Why is abusive, negative content allowed?

There’s a certain member here, I think we all know who I am talking about, who continues to be little everyone else here with their rude and condescending remarks.  He continually tries to insult and creat strife and division.  It is not healthy for productive conversations or for the site.
Why will the moderators allow this poison to ruin the site?  They are turning people off from coming here and trying to start positive, useful content.

It’s a cancer that should be removed otherwise it’s going to have detrimental effects on this site.  Is that so hard to understand for the moderators?

Tammy is so incredibly helpful but I don’t understand why this negative behavior is allowed to continue and fester...

I've seen better ones, but still ok compared to many others'.
No problemo, just be careful how far down the back you’re patting.  Am I on a roll today or what?
glupson, there's always room for improvement, which personally I leave room for. *S*  Spouse is off on a 'plant hunt', which is her hobby; I'm doing some 'low-impact' defered maintainence this 'n that.  The weather is great, the type one doesn't write home about (since it makes them want to move here).  AVL is growing fast enough...

People have to face the offensive poster themselves and tell them what is wrong. Hittin the report button is kind of lame.
I've tried that, only to have my post dissected line by line and word by word to prove how wrong I was.  Childish and ridiculous, and every time it's happened, the "debate" had nothing to do with audio, or the OP question.  How does that contribute value to anything?
I mostly skip the "debate" after I have made my point. You can never win a pissing contest like that. But I don't like reporting and censoring, and I believe in freedom of speech. But it can be difficult sometimes in an online world to filter out all the junk.

“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

Mark Twain
Depending on the country, you might be disappointed to find that if he is in public space, that you cannot do that! Just because you don't like an opinion does not legally mean that it cannot be spoken.
This is not a public forum, so free speech does not exist here. I'm all for free speech too, but on an internet forum trolls jump in a mess things up, so free speech on an internet forum is really rare. So I don't mind giving up some of my free speech so I can participate here.

IOW moderation exists to keep the discussion relatively polite and on-topic, without trolling. Trolling BTW is any kind of post that induces anger, anxiety or the like simply for the sake of messing with people.

When everyone here signed off (clicked the 'Terms and Conditions' box) they did so with the full understanding that they gave up their free speech rights so they could participate on this privately-owned forum.

So this thread at least is helpful in that this is made clear; that there is good reason to report trolling (and since the moderators rarely participate in threads, the only way trolling will be stopped), name-calling, spam and the like. Just get used to the 'Report' button, and use it.

Given that we all have biases, how does one reliably differentiate between "trolling" and "posting controversial content"?

- I would say if you are creating a thread attacking or promoting a controversial position (no matter what side of the fence you are on) without bringing anything new to the discussion. Then you are trolling.

- If you create a thread whose underlying premise is to insult a portion of the community, no matter their beliefs, then that is trolling

- If you respond to a post and the basis of your response is a personal attack without adding anything new to the discussion, then you are trolling.

- If the basis of your argument is someone else has inferior listening skills, then you are trolling.

- If you bring up a persons (or your) political beliefs to either justify your or negate someone else's position, then you are trolling

- If you respond to a post, even "aggressively", but address what was in the post, clearly why you agree or disagree, provide some logic for your position, and don't insult the other person and make it personal, then you are not a troll, you are someone passionate about the topic.

- If you respond to someone's reply to your post, even if aggressive, but "reasoned", and don't take it personally (assuming they didn't), and you do the same, then you are passionate about the topic and a mature adult.

Unfortunately, in a short period of time I have felt the need to report a few posts to moderators. It is not that I can't take care of myself or I don't have thick enough skin, but because to respond to those people "appropriately" would not be appropriate on a public forum and would be a detriment to other people here and the topic being discussed. Their posts were not adding to the topic, were personal attacks, and in some cases were targeted trolling.

My personal experience (here and elsewhere), is that those first to resort to personal attacks, are also the first to behave like they are the victim in the interchange. When faced with an inability to logically and maturely defend their position, their reaction is to lash out and absolve themselves of responsibility.

The reality is that not all "conflict" is bad. Both exposing yourself to ideas that conflict with your own and being forced to defend your position are learning experiences if you allow them to be. It's okay to aggressively defend your position if you do it maturely, just prepared to be wrong.

@atmasphere good to know that trolling is not allowed here.  The person that I am complaining about, and the reason I started this thread, is because of a blatant troll.  There is no question about it, he is trolling us and many have fell into his trap.  I’m glad I started this thread now.

@heaufio123 Thank you for that well thought out and well laid out post!  It was very informative 👍

@atmasphere and @heaudio123. Interesting and nuanced points of view to think about, but i still think that you must face the "troll" yourself instead of warning the moderator. But it is good there is an option for reporting.

+1
Did I see the Kahuna of this site ask the 'report to person' to remove this thread on 6/6/2020 then delete his response?

@heaufio123 Thank you for that well thought out and well laid out post!  It was very informative 👍
I will go with you....

Thanks heaudio for this clear post….
there are 3 or 4 knuckleheads who seem to wait in ambush for one of the other 3 or 4 to say something.

Then they pounce and belittle any and every thing that those others say.
It's like a school playground and they sound pathetic.
@stereo5 , much better, Thank you very much for asking!  On a very low dose of pain meds now too which is really, really good.  Don’t see how people get hooked on that crap...

That Monty Python video was great!  Check out soundermn’s link if you haven’t already 😂
b_limo...after having a 'short stroll' (Rx'd, thanks) with 'that pain med'...

Rather easily, mho....

@asvjerry , try 90mg of oxy a day for 7 days straight and get back with me.   2 or 3 beers are great, having to put down 2 cases is not so great.

I felt like I was on Shutter Island while I was in the hospital...
I find it a little funny that the Moderator came on and said something to the effect of this thread was unnecessary and now the comment is removed and the thread is in the popular list.
What's more disturbing is that it seems like a lot of people share the sentiment, yet all the mods have done is first say the thread is unnecessary, and then just ignore it.  So, even though we all agree, nothing is going to be done about it.

Here is what the guidelines of the site say.  I think the posts in question violate at least:  malicious, false, inaccurate, abusive and defamatory.

Prohibited content
  • You will not submit content that is copyrighted or subject to third party proprietary rights, including privacy, publicity, trade secret, etc., unless you are the owner of such rights or have the appropriate permission from their rightful owner to specifically submit such content.
  • You will not post information that is malicious, false or inaccurate.
  • You will not post content that is sexually expicit.
  • You will not post content that is abusive or defames another member of The Service.

Interesting and nuanced points of view to think about, but i still think that you must face the "troll" yourself instead of warning the moderator. But it is good there is an option for reporting.
@tantejuut  'Facing the troll' is what trolls want. Its how they feed. OTOH simply reporting them is effective.
@atmasphere , True. But the downside is that you have to read them first, and that's a heavy price.
We are still animals. If you look behind the text, it is still fight, cry, run & freeze as our basic options against bullies. The report button can have a place, alltough it is not my preferred tactic in the online world.
As a newcomer to this site, my first two posts were removed for no reason. Nothing that broke your rules. Didn’t insult anyone, just made a joke. So I’m already put off by your community and moving on. Seems like you got a moderator on a power trip in here.
b_limo....Ahh, I'll pass on the option....I can stumble about without enough without 'assistance' as it is....;)

Spouse and I saw Shutter Island....reminded me of stumbling into an episode of The Prisoner series....

".....WTF is going on?!"  (And I was 'unaltered' at the time.....)
WOW!  Someone actually reads others posts, instead of simply posting his own egocentric BS.  '
...a bad habit of mine....I actually read...

Oh, and geo....I'm still intrigued by 'savage breasts'....;)

I know 'what' you meant....I hope....*smirk*
