bad people move on later once theyve sucked the life out. |
My observation is that when someone gets banned here they probably did something to clearly deserve it. I have seen that the Gon prefers to not ban people if at all possible. I believe they issue warnings first. When it happens it’s probably because warnings were ignored and something was deemed bad for business. Gotta take off the blinders! I doubt anyone gets banned or restored based solely on whether someone else likes them or not. |
So the mods still won’t do anything about the guy and continue to let him harass others. Sounds like it needs to go up a couple more notches. Bring back MC and loose the person the mods REFUSE to dress down. Simple! As an old shop steward admin needs to know when to step in. I once again see ZERO in the way of intervention only deletion. Is ADMIN asleep, the mods ASLEEP. What is WRONG with the AG staff they can’t manage to give ME A TALKIN’ TO. I’ll take a dressing down and expect it, I also expect the other clown to be also. Do your job MODS. No, your not getting a raise.

Quite @astolfor … +1 |
I believe that narcissists can behave that way? The other track people can go is to depression. Those people usually are more important than they feel, and not as inferior as they believe that they are. It is not an entirely different coin. |
@lemonhaze he will not. He will continue to go through life making fun of people, because since he can’t argue with facts, his only way to feel important and superior is degrading people, calling autistic people ass burgers, and making fun of anyone that does not agree with him. |
@o_holter - "will be polarized"? That horse got out of the barn a long time ago.... As for 'talk of the people', looks like the people are talking; they're talking about what they disagree about! 😁 |
Cool down folks. Even if Agon isn’t "political", everything is. Some are out to grab more cake. Some are accused if they dont have golden ears - or, some condition. Take it as it comes. Over here in Europe, many are concerned that the US will be polarized, paving the way to authoritarian rule. Support Agon as a democratic, decent, "talk of the people" kind of forum. |
Well thanks to whichever child on this thread had my post deleted regarding autism. I actually live with high functioning autism and was simply making a reference that there are a lot on this site that have the same condition. At least I can add more people to the list that I can ignore. The whole lot of you need to toughen up. |

You TWO clowns really need to put a cork in it. I've seen enough and read enough to know neither of you are here for the benefit of anyone other than to speak badly of certain people. I'm going to actively and openly participate in teaching you both some manners. I personally think you are BOTH cowards. I don't like what you do or say. You SAY God bless at the end of your post jerry and say FU through the post. That my friend is the worst of the worst. You both need a LONG time out on your active campaign to derail threads and flame merchants who sell here on a regular basis. You BOTH are full blow anarchist. You have no purpose other than to create a semblance of "God Bless" when in reality it is just the opposite. Unless I missed something, several time tsushima1 has been confronted because of IT'S foul nature in responding to anyone. STOP and speak with respect or leave. If your going to speak about anyone on AG do so with respect in private and praise in public. BOTH of you have been trying to push your ugliness, one rather openly, one underhandedly as a team effort. Even the locals weren't as brazen as you two. It's almost like you two bad brothers, both with different personalities but both with the same agenda. CAUSE discourse and mess with AG. Admin would you do something about these two, or give me my walkin' papers. I've heard and read enough. There is NO reasoning with either. It's easy to see the "TEAM" from AH has invaded like a Covid variant on AG. I need a 4th shoot. Please add them to the George list. I'll speak with my wallet. I don't need to BEG for donations to keep my affairs in order. I've always funded myself.. I can always take my wares and business elsewhere. Thank you ALL for reading and admin I bid you adieu!

@holmz Two politicians walk into a bar. Cringe. |
Having being thoroughly entertained by this whole thread, I thought at times, Where is Judge Judy? or at other times the hilarious lines from Abbot and Costello,Who’s on first base…… etc. The other peculiarity is (and don’t take this personally Ted), the photo of Ted standing in front of the drinks counter, daylight shining through the large windows in the background, the time is 2:23 am! I honestly do not know how a thread could deteriorate to a libellous push and shove. This is why I no longer participate very much. Oh, I read most of the postings to see if there is anything new I can learn. Please keep it civil and in the spirit of AGON. Adrian 🇦🇺 |

@jerryg123 we are in very good company. Once a doctor of mine who had one PhD in history and another in Autism, told me never in the history of humanity there has been an autistic person leading the world to war or genocide; and that the vast majority of transcendental scientific achievements that have made this world a better place to live, have been the product of people in the spectrum. I can live with this :) |
Acoustics play a big part on sound reproduction, and it is a science too. Just like with painting, music, photography, glass blowing and cooking, you need to understand and have a relationship with the basic principles that govern your art. Knowing about harmonics does not mean you can make music and the opposite is true. If you don't know harmonics and rhythm it is extremely likely your music will not stand the test of time. |

Audio is mainly acoustic not the gear... Basically good gear will do... ( aiming at the best design there is in the world make no sense for most people anyway ) But nothing will replace acoustic...
i say the same thing than you but less economically: things begin to be interesting at this intersection between subjective and objective... Why ?
Because save for some people, learning is a PROCESS in time AROUND this intersection... My subjective ecaluation has changed each week for almost the last 2 years... I was learning how to put in place the conditions to increase the value of my subjective evaluation... Buying something and writing that this is good and this is my subjective ruling evaluation means not a lot... Only the objective process guiding us to our subjective evaluation means something FOR ALL... Selling a piece of gear, even a good one and saying thaty only subjective appreciation means something is preposterous...Audio reviews are indicative of a trend in bulk numbers but thats all.. Each separate subjective evaluation means almost nothing save if the reviewer guide us through an objective learning path to increase our own subjective perception...But most revewers sell gear... very few educate... It is acoustic 101 who was my guiding rule ... I bought nothing else than basic gear and my ratio S.Q. price is over the roof... Thanks to acoustic treatment and mechanical acoustic control and tuning of the Speakers/ room... And vibrations control could cost very low... And cleaning the electrical noise floor too... i dont understand that most people cannot figure this .... And go on buying costly upgrade or partial costly "tweak" solution...

@jerryg123 as you know being autistic is not easy. It is so shameful that this guy is so unkind, ignorant and callus that goes on attacking people in such pathetic way. For myself, being highly functioning autistic has proven, despite all the challenges, to be a gift. By learning how to manage my triggers, I learned how to navigate through difficult times, help others to understand that with compassion and kindness we can get through things that one would have never been possible. Sound is subjective until it intersects with science, and science is not subjective. It is at this intersection where some, like Ted, can’t discuss things without becoming offensive and degrading; maybe because their lack scientific understanding, manners, class or arrogance; or a combination of all of them. Very few showcased this so elegantly, specially in English, as Floyd Toole; with whom I had the opportunity to have a few deep technical discussions about sound reproduction when he was doing a research study in signal integrity about 18-20 years ago. |

@jjss49 :
Spot on, you nailed it! It’s those 3-4 names wrecking havoc in all threads. Not just this one. As for @ted_denney , and the hidden agendas, every post of him I have seen in Audiogon has the signature will full name (real persona) and the title / company. Show me one that doesn’t. So what’s the deal and bi***ing with the “hidden agenda “? And by the way Ted, thanks for keeping politics out of your Audiogon posts. You have not even once gone that route
|
Thank you @jjss49. I do love this hobby, and I don’t like not being able talk about it, or exchange ideas with my fellow audiophiles. It’s fine if some do not agree with us but the way a few choose to express themselves leaves much to be desired. Yours in music, Ted Denney III Lead Designer/CEO Synergistic Research Inc. |

None of my responses have been rude or without warrant. I am not however someone who will be nice to anyone pinching one off on me simply because I’m a manufacturer. The bottom line, my audio viewpoints are aligned with the vast majority of people on this forum. Audio is largely subjective, if people don’t like this fact it’s on them. And if they continue to abuse the majority of participants here on this forum, because we like sharing our experiences which are overwhelmingly subjective, many will push back. Yours in music, Ted Denney III Lead Designer/CEO Synergistic Research Inc. |
It bring big tear of joy to my eye that this matter being resolve. The Ted guy maybe stop be rude to audiophile and call stuff junk and maybe start lift weight a little be help. Other guy realize guy businessman and work real hard to get good product and not keep nagging him like old lady over hair color. You make good point that Ted guy not identify self and maybe he be more care in do that. Me thought steel cage match in order but I bet oldhemmy come in smash everyone real good. It make my heart warm we no have to do that. |
@jtcf - thanks for that. Bill |
..well I ashamedly admit to having waded thru the muck of comments re Ted’s original post and fear my IQ has dropped a few points. Ted’s company SR makes all sorts of interesting products that will either improve sonics or not…but one thing is certain. The only way to make that determination about anything is to listen to said product in your system. May I remind that he offers a 30 day money back guarantee? Hello? For the record I’m a retired EE and as such, a skeptic when it comes to a lot of the tweaking wares out there. I won’t get into the beaten to death cable brouhaha but I can say with first hand knowledge that his purple fuses do exactly what they are purported to do. Don’t ask me why because even with my RLC credentials I have no explanation. You can piss and moan about the SR “snake oil” all you want but don’t dismiss everything out of hand. I didn’t and I’m enjoying a higher level of sonics in my McIntosh/VSA system. Ok guys flame way, I can take it..LOL.. |
@whart the forum rules do prohibit political discussions. The volunteer mods would have to babysit this place day and night to make sure that the policies are followed. That's not going to happen. So they skim quickly and delete here and there, sometimes entire threads. A lot of times a polite and sensible post gets wiped out because it's sandwiched in between some of the obnoxious posts. I'm a mod on another type of forum which isn't as busy as this one.Over there we have the luxury of time to ask nicely to cease and desist,several times if necessary. The incorrigible are banned.This is a private company with the right to make and enforce their own rules. But with only a couple of mods here it's pretty much impossible to do much enforcement.

I believe everything matters. It often comes to what you have the time, interest, inclination and money to do. Though I always consider resale value an important part of the decision. many cables and isolation devises lose almost no value over a few years.. I have experienced significant improvements from cords, cables, isolation...have never tried fuses, they would probably help, and I’m tired of trying different cables, just can’t get on floor anymore...and it was the Synergistic Master Coupler that got me started on power cords, sold it for no loss 10 years later... |
