What other Hobbies or Interests Do You Have?

Hello,
I was curious as to what other Hobbies or Interests do you have that also take up much of your time, energy and money or is Audio the only one for you?
Being a car enthusiast is definitely my first passion. Always reading about new cars and lusting after some classics.

For me, besides my interest in building a Audio System in the past few years, I am also a Car Enthusiast and Amateur Photographer (actually I hate using that term, more like a photo enthusiast because I consider myself a novice).
All 3 Hobbies have taken much of my time, energy and money. Sometimes I look back and think, wow, what have I done?
Could have saved all that money and time.
So I guess I should list my gear if I am talking about other hobbies:
Cars:

2016 Mustang GT 6 Speed (weekend car, a few modifications) and 2018 Subaru Forester XT (Daily Driver). Obviously both are performance oriented.

Camera Gear: Nikon D750 with Kit Lense, Nikon 50mm 1.8 Lense, Tamron 14-24MM 2.8G
Thnx

Prior to contracting Alfa Romeo disease I also had British sports car disease, my first car was an Austin Healy 3000 about which I did not know when the master cylinder goes out both the brakes and clutch go out simultaneously. I also has the displeasure of seeing my Triumph TR-7 catch fire from overheating.
I told myself when I retire I am going to have cards made up that indicate my two passions. Sailing/Fine Audio
I’m an internet junkie — discussion forums, repair videos of cars and electronics, music, current events, Facebook

Home repairs, both at my rehab home and a rental property I co-own

Exercise, I don’t have the knees to jog anymore, but I enjoying biking and going to the gym.

Following Ohio State football and basketball — Go Bucks!  Currently following #3 nationally ranked U. of Dayton Flyers basketball, including attending games with a friend (he’s in a wheelchair, so I help him).  Let’s Go Flyers!  Cincinnati Reds baseball, such as it is.

The past few years I been caretaker to my girlfriend’s brother, who was awaiting and received a heart transplant.  The girlfriend left but he is still with me.  He will move on soon to his own place, and I look forward to having the freedom to travel (anywhere but Vegas — my buddies love Vegas but I’m Vegas-ed out!)
Other hobbies/interest include.
High School Track and Field Coach (love track and Field)
High school National Science Bowl team coach
Restore classic cars
Avid Reader
wine
Travel
design/build amplifiers
restore/upgrade audio equipment
cycling
home construction
comics (no longer collect, but still fun)
music and theater (love dance, ballet, modern)
just remodeled my kitchen and taking cooking classes

geoffkait -- I've been an Alfa lover since time immemorial, but the only one I ever actually possessed was a rental sedan I had in Southern France about ten years ago.  And ya know, it may have been a bit under-powered but it was a heck of a good car. I felt like Tazio Nuvolari in the Mille Miglia.
Road cycling. I had a custom frame built in England and outfitted it with all Campagnola Record equipment. The thing was like riding a bicycle made by Ferarri. With the steep frame angles, it was a very quick handling bicycle. Coming down the canyon twisties was a thrill. It truly was a precision instrument. Very stiff frame made from Reynolds 753 tubing.

Kinda curious....who built your 753 ?

Had a Raleigh Team Pro 753 (Ilkeston) a while back...truly awesome bike...that tubing in the right builders hands was magic. Btw the Colnago C40, was in terms of the gross flex characteristics, virtually the same bike ( though thankfully with slack angles that made it a joy for centuries....and oddly enough a rocket in sprints...and still railed corners...contradictory ? yes, what can I say, Ernesto was a genius...as was Gerald O’Donovan who was the major contributor to the design of the 753 bike tube set ).

Now on a couple of Colnagos, a Ciocc, and a GIOS V107....and of course all Campy equipped.

And yeah raced for several decades....now just toodle putting in the miles in the country....

Love to hear you city boys. Ride bicycles, motorcycles, fast cars and BBQ. Pretty impressive. Enjoy the smog, traffic jams and living on top of each other.

Out here its woods, hiking, hunting, archery, snowshoeing, skiing, kayaking and fishing. Kids can still go out and play safely. No gun control whatsoever, except you can’t have your deer rifle loaded in the rig during deer season. Probably the safest state in the nation.
Hey, a few months ago I made subwoofer model comparison. used famous brands and nonames for review.
I compared the characteristics and attached the Amazon, where you can read the comments. I hope it'll be useful for someone
It is great to see so many cyclists. It is undoubtedly the best aerobic sport for aging humans.
I also had a Bianchi Infinito. Great bike. It had Campy Super Record EPS. I had to sell it. Mountain biking destroyed my right wrist. I am now the proud owner of the only Motec wrist arthroplasty in the US. I had to go to London to have the surgery. In the US they just fuse the wrist. The Motec is not available here. Swemac the Swedish company that makes the Motec has no desire to bring it to the US due to the liability. Think we have the best medical system?
Anyway, I had to keep cycling but wanted to take as much stress off my wrist as possible so I got a Specialized S Works Diverge Frame. The Diverge has a shock absorber in the stem. I built it up with Campy Super Record 12 speed EPS Disc and Fulcrum Carbon wheels. It is the ugliest bike I have ever owned but it rides great and the Campy disc breaks are the best I have ever used. I still have my original Merlin Extra Light. The best Ti welding ever done. It is indestructible. It has been all over the world and I can not bring myself to sell it. I also have his and her Richard Sachs frames. I think about building them back up but they need their rear drop outs re spaced.
Go tubeless! I have never had a puncture fail to seal. I do not even carry an inner tube any more, just CO2 cartridges. Just for fun I rode a punctured tire and put another 500 miles on it before I get down to casing and I never patched the puncture!  They ride better, are faster and you never have to mess with tires and inner tubes on the road. My wife and I have put a combined 4000 miles on tubeless without touching a tire lever.
Edzyn, IMHO Tazio is the greatest race car driver of all time followed by Fangio and Senna. The 1935 German Grand Prix is the greatest race of all time. Tazio wins it in an outdated Alpha against much more powerful German cars from behind! Keep an eye on Max and Charles!

"Ride bicycles, motorcycles, fast cars and BBQ........Enjoy the smog, traffic jams and living on top of each other."
We drive fast cars in the country.
Aside from our shared audio avocation, I used to be an avid motorcyclist: BMW, Kawasaki, Guzzi, Ducati. Still have my VFR800i but debating selling it... I figure next time I deal with gravity I might not bounce so well.
I've been collecting, repairing and yes, playing with Lionel Electric Trains (1945-1969) for 60 years or so.
Love shooting a round of Sporting Clays when I get the chance.
And I regularly enjoy an excellent whiskey with a good cigar!
Life does not suck.
Golf, chillin on the beach, and hanging with my best friend of the last 22years. She doesn’t understand my audio/music obsession but loves the results!   I have a small business that takes up a lot of my time so my hobby list is kinda short.
Table Tennis, Family, Movies, Junk Shops, possibly not in that order, is youtube surfing a hobby? Four Cats and a Dog. I watch Rugby on tv and have become strangely addicted to watching Kindig car restoral and upgrading. Audiobooks and Podcasts. Favourite shows are  BBC Radio 4s Moral Maze and David Mitchells The Unbelievable Truth.

  • Kinda curious....who built your 753 ?

The frame was built in Leeds England by Bob Jackson.

Prior to buying the custom frame, I rode a Schwinn Paramount for years. A car running a stop sign took care of that on an early morning ride. Totaled the bike, broke my shoulder and tore up the legs.

The insurance company offered to buy me a new bike as part of the settlement, and that started the quest for the Bob Jackson. I bought the Paramount back from the insurance company for $300.00 because I wanted all of the Campy parts off of it plus the hubs. Everything else was destroyed.

So, I ended up with the custom 753 tubed frame with all Campy Record equipment, with the exception of the hubs, which were Phil Wood sealed bearing hubs.

Because of chronic pain, and other health problems, I ended up selling the Bob Jackson to a collector. That bike had many, many thousands of miles on it, and it was still in mint condition. The guy just about dropped his teeth when he saw the bike.

He also bought a Schwinn Paramount track bike that I used for working out on the rollers in the garage on rainy days. That bike had won a state championship back in the late 50s. Fixed gear, no brakes, a bit tricky to ride on the street, but it was a blast.

The funny thing is, the guy who bought the bikes doesn't ride at all, he just collects. He has them hanging in his garage with a ton of other bikes, including the first bike he had as a kid. I was glad it went to someone who would really appreciate it.

If I still had the Bob Jackson, I'd have it hanging on the wall in the family room. They are, after all, pieces of art. :-)

Take care ...

Frank
Radio control....I'm into all scales of surface vehicles , mostly cars.  1/5 scale, 1/ 4 scale on and off road cars with weedwacker engines.  Also into electric 1/10 scale on and off road.  1/8 scale nitro powered....Gas powered boats too.

Also into full size cars and bikes.....   RC is a great father/son hobby....unfortunately my son found a new hobby, girls

Ahhh....yes indeed, a work of art from the golden age of Brit frame building ( complete with the gorgeous stove enameling that was standard in that era ... a friend has a Bob Jackson tandem that has a paint job to die for...simple colours that look a mile deep... ) ....Very sorry to hear injuries got in the way of continued enjoyment of the Bob Jackson.

My Raleigh 753 riding is also sadly behind me....managed to break the frame....I have this weird ability to snap rear drive side drop-outs...It now hangs on the wall in our sun-room alongside a custom Harry Quinn 531, and an absolutely sublime Limongi SLX ( all put to rest because of the aforementioned drop-out issue ).

taras22 ...

Do you remember the early Colnago bicycles with their elaborate lug work replicating the suits of cards? I loved those bikes. And talking about lug work, my Schwinn Paramount had beautifully sculptured chrome-plated lugs. I had just gotten the frame back from the factory with a new paint job when that idiot ran the stop sign and destroyed the bike. Bummer!

There were two elderly ladies at the Schwinn factory with over a combined 50 years of experience who were the only employees allowed to braze the Paramount frames. Their lug work was a genius work of art.

Frank
My next upgrade, Vittoria Graphene racing tires and those cool pink ultralight inner tubes.
Their lug work was a genius work of art.

Just went to the Waterford site ( Waterford is where I believe the Paramount master builders all landed ) and looked at the 22-Series Artisan Stainless page.....and good gawd those frames are gorgeous and in large part to some awesome lug-work. The art thankfully lives on.

My brother and I race NHRA . Its been our downfall for the last 20 years . I say that because its addicting as heck. And it’s a worse money pit than this audiophile thing. We race NHRA Superstock class. I drive, and my brother is crew chief, transportation cheif, cook and head bottle washer... LOL.. Car runs 9.60’s on a good day. Engine must maintain all the stock parameters . Bore, Stroke , Valve Size, Compression Ratio. Carb/Throttle body must all remain stock dimensions. Blowers, Turbo's, Nitrous, or any power adders are prohibited unless that item came on that particular engine from the factory in OEM trim . Taking a car that made 240 hp originally,( 1990 350 cu. in. TPI Camaro Iroc) and transforming it to make 640 hp with these requirements is a monumental task. But it keeps ya thinking.... and broke. We race in the eastern US, and our season has already started in Gainsville Fla. We missed that race because our engine is still in Charlotte being updated .. If this site would let you post video’s, I have some in-car ones that I think you would enjoy, but not possible to post here

riding my touring bicycle a Soma Saga w/tubus racks/Ortlieb bags everywhere I can possibly go at 10 mph which is fine by me anymore.  My fave bike was a Romic 531 w/full campy back in the 80's.  Never liked a Serotta Ti fitted bike I bought 20 yrs ago.  The list of usta do's gets bigger and bigger...BMW cars (too complicated and expensive for me now), motorcycling (BMW & Guzzis - totaled my R100RT in '13 into a wild hog), cave diving back in the 80's and 90's north florida and yucatan.  Now it seems its doctors appointments and early to bed.

I enjoy downloading porn. Also sometimes scavenge around for old abandoned refrigerators and turning them into a playhouse for kids. Its hard though. The ones with the secure latch are getting harder and harder to find.
My wife still uses sew-up/tubular tires on her Campy-ed out Colnago C59.  I went to clinchers when I heavily crashed my Time Edge Translink about ten years ago and replaced the twisted-up steed with my fully-built Bianchi Infinito.  Ya know what?  I don't miss 'em.

So, posting two links to pictures of bicycle frames applies to the above, how??

Love me some Harmonicas,
 Guitars, Acoustic and Electric,
Small Tube Amps.
I just sold 12 Amps and a few Cabinets to get down payment money for a car.
Of course when I sold the Amps I did not need a car,the universe has a way of knowing when I get extra Cash!!
I did sell them to my son-in-laws cousin to help him get some stock buildup for a Music Store he is opening next month.
Radio Control-Planes,Helicopters but sold most of them.
I still Have my Trex 450 Electric Heli.
Quadcopters[2]
Most all of my RC stuff ais now electric.
I have a Hawker Seafury Gas and maybe a Nitro or 2 stashed away.
Been into the Nitro cars,Trucks and Monster Trucks.I never made it up to 1/5 Scale but..all sold.
Had Boats..LOTSA Work!=Sold

  • Love me some Harmonicas ...
Me too. Been playing them since I was nine and still haven’t mastered the darned things. I listen in awe to the likes of Charlie McCoy, Robert Bonfigileo, Toots Thielemans, and Lee Oskar.

Heaudio, stay away from Schwalbe. I had too many punctures. I have run Hutchinson Sector 28's and 32s with great results. Orange Seal is the absolute best sealant. I ran one 28 down to casing 500 miles after it punctured and sealed. I never took the tire off to patch it! Putting the tires on is just like a car. You use tire levers then you rapidly pressurize the tire to snap it onto the bead. Once the tire is mounted you take out the valve core and fill the tire with 60 cc Orange Seal with a syringe then put the valve core back in and pump up the tire. I use 50 psi in the front and 75 psi in the rear. My wife uses 50 in the front and 65 in the rear. We routinely do gravel roads on these tires no problem. In three years my wife has punctured once and I have punctured twice. All of them sealed fine and usually you do not realize you have punctured until you get off the bike and see Orange Seal on the seat tube.
Although you can use regular clincher wheels that have been taped to seal the spoke holes it is better to use a tubeless rim which has a bead.
IMHO Campy/Fulcrum makes the best tubeless wheels because of their MoMag system. No spoke holes, no tape, no leak! The nipples get a magnet screwed into them then are dragged to their location with an other magnet. The magnet is taken off then the spoke is mounted.

There is one sport I have not seen yet. Anybody turn wood? There must be some wood turners out there. I forgot to mention I am a fellow lathe junky.
mijostyn ...

Yes, thank you. I love those guys.

Here is THE Robert Bonfiglio CD to own. Super nice recording, great group, and Bonfiglio’s genius: Recorded live at the amphitheater at the Grand Canyon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXiQbV5qY-k

Here is THE Lee Oskar album to get. Fantastic Eastern European sound using a B-minor harp. The recording is first-rate and a great demo disc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKLjLFHSnqc

I attended a harmonica clinic put on by Lee Oscar years ago. The guy was fantastic. He taught me how to play using the lip-blocking technique, which finally allowed me to bend notes. I was always a tongue blocker and could never figure out how to get the blow and draw bends properly. One little session with Lee and I had it.

Here’s another great ... P.T. Gazell.

@loki1957....*S* Ah, a romantic....I hope....*L*

If your spouse is your hobby....what are you to her?! *L*

(Just a tease, please....no weird inference implied....;)...)
Pardon....I'm just having a 'reaction formation' to all the 'biker' posts....

...all these visions of Lycra tights, stuffed with....well, Hopefully 'skinny butts' but fearing the opposite.....*LOL*

Following up on my car post and having the entire car wrapped in paint protection film (and the great advice here not to do it myself) I finally found someone at a reasonable price. He is doing such a great job so far, I made a 45 second video of him wrapping my 911 if anyone cares to see it, with my car up on ramps and with the headlights removed.

https://vimeo.com/397358202/3f94b9661a
Yes, it takes a very steady hand with an Exacto knife. Black is a tough color to wrap also. Any bubbles show up white. What year is it 2004?
Asv, us cyclists have an expression, eat to ride, ride to eat. You ride through Tuscany then stuff your face. Can you tell how skinny my butt is?
Much to the dismay of my budget I seem to choose hobbies that have the ability to easily drain ones bank account. Besides the money pit of audio I also dabble in astronomy, bicycling, photography, and rc helicopters. Audio is by far the biggest money pit.
