What's a good alternative to SF amati g5?

There must be a good substitute for this really good speaker.  I don't wanna pay the additional cost related to tariffs, it was expensive enough.

I don't have a lot of pre 2000 photos... although probably 1,000. As digital cameras came into their own, this became possible. It has been amazing as it became possible to take photos of people... then at night, then people at night. I've got over 120,000 photos. I like to process them, then just move on. So, the photos shown are not curated sets... I just grabbed some... not at random but from contact sheet sized images.

@ghdprentice

Lots of nice pictures, and you like taking pictures of people which is really good because lots of times people take pictures without people.

Too bad they didn't let you inside North Korea those would also be pretty awesome pictures.

I remember visiting lots of places in the 90s before they had digital cameras. I visited Paris four times and never took any pictures.  I did go to Budapest and like you I actually did take some really nice pictures.  Remember seeing the chain bridge at night but the pictures came out fuzzy cause I couldn't hold the camera steady. bet you're happy you didn't take lots of slides, I've got a lot of those from my parents, I don't know what to do with them. Maybe they went to North Korea before it became North Korea. My father was in the Korean war

@tablejockey @ghdprentice nailed it. Look for an older model.  I’d be willing to bet that the Amati G4’s sound fantastic and you wouldn’t be disappointed.  I love my G5’s and last year when I bought mine, it was really hard for me to come up with the money.  If I was just now looking,  I couldn’t spend that much. What ever the reason for the huge price increase,  they’re driving people away.

All the best.

@ghdprentice - cool, I'll do that. Those are some really nice travelogue photos you've got there; you've sure been around!

I strongly recommend Wilson Benesch. Made in England and distributed in the USA by Aaudioimports. Very high tech in both cabinets and drivers. The extremely small amount of cabinet resonance allows you to hear fine micro dynamics missing on most speakers.

Foggyus91 beat me to it!

The Ktemas or the Accordo Essense perhaps.

That is some serious HiFi art there.

FWIW, I had the Serafinos in my system a few years ago and was looking to move up to the Amati. Both are fine speakers as far as I’m concerned. I auditioned the Il Cremonese and quickly decided they were worth the extra money. I did not find them to be fussy at all. They are more than just a bigger version, they are in the reference class, which is a step above. There is more bass and it is better controlled. Imaging and detail is better without losing any of the musicality of the SF sound. if you like the SF sound, both are excellent speakers, but to my ears the Il Cremonese justifies the higher price. It seems that there are bargains to be had on SF speakers in the used market at the moment so I would encourage you to listen to them if you have a chance. All of this is completely subjective and others may disagree, but I’ve had a chance to spend a little time with the speakers, for what it’s worth.

@ghdprentice - sorry for the off-topic, but you're a photographer? I am as well; I used to be a concert photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area through the 1970's, and quite a good one at that (everybody needs something they don't suck at!); I've got a website full of them; let me know if you'd like me to P.M. you with a link to it!

Rosso Fiorentino - paper and silk dome drivers. The tweeters are fantastic sounding. Italian, but I do not know of a recent price hike.

The SF Amati Futura is actually a couple of generations old now. While it is beautiful, and the prices are appealing, it is closer to the old SF sound and not as articulate or accurate as the current or previous generation Amati Tradition or Serafino. If that’s the sound profile you prefer - great. But, the newer models are more neutral with a bit more pleasant sparkle on top - without being bright.

@ghdprentice

I likewise always enjoy your posts. Knowing your background - it’s always somewhat amusing when you’re “informed” by some of the other forum participants of how server/streamers can’t possibly make a difference.

@emergingsoul

I’m in the process of upgrading my cabin system to the Il Cremonese. Yes, they are bigger, but the speakers seem relatively “unfussy” regarding placement (within limits). I know you’re concerned about the configuration, but perhaps talking to Albert Porter who has several pairs available used might help.

Best,

@emergingsoul how much are you willing to pay then? that sets a ceiling for which speakers to recommend

I was a senior director of IT for a global high tech company. So, well, I have been into IT for decades. Also, I traveled extensively and photography was an ongoing pursuit. So I have over 10 terabytes of photographs, which I used the monster tower to store and edit. I also used to simultaneously work on all sorts of stuff.

A few months ago I powered it on (30tb storage, water cooled cpu and huge graphics processor) and my Outlook mail accounts wouldn’t work as usual when I don’t power it up for a month. After an hour I couldn’t get a single one to work. That was it. I had it with Windows (I literally bought Windows 1.0... it  did not work at all... wasn’t useful until Windows 3.11). I use several iPads, iPhone and a MacBook. I bought the brand new M4 MacBook and as soon as the M4 Mac Studio... I replaced my windows tower PC and my 40tb NAS... and now am an all Apple shop. I also ditched the extra screens... I used to work at home in the morning and night... I don't have to multitask like I used to.

I posted a new photo of my office with the tiny more powerful Mac Studio and one monitor. Being retired has advantages... simplicity.

@ghdprentice

Always love visiting your system in our virtual world.  Took a look at your office system and I'm curious to know why there are three screens on your desk and what appears to be a fairly elaborate Desktop computer on the floor.  Curious what you do here, fascinating.

Actually I'm still looking for an upgrade to my current 802 d3s, comforting to hear that you like the traditional amati.  I don't think the ill cremonese makes sense with that very weird subwoofer at the bottom of the speaker.  If I go to another set of speakers I think I may entertain a used Lilium even though my room size might limit their full potential and the bass may be overwhelming and not appropriate.

It's tough upgrading from the 802 D3, not sure the 801 D4 makes sense.

Used Amati. A generation older but spectacular sounding- for ears that like SF.

Used prices are always  negotiable too.

Different model, but very nice, and close to the $40K

Stradivari. Winner for the price.
