Who are your three favorite female singers?

I have favorites, but would like to hear from others.  Thanks
whatjd
@whatjd. I think a VERY good comparison. But there are so many great female vocalists, and my favorites vary over time.

Except Donna Jean.
At this time my three favorite female vocalists are:

Diana Panton
Monica Salmaso
Sandy Stewart
@tyray  Yes, she was a phenomenal singer.  Marian Anderson was comparable as a Black spirituals singer (American folk) as well as an outstanding opera and classical recital singer.
@whatjd I have 7 LPs and 11 CDs (some double LP sets) of June Christy.  I guess she is second to Ella in my 50's-60's female jazz collection (Ella-17 LPs and 15 CDs).
fleschler,   Thanks for listing Marian Anderson, just an outstanding singer and as I remember, really no one else quite like her.

Likely not for everyone or even on this list, but I do find "Somewhere In The Stars" by Rosanne Cash an enjoyable CD.   Worth a listen.

How do you do a list like this unless you break it down by genre? It is like comparing Freddy Mercury to Luciano Pavarotti, or Julio Iglesious. They are all phenomenal in their respective genres, but there are other greats in those genres as well.

Names that come to mind:

- Tina Turner
- Jennifer Warnes
- Elaine Page

And this confirms what I always suspected, that audiophiles can't count.
instead of listing my 3 favorites I’m going to list the 3 that’s in current rotation.
Somi
Lizz Wright
Beth Hart
Grab your headphones and give these ladies a listen.

Lizz Wright https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EMcG60myQw
Beth Hart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEHwO_UEp7A

For current rotation, that would be Lucinda Williams (I love her reimagining of the Sweet Old World album, now entitled This Sweet Old World), Mary Gauthier, and Patty Loveless.

There is a YouTube video wherein Iris Dement is accompanied on harmony vocals by Emmylou Harris and Joan Osborne, recorded live in a living room with great Bluegrass musicians. Wonderful.

shakira
jennifer lopez
beyonce knowles

oh wait... wrong thread, i thought this was for the three favorite female singers with big backsides... sorry :)
I generally have no interest in female vocals & certainly not the easy listening kind. Joplin is certainly a talent that comes to mind. Dale Krantz (Rossington) may be my favorite with her work with Rossington Collins. Nancy Wilson of Heart comes to mind as well. And Beth Hart among the blues players. The typical audiophile choices are not at all my cup of tea. But to each his own.

My 3 favorite female singer is Adelle, Katy Perry and Mariah Carey! I have a collection and compilation of their songs on my PC. I have downloaded them with the help of this article https://videopower.me/tips/ct-download/how-to-create-a-music-library/
Nina Simone

Sandy Denny

Rhiannon Giddens

Listen to Giddens sing Lost on the River from Lost on the River, The New Basement Tapes. Hauntingly beautiful.
Man you people are slipping. Only ONE mention of FREYA RIDINGS (most beautiful vocals today) and zero of the following I’m about to give you?
Pull up your Tidal or Spotify and then have fun topping these killers😋:

  1. The aforementioned Freya (Ultraviolet; Unconditional; Lost Without You)
  2. Haley Reinhart (Can’t Help Falling in Love)
  3. Halie Loren (Ode to Billie Joe; La Vie En Rose)
  4. Clare Teal (California Dreamin)
  5. Maria Mena (I Was Made For Loving You)
  6. Karen Souza (Creep)
  7. Lana Del Rey (Young And Beautiful; Carmen)
I’m throwing in one unknown male vocals that are absolutely beautiful IMO. HAEVN (We are; The Sea)
The first one is between these four: Marian Anderson, Katleen Ferrier, Christa Ludwig, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf...

The second one is between these 4: Barbara, Joan Baez, Jo Stafford, Amalia Rodriguez.

The third one is between these 4: Kirsten Flagstad, Gundula Janovitz, Elena Frolova, Elly Ameling.

Out of the contest for no rational or heartfelt reason: Billie Holiday....

Exluded from the contest because of his completely unhuman voice: Yma Sumac
Verify by yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1SIscNxwaI

The one which there is the much gossiping about his absence in this contest (does she sing or does she play?): Maria Callas.

The forgotten one but none the less one of the greatest singer, female and male, of all time: Ella Fitzgerald

Forbidden and not only banned, completely censored, cannot be put in a public stage except in dark place, the most erotical voice ever "Mamma Saturn" herself, Tanérelle Stephens, dont let your husband look at her nor your male children please.... She can induce long term hypnotic trance and obsession more than illicit substance :

«Too much names in your list, my mother is the mans’ voice»-Groucho Marx

« Where the f... is Oum Khaltoum ?» -Anonymus
The greatest female voices concert is Mozart "Cosi Fan Tutte"

This version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDqFkQRIqTU

As usual the libretto or story of this opera has no interest at all, close you eyes, dont look at the images at all.... Mozart here has written the "Art of the Harmony" for voices, like Bach has written the "Art of The fugue"....

This opera has no more in common with drama, it is pure melody beginning and ending in harmony... Mozrt is the only opera creator who dont give a damn about the story....

The best Opera of Mozart is the "Enchanted Flute"....Unsurpassed spectacle music+ theater ....

But his greatest work of Music pure"is " Cosi Fan Tutte" because here the voices are used like pure instruments, they dont speak no more they really sing....

For those of you tired of these lists sometimes almost written like they are coming from the same person picking the names in the same list and varying the "pickin"...

Try this one also , one of the favorite voice for one billion people on earth and unknown in America..

If you feel for a soothing, try this very old forgotten songs coming from your ancient Persian incarnation to heal your soul; not a contest winner of any kind, but which other singer will erase this intemporal, simple, modest, natural, immediate beauty :
