...I can change the 'o' to a 'u'.....*entreative, Mona Lisa glance* I think we've all engaged in enough 'encounter group' breast-beating on the OP's question/statement.... glupson, there's always room for improvement, which personally I leave room for. *S* Spouse is off on a 'plant hunt', which is her hobby; I'm doing some 'low-impact' defered maintainence this 'n that. glupson geoffkait,
Looks like a bagel to me. >>>OMG Have I created a Frankenstein monster? Have I been cloned? It’s like looking in the mirror. 👀 |
I've tried that, only to have my post dissected line by line and word by word to prove how wrong I was. Childish and ridiculous, and every time it's happened, the "debate" had nothing to do with audio, or the OP question. How does that contribute value to anything? |
I mostly skip the "debate" after I have made my point. You can never win a pissing contest like that. But I don't like reporting and censoring, and I believe in freedom of speech. But it can be difficult sometimes in an online world to filter out all the junk. “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” Mark Twain |
Depending on the country, you might be disappointed to find that if he is in public space, that you cannot do that! Just because you don't like an opinion does not legally mean that it cannot be spoken. This is not a public forum, so free speech does not exist here. I'm all for free speech too, but on an internet forum trolls jump in a mess things up, so free speech on an internet forum is really rare. So I don't mind giving up some of my free speech so I can participate here. IOW moderation exists to keep the discussion relatively polite and on-topic, without trolling. Trolling BTW is any kind of post that induces anger, anxiety or the like simply for the sake of messing with people. When everyone here signed off (clicked the 'Terms and Conditions' box) they did so with the full understanding that they gave up their free speech rights so they could participate on this privately-owned forum. So this thread at least is helpful in that this is made clear; that there is good reason to report trolling (and since the moderators rarely participate in threads, the only way trolling will be stopped), name-calling, spam and the like. Just get used to the 'Report' button, and use it. |
Given that we all have biases, how does one reliably differentiate between "trolling" and "posting controversial content"? - I would say if you are creating a thread attacking or promoting a controversial position (no matter what side of the fence you are on) without bringing anything new to the discussion. Then you are trolling. - If you create a thread whose underlying premise is to insult a portion of the community, no matter their beliefs, then that is trolling - If you respond to a post and the basis of your response is a personal attack without adding anything new to the discussion, then you are trolling. - If the basis of your argument is someone else has inferior listening skills, then you are trolling. - If you bring up a persons (or your) political beliefs to either justify your or negate someone else's position, then you are trolling - If you respond to a post, even "aggressively", but address what was in the post, clearly why you agree or disagree, provide some logic for your position, and don't insult the other person and make it personal, then you are not a troll, you are someone passionate about the topic. - If you respond to someone's reply to your post, even if aggressive, but "reasoned", and don't take it personally (assuming they didn't), and you do the same, then you are passionate about the topic and a mature adult. Unfortunately, in a short period of time I have felt the need to report a few posts to moderators. It is not that I can't take care of myself or I don't have thick enough skin, but because to respond to those people "appropriately" would not be appropriate on a public forum and would be a detriment to other people here and the topic being discussed. Their posts were not adding to the topic, were personal attacks, and in some cases were targeted trolling. My personal experience (here and elsewhere), is that those first to resort to personal attacks, are also the first to behave like they are the victim in the interchange. When faced with an inability to logically and maturely defend their position, their reaction is to lash out and absolve themselves of responsibility. The reality is that not all "conflict" is bad. Both exposing yourself to ideas that conflict with your own and being forced to defend your position are learning experiences if you allow them to be. It's okay to aggressively defend your position if you do it maturely, just prepared to be wrong. |
@atmasphere good to know that trolling is not allowed here. The person that I am complaining about, and the reason I started this thread, is because of a blatant troll. There is no question about it, he is trolling us and many have fell into his trap. I’m glad I started this thread now. @heaufio123 Thank you for that well thought out and well laid out post! It was very informative 👍 |

What's more disturbing is that it seems like a lot of people share the sentiment, yet all the mods have done is first say the thread is unnecessary, and then just ignore it. So, even though we all agree, nothing is going to be done about it. Here is what the guidelines of the site say. I think the posts in question violate at least: malicious, false, inaccurate, abusive and defamatory. Prohibited content

Interesting and nuanced points of view to think about, but i still think that you must face the "troll" yourself instead of warning the moderator. But it is good there is an option for reporting.@tantejuut 'Facing the troll' is what trolls want. Its how they feed. OTOH simply reporting them is effective. |
