@rolox Thx for your reply. I misjudged the level of your system. If I was 30 years younger(still in my 20's) I would make an attempt at a DIY project but now I lack the patience/skill and desire to take on such a task.
Prospectives on Chi-Fi
Putting politics aside this is a good opinion piece and I hope puts some things in prospective.

@dayglow my speakers are DIY, fully horn loaded. Think Klipsch LaScala on steroids (read: better, bigger, meaner) with active crossover. I’ve been mentioning those many times ;-) also two large JMLab / Focal subs. Very impressive sounding system and sounds much better than what it costs! ^^ Recently snagged 4 huge Shroeder diffuser panels at a flea market (the seller thought those were old radiators ^^) and wow, there you go, HIGH END system with peanuts money! (I’m quite proud of it as you may have noticed) cheers |
@rolox I assume you have put close to $5k in your main system? You never mentioned what speakers you own. Did you ever consider the Quad Artera series. Quad is one of the few Chinese made electronics/speakers I would consider. You get synergy without the complexity and Quad will always maintain some resale value regardless of where its manufactured. |
Pretty much every electronic in my system is made in China. Aside from the preamp (DIY Pass B1 on a true Pass PCB, but I’m sure some of the Chinese PCB copies are just as good). I own a Chinese DAC (Gustard A18) with a Chinese made transport (Audiolab 6000CDT). All my class D amps are Chinese External linear PSUs are also Chinese Hell, even my cables are (Xangsane SP9001Ag silver cable, various power cables, and knock off "Odin" speaker cables) Oh, my active crossover (Sublime Acoustic K231) is made in the USA! ^^ So far (and it’s been years) I never had the slightest reliability issue. Also have a SMSL SU-8v2 DAC and SMSL amp in my bedroom system, same same, works great, sounds great for the price, and no issues whatsoever. There was a time when I was using second hand stuff, from USA / UK / Japan, and reliability was a major PITA with some, because of age mainly - but yeah for a given budget one can only go so far. I will buy Chinese again, for my meager budget the price / quality ratio is impressive. |
(who is Lord Melton?) OK, here's my 2 cents. In my audio journey, first decades ago in big 2-channel gear, and in the last 10 years, all desktop audio & headphone audio, I tend to follow talented designers and the companies they build to realize their own designs. And looking around my home office I see 3 examples of that:
I'm less concerned with the nationality of a designer than with his/her originality and personal commitment to the work. So far gear from China has served me very well, indeed. |

Just received this delightful message from @jeffstrick . As if we needed verification of the type of person he is:
"No was only doing this to bug the hell out of dicks like you. I spend most of my time on forums where real audiophiles hang out. Not poor posers like you. Enjoy your fiefdom. @audiobydesign |
Hmmm. Days gone by and crickets from jeffjerryjuanchicagoearlpunk. No denial, no rebuttal, no refutation. Laying low I suppose hoping this gets forgotten. Unsolicited advice; If you're so desperate to be on this forum that you constantly have to make up new personas after being consistently banned, how about this; act like an actual adult and lay off the childish, abrasive insults and grade school mentality. But I admit given your track record, that may well be an impossibility. |
Putting politics aside and just looking at the facts, this ship sailed a long time ago, when western based multinational corporations saw an opportunity to destroy unions and make products abroad and sell them at back home at a dollar on the cent of production labor. Anyone paying attention could see that capacity to make toasters and irons could quickly turn into the ability to make quality hifi gear, computers and sophisticated communications gear, and ships, planes and bombs (sorry about that dark turn). Chinese factories have been building excellent consumer and midfi electronics for offshore brands for decades. And now as noted in the original reference, many of those old line hifi brands are now owned by the Chinese. If you look at the quality and performance of current Chinese designed and built gear, it is hard to fault their products in 2023. It’s amusing to hear people now complaining about what many of us saw at the front end of the offshoring wave. I buy what I want and can afford. Just like s bunch of other people. A long time ago I got over the fact that many of the components inside the products I buy are made in China, if not entirely. Before riding your high horse here, look carefully at the components and source country of everything in your home and office. kn |
I don’t care which country the component is from, I only care about price, performance, sometimes a company’s longevity and product reliability. I don’t penalize people for the government they are ruled under, most are not democratically elected so they have no choice. I don’t blame the Russians for what Putin does, likewise I don’t do the same for China. Also, there are a lot of illegal clone products manufactured in China. I don’t penalize legit Chinese companies who have nothing to do with this.

Also, @jeffstrick you state you’ve had your Thorens since 1978 yet in another post you declare that you’re 27 years old. Time travel? George Santos has got nothing on you guys. |
How about this tidbit: You, jeffstrick, jerryg123, and skypunk all own a Thorens td145 with a custom plinth, verified by a quick search. An astonishing coincidence! And that’s just one piece of equipment that can be cross referenced to you all. Honestly pathetic. |
