Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

@tomic601 yes, had a lovely evening with the Jennys, thank you for asking.   Grey’s Anatomy (a pretty good alto herself) was very impressed with the talent.   Yes, unmiked, A cappella, Parting Glass as encore.  Only two songs from their two first albums though.  Mostly new and unfamiliar.

beautiful voices.   To me Heather sort of stole the show.  Her live voice relatively more impressive and surprising compared to what I know of her from recordings.  Ruth most beautiful soprano clearly proven but I have to say she sounds far far better on records than in the room we were in.

the Paramount/Snitzer Concert Hall is one of Portland’s two largest music-purposed venues, seats about 2,800 (sold out - good for them!).  And it’s a long way from seeing them in a 200-300 seat theatre where we used to (right?).  This is where our absolutely great symphony plays and the sound has to be the worst of any major venue I’ve ever heard.  So, although the performances were impressive, the sound was poor at best and did not convey emotion.   I didn’t even cry during One Voice.

Glad we went.  But keep telling myself I shouldn’t attend that venue any more.  My living room system is infinitely better.

At least you got to see them! And btw, it's the Schnitzer auditorium or as some of us like to lovingly call it "the schnitz."

Arrived today,

Marianne Faithful "Broken English"

2013 remastered. Sounded awesome streaming.

Steve, are you back home listening to vinyl yet? I've seen you mention "arrived today" a few times, but I also see you mention that you are streaming. I can't tell if you are back home or still away.

Regardless, I hope you, and your family are well.

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

My original 1973 Charisma/Atlantic copy. Audiophile SQ.

I had purchased the Rhino 2014 Half-Speed Remaster a few years back and while it is noise free the SQ and especially the bass is not even close to being as good as my original copy.

With that said I continue to listen to my original slightly noisy copy.

Such a shame.

Thanks Tom. Still away from home but trying to keep up with all the (good to me) vinyl that's available. Trying to participate here as I can.

Hawkwind ‎– Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music (Charisma 1976)
~ Love this album from the Calvert era. Turn it up.

Just arrived….

Richard Thompson - Electric. New West Records 2013 2LP gatefold

I.D. Stamper - Red Wing (June Appal 1977)
Darlin' Corey - YouTube

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop 2011)

Tom Paley & Peggy Seeger - S/T (Elektra 1965)
~ This is a folk gem.

Steve, I have the original pressing of Marianne Faithful "Broken English" & like it. +1

How To Dress Well / The Anteroom

Can't believe I never heard it before Tim. I probably wouldn't have appreciated it when it came out.

Steve, still wishing you the best.  And of course, your mother too.  Hang in there.

Greg Allman - Laid Back   Glad that I got the idea to buy this, from this thread.

The Motels - S/T   Fantastic album, the music and the SQ.

Dave Mason - Alone Together Again   I recommended this a few weeks ago, after receiving it.  I still recommend it.  Really, really good!

Johny Guitar Watson - A Real Mother For Ya  I bought this after it first released in late 1977.  It's a very funk style album.  The guy can play, that's for sure.  Very good recording, excellent bass, and a good piece of vinyl.  Lot's of fun, turn it up!

Steve, I don't think it received all that much attention when released

David Bowie / Hunky Dory

Gillian Welch, Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs

Cassandra Wilson, New Moon Daughter

Steely Dan, Katy Lied

Roy Hargrove and Mulgrew Miller, In Harmony

Climax Blues Band / Stamp Album
1975 Sire

Well recorded Climax Blues Band LPs and SQ on Sense of Direction (mastered by Bob Ludwig) stands out.

@mammothguy54. What did I say that was not nice? I asked a question and got an answer. My, ppl seem so sensitive here.

Apparently this kind of info is useless to me but others seem to take gratification for whatever reasons.

For me, more pertinence  would be what one feels are the superior recordings. It is that which carries more meaning for me.

Otherwise this is like: "what'd you have for dinner last night".

Speaking for myself, I feel that all who post here are my friends. At the least, friends in music. I'm interested in what my friends are listening to and can ask them additional questions regarding pressing, SQ, label ...etc. Many get ideas on what to play if looking for something new or forgotten. Being part of this community is optional and only requires willing participation.

@arro222 No need to play psychiatrist here, it’s not needed or wanted! If you read my posts an effort is made regarding the SQ of the recordings I have played. If someone wants to stray off-topic I have no issue with that as long as it avoids religion/politics or vulgarity. Many would welcome you here if you decide to analyze the recordings played and not the posters.

Rhythm Stick with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Airto and others. recorded at Van Gelders. I originally had this on VCR and it was fabulous.

It is the best recording I have!

@1happyman

I am not certain if I have seen you post here in the past.  If not, welcome to this wonderful and enjoyable thread.  You will learn of many great musical recordings, some with good SQ, some with not so good SQ, and some with excellent SQ.  We often report on that but always the main interest is the music itself.  And your posting name, 1happyman, is THE BEST!  Please continue to join in the fun.

Arrived today,

Lucero "All a Man Should Do"

Jeremy Ivey "Invisible Pictures"

@slaw.. these are concrete reasons to me. I don't get it but I'm not built that way simply to communicate what my preferences are or what I'm doing at the moment to consider anything like that as "friendship".  I never joined FaceBook either and if I'm analyzing, its to understand the phenomena.

At least you put sane reasoning to it w/o being "flummoxed."

Now that I know, I may contribute to what I think are good recordings otherwise its plain I don't belong here.

My dogma seems to be too easily offensive.

Clyde Bernhardt & Jay Cole Harlem Blues & Jazz Band – More Blues & Jazz From Harlem (400 W. 150 1970s)

Just great. Get a copy if you can.

From earlier

Barbra Streisand – The Second Barbra Streisand Album (Columbia 1963)

Lana Cantrell – The Now Of Then (RCA Victor 1969)

Marianne Faithfull – Strange Weather (Island 1987)

Gisela May – Brecht Weill (Eterna 1966 mono)

@arro222 - This is a great thread (IMHO) and I’ve enjoyed it immensely for year now. I believe it is the most popular thread on AudiogoN, currently at 43K+ posts. I’ve become virtual friend with some of the regulars on this thread, and I enjoy the "community". I (we) welcome you, if you choose to participate.

The concept of this thread is simple - "What’s on Your Turntable Tonight?" That question has obviously resonated with many AudiogoN members. Some folks simply reply with what they have on their TT at the time. However, often posters discuss the merits of the recording they are playing. Often you will see responses regarding other's choices, and sometimes you’ll see folks jumping on a particular bandwagon - artist, album, genre or otherwise.

It’s all in good fun, not serious, and open to all. There are lots of regulars here, some newbies and an occasional driveby. You are most welcome the join, as a regular or as an occasional poster. We value your input, especially if it is regarding vinyl you are playing.

Peace Out! Enjoy the Music! And, "What’s on Your Turntable Tonight?"

Doc Evans / Knocky Parker / Albert Nicholas / Earl Murphy / Gene Juckem – Reminiscing In Dixieland, Stomps And Blues Vol. 1 (Audiophile 1957)

Translucent red vinyl from 1957 is gorgeous and sounds great.

The St. Louis Ragtimers – The St. Louis Ragtimers Volume 1 (Audiophile 1962)

Hubbard/Turrentine-In Concert 1974 CTi (RVG)

Been too long since I spun this. A record I consider the “Kind of Blue” of funky jazz. Someday I’ll spring for the Vol 1&2 from Speakers Corner, but for now I’ll just keep enjoying the hell outta this OP.

System is sounding really nice tonight. Hope everyone has a fantastic Friday.

Limehouse Jazzband – Rhythm Is Our Business (Stomp Off 1981) Side 2

The Byrds – The Byrds Play Dylan (CBS 1979)

Bought this when it came out. Famed for its bright and zippy mix, it's a classic. Brings me back to patchouli girls and skins.

@reubent  +1 and well spoken.

John Mayall - Blues From Laurel Canyon   Probably my favorite Mayall album, musically.  Too bad the production quality is not that great.  And mine is a UK pressing.

Fleetwood Mac - Kiln House  Reissue from "A Fleetwood Mac Production".  They did a nice job on this reissue.  The music brings back memories from high school.

Eric Clapton - Unplugged   A fantastic album and a rather good "live" recording.  I got the CD when it first came out but had no idea it was also released on vinyl.  Because of this thread I learned that, and bought it.  Much better sounding than the CD.  May "What's On Your Turntable Tonight" live on...

Rozhdestvensky conducts Shostakovich - ‘From Manuscripts Of Different Years’ : Scherzo For Symphony Orchestra In F Sharp Minor, Op. 1 / Theme And Variations For Symphony Orchestra In B Flat Major, Op. 3 / Scherzo For Symphony Orchestra In E Flat Major, Op. 7 / ‘All Alone’, A Suite Of Music To A Film, Op. 26 / Six Romances To Lyrics Of Japanese Poets, Op. 21. Soloists Ensemble of the USSR Symphony Orchestra & The USSR Ministry Of Culture Orchestra. Мелодия 1983 U.S.S.R. release.

Pretty darn nice

Joan Baez-Come From The Shadows Side 1

Bobby Short-Celebrates Rodgers & Hart Side 3

Muddy Waters-"King Bee" Side 1

Rachmaninov-Variations On A Theme Of Corelli(London CS 6822) Side 1

The Phil Woods Quintet-Song For Sisyphus Side A SQ Audiophile

Orleans-Let There Be Music Side 1 SQ Audiophile

ELO-A New World Record Side 1

Roseanne Cash-Seven Year Ache Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Orleans just edges out Phil Woods for the SQ crown. If Roseanne's vocals were a little more laidback the SQ crown was hers. Ms. Baez takes the weakest link SQ crown. I think this was her first recording for A&M?  The 4 other recordings just missed Audiophile Status.

Pete Townshend - "White City: A Novel"

I love this album. No idea if it is/was popular. I bought it back when it was release in 1985 and it's been in semi-regular rotation ever since. Was fortunate to also find a copy of the 12" 45 RPM Single of "Face the Face - Live From the Deep End". I also have a VHS copy of the short move by the same name. The Live version of "Face the Face" is from the movie.

BTW, the movie is available in two parts on YouTube if anyone is interested...
