Tube or solid state phono stage?
I’m worried a tube phono stage may make the vinyl too warm sounding and not dynamic enough. @stewartgr Dynamics only comes from the signal. If it seems to come from the electronics, its because of distortion. Its much harder to build solid sta...
Looking for 5AR4 rectifier tube most like solid state
@boxsoft That preamp should put nearly a constant load on that rectifier. So Voltage sag really isn't a concern unless the rectifier is shot. If the power supply is properly designed (bypassed), the character of the rectifier will be very heard ...
Diving into balanced
@mtbiker29 There's a fair bit of misinformation here. Since we've been doing balanced lines longer than anyone else, perhaps I might set the record straight: 1) the advantages of balanced lines have nothing to do with length whether 6 inches or ...
Should I get an SL-1200G
@abill The tricky variable is the platter pad. Technics uses one that's terrible. If you want to hear what their machines are about you'll need a proper platter pad. The best I've heard so far is made by Oracle. Felt, leather, cork and rubber just...
Pass XP-17 and Hana ML loading question
This makes sense. Different designs do act differently when subjected to RFI.
Pass XP-17 and Hana ML loading question
@ssg308 1000 Ohms is so high a value it can't be affecting the cartridge at audio frequencies at all. So this has to be how the preamp is reacting to RFI.
Pass XP-17 and Hana ML loading question
@ssg308 I don't doubt you although I am a bit surprised. Others have reported Pass Labs phono sections as not needing 'loading' ('detuning' is a more accurate term) resistors. Simple decrease the load till its starts working... I'd start with 1000...
Looking for a tube preamp that has xlr outputs.
I sent an email to Schiit audio and asked if the Freya+ was AES48 compliant, they replied yes. See Freya review Sidebar 3: Measurements here.😎 Mike @ditusa I read the article you linked but it only mentions that the pin out of the XLR complies...
Spatial Audio Raven Preamp
The Raven has split windings on the output transformer so both RCA and XLR’s can be used at the same time (the RCA output uses one-half of the secondary winding). So feel free to use to use the RCA output to power the active subs. @lynn_olsen T...
Preamp suggestions for Atma-Sphere Class D Monoblocks
Passive has no sound....so when a person says passive sounds like X....X = the natural sound of the power amp & DAC   @seanheis1 This has not been my experience. Sometimes you can get passives to work great and sometimes you can't. One of t...
Pass XP-17 and Hana ML loading question
I load mine at 47K and it works great. As you decrease the load it sees, two things happen. The first is the output level decreases especially as the load value approaches that of the cartridge itself but 100 Ohms will have no effect at all in th...
Atma-Sphere Class D… Amazing
@aw-agd, Likewise I would appreciate it if you didn't try to gaslight me.
Spatial Audio Raven Preamp
was just thinking sub(s) and your post said it better. I'm not sure how to attach a sub(s) to the Raven Pre? Must be an easy way?  @wsrrsw It appears there is a single-ended output in parallel with the balanced output. You'll have to check to s...
Spatial Audio Raven Preamp
@wsrrsw You have an ideal situation for using subwoofers. You might look into something called a Distributed Bass Array which is the use of 4 subs placed asymmetrically in the room so as to eliminate bass nulls and peaks in the room. This is often...
Atma-Sphere Class D… Amazing
I have the remote now, but considering downgrading to the manual volume if there is a lot to gain in terms of sound quality. @veerossi @armstrod If there's a difference its pretty slight. I've not noticed it.
