The best speaker you ever heard?
In my opinion, the speaker is by far the most important part of the audio system. After all, it is the only part you hear. OK, the other stuff really matters a lot, but without a great speaker... No go.
I am a bit 'speaker-obsessed' I guess, and now I am wondering: What are the best speakers you have ever heard, and what made them the best?

Which amp set up was it with? Bob, I got the amp back, but no speakers yet. Hopefully soon. AS you know it's been a while, lol. I am itching at getting everything back into the system. I have decided to sell off my Basis 1400 TT with Gingko base along with my factory rebuilt and updated Rhea though. I'm also going to put the Synergistic Research Powercell Ten mk 2 with the Tesla cord, on the market too. Time to pare down a bit and go from there. Time to move away from analog as it's hard for me to get up and change albums sides now, so there's that. As for the SR piece, I want to just go back to wall power and then refigure things. It's a great piece as you have heard, but I have dedicated circuits and it already is pretty clean. I may up the ante eventually and get the Niagara power unit as I have heard the 7000 and it's killer. |
Honestly I don't remember exactly but I believe they were Ayre MXR Twenty monos. John could tell you. He was also using another jawdropping piece of equipment the Ayre pre KRX Twenty. Which is what he was demonstrating for me even though he knew I couldn't afford it. It was just some time spent listening to music and demonstrating the quality of Ayre products. I remember that because of its astonishing sound and the, ahem, interesting price. |
gottcha. That is the best preamp I've ever heard. I've heard it in so many different systems at houses as well as stores. I'd start a full system with that pre if I had to. I'd use a lesser amp like a 5 series if needed as to me, it's that much of a difference in sound quality. Yes, it probably was the MXR that he had on for you. I can't wait to hear the 9 series. If set up properly, those extra bass units will really smooth out any room. |
In my system, the Monitor Audio Silver 8. They're not perfect by any means, but the best out of anything under $4k that I've auditioned. They do require breathing room and quality power and don't like to be paired with bright/forward sounding amps. The midrange is excellent for the $$$. Easily better than the $5K Golden Ear Triton One in a moderate sized room. |
I never shared the general disdain of other Audiopiles towards 901's. I heard a pr once that was turned backwards so most drivers were pointed toward you and the single driver to wall that sounded good . I think they have had some other slight mod but I disremeber what . I had a Bose System in Nissan Maxima that used 901 drivers, sounded damn good . |

Just wondering, could the slight mod have been that the speakers were not attached to the cables? |
The Quatro's arrived and are breaking in nicely. Loving the sound. Just amazing all around speakers. They are set into the corners right near the wall. The bass and size of the soundstage is amazing. Best speakers I've had in the house. Probably, for me, the best buy in high end audio IRT speakers. The sweet spot in Vandersteen's line. |
Personally, I love Megaboom 3 and JBL Xtreme 2. They're both solid and stylish speakers. Of course, UE's speaker is definitely superior, but Xtreme 2 seems to be nice too. I'd recommend Review Position if you're planning to do research and head-to-head comparisons. They're really good and know what's what. |
First of all , i think that it can not stand alone as there are other factors into this than just the speaker itself . And many of us might not be so fortunate as to hear " The best speaker " with a lot of different amps. and cables to make sure its still the best. And also what brands do one have in the area where one lives. ! Well apart from all that the best i heard so far has been Wilson Audio Sasha 2 |
The revel salon2 was the best sounding system I heard til I bought them and brought them home. now I disagree with the OP and while speakers are important all the pieces of the puzzle have to fit in a hi rez system for it to be musical.Bingo Steve. Currently, the "best" speaker I have owned/heard is the Trenner & Friedl RA fronted by a Traumatic 300B amp. |
Tannoy Westminster driven by Cary 805 monoblocks. Not my system but it's what turned me onto Tannoy and Cary and now I own lesser models of each. Even the lesser models are nice. I also love JBL L300s, and believe it or not the Paradigm Signature S6 speakers that I have sound better than any other speaker that I've tried in that particular system/room. They've lasted longer than any other speaker that I've owned. |
Watson Labs Model 10. Auditioned in latter 1970's. A visually striking very large speaker. Tweeter and mids set in a separate enclosure atop a large bass unit with two drivers. Sound: room filling, accurate, large sound stage, tight bass. WOW. Should have bought a pair, but $ too much for my budget. I may have dodged a bit of a bullett though as the tweeter/mid-section had some gas filled chambers that over time likely would have leaked. Oh well. I was happy with Dan D'Agostino's satellite/sub speakers. First ever in the US at the time. Still have them, but they take a backseat to my 1986 Thiel CS2's. |
In the market is available many types of wireless speakers and people have confused before buy speaker - " who is best for him " I want recommended Kwinson Speakers have long time battery backup with smart features. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
All speakers being compromised it's hard for me to single out "best." But in terms of realism, the most realistic sounds I've ever heard from a speaker came from the MBL 101s (one time at a reviewer's house, another at a dealer). It made all other speakers I've heard sound like they were just "trying" and like collections of boxes and tweeters. That's not to say the MBLs are perfect of course, just that when playing the right material I haven't heard anything that real. |
For me many speakers can sound marvellous function of their embeddings in the acoustical field of the room....All speakers are not equal for sure, but most speakers were used in badly acoustically controlled room.... Then unsatisfied people upgrade the speakers instead of treating the room … The rest is audio reviews and marketing history... :) |
