My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

WC - would you consider the Simaudio 850P? May be difficult to get your hands on I guess.  Have read some interesting comparisons to the ayer kx-r twenty.
Ok, one full redbull on ice. Not as tired as last night, amplifiers baked the powercords all day and night since yesterday so HERE WE GO. Let’s try these cords again. I’ll report back.
WC, You haven't mentioned if your system (without those ridiculously expensive power cables) has taken you to the next level in sound. Is there something missing? Or are you looking for changes in sound to see if there is something else that will tickle the Neoliths more? Those Block Audio Monoblocks in Class A should be at the top of the chain in terms of what that speaker needs. I know you mentioned Solid State Preamplifiers. But what about going the other way and having a preamp with tubes that are more on the tube side than the AR Ref 10? I'm just curious as to your logic on this. Not to say that the sound will be "off" with a solid state preamplfier, but it would make for a slightly harder presentation. You don't know unless you try. What about the Luxman preamp? On the tube side, I'm not an authority on what is best. With a week or so of listening to you're existing system, do you think it needs change?
Impressions with the sigma NR on the block audios:
-vocals have less “muffling” effect
-more music is retrieved from the background
-at times I sense a little more depth in the presentation. Almost like an “echo” effect

what am I trying to achieve? I’m trying to elevate the amplifiers which in turn means I elevate the neoltihs. What am I missing? I don’t think Im missing anything really. I’m just now on a mission to see how much better these speakers can get and since my Monos are here to stay, I will either get the matching preamp or try a different source at some point.

@whitecamaross

In reading your posts, I’m not totally clear - are you comparing the sigma NR’s to the stock cables or to the WW cables?

I agree about wishing that cable manufacturers would do break in on the cables, so that a few day’s in one’s home is all that is needed to check it out. If it truly takes 1000 hours for some cables, then the 30 day eval doesn’t quite get you there, even if you run them 24X30. I guess that’s one reason why I buy used cables whenever I can vs. new cables.

Dave

Hello Thezacks, in my system, cables seemed to break in a little faster than components... Typically breakin time has ranged from 350 hours to about 600 hours.

Would be nice if cable manufacturers were able to break-in their cables before shipping.... But I do not know how realistic it is. Let's say thata manufacturer committed to break-in all its power cords.... Let's say that they ship an average of 20 PCs per day and the committed to break them for two weeks. To maintain shipping throughput they would need 20x15=300 PC Break-in circuits... And then there are balanced and single ended ICS, digital cables, speaker wires, and so on..... The infrastructure would become enormous. Furthermore, this company would not be able to uptik production and maintain policy without adding break-in capacity.

Definitely, prices of their cables would have to go up to cover the additional equipment, real estate, and the cost of immobilizing product slated for break-in.

Of course, this manufacturer could offer the break-in as a premium service.... But I do not know what percentage of customers would be willing to spend more for the product while having to wait longer for delivery. I know that cable cookers can be used to accellerate break-in.... But I have heard mixed opinion on their effectiveness.

Regards, G.

@whitecamaross - What do you think of the Vandersteen Speakers? Vandersteen 5A and Quattro Wood CT? I heard them at a dealer and I felt they are amazing. Wondering what you think about them?
Karurravi: I don’t personally like vandersteen. They are too warm for my taste and lack that sizzle that I love.  However, I’ve never owned them and I speak only based on me listening at a dealer. That said, Wilson audios gave me the same warm tonality at a dealer but I liked them alot when I had them in my home.

Re: cable......there is something very right going on with Doug Schroeder's experimentation of cables......If you check his posts on this site and really try it, you won't be disappointed.   ( I know it doesn't make sense, but....)
How much does WC owe for the therapy session above ? . Is he a lesser audiophile for trucking through gear ? I say no he is not . Enjoy the ride WC
So of course some people are always going to critique me for doing what i do. Some say I’m never happy or that i buy and sell gear (which have to do if i want to keep trying stuff out) and other dealers who just love me because i am liquid and capable of buying stuff on the spot without wasting their time. Yes i know there are quite a few dealers that follow my thread with whom i have done business with multiple times and some dealers have reached out to me to offer me some of their trades for good deals. Why? because i don’t have to get on the phone for 3 hours talking about a product and waste their time. If i am looking for an item and that dealer has it, all he needs to do is throw me a deal and i am paying for the item on the spot.
Some manufacturers (more than one) have a problem with people like me because i go through a lot of gear which means that their product will most likely be sold online (not always the case) when i am done with it and they just hate that.
Well, guess what? everybody’s gotta eat right? yes, dealers gotta eat as well. How about if some of these manufacturers buy back their own gear so it doesn’t end up here on audiogon? ohh that is not feasible right ? then why complain ? So do you actually think Jay Leno pays full retail on his cars? how many cars do you think he buys and then sells? He clearly enjoys cars so what is the big deal? i am a little guy here who enjoys the this ride and as long as the used market exists, i will continue to try more gear. I can only IMAGINE the heat i would take if i were to create a youtube channel giving my real input on everything i buy. I’d probably get sued for all i know.

Anyhow, what am i missing? i could not tell you what i am missing right now. I am curious to find out what is it that i am missing out by adding more pieces. So far, i love the progress i have made with the Neoliths and by the way i dialed them in more last night. i played with withe position even more and i am getting more holographic imaging than before. By the time i am done with the Neoliths, i will be able to talk about how to set up such a big speaker in a small-medium size room. i have learned A LOT with them. They have made me much more proficient at understanding the challenges with the room and speakers.
Interestingly enough, i have someone who wants to trade me his YG Sonja 1.3 plus cash on top for my Neoliths (he owns the Martin Logan statement system as well). I don’t really feel comfortable spending this kind of money on any speaker. The reason why i selected the Neoliths was because i am a fan of panels (i have owned all their current electrostatics) plus i knew this speaker is highly controlled on the used market. It is not the speaker that shows up used (only one pair listed in Europe in the last 4 years) so i know i won’t have to be competing with others to sell once i decide to part ways with them.

WC, your manifestation of audiophilia nervosa may be  little different from mine -- Actually we might be at opposite but equally frantic ends of our shared obsession.... Yet, our Nirvanas are equal sources of great joy to us.... Continue on your path, friend WC... All Steam Ahead... Damn The [verbal] Torpedos!!! G.

WC , I would make the YG Sonja 1.3 deal. Endgame dynamics speaker. State of the art aluminum casings. Lighting fast precise mids and highs. But thats just me.

Hello MrD.... No, you are not launching torpedos.... yours are more like signal flairs, meant to point things out.... Yet, our friend WC is the ultimate explorer, as I pointed out several weeks ago.... His quest is not that to discover that idyllic valley where to settle and build his homestead... His quest is for the qquest itself.... To discover what's behind the next hill.... And there always is a mysterious and ever alluring next hill beckoning in front of him.

Guido, thank you for understanding me. WC knows I mean no harm. This is my number 1 thread. Enjoy ! MrD.
Mrdecibel,
i didn’t take anything personal from
what you said above. Don’t worry :)
Techno:
i have gotten very far with the Neoliths. They sound fantastic now. Actually I’d be afraid to move them out of here because I don’t know how shocking it will be if I put a smaller speaker here that doesn’t give me the immense wall of sound I’ve been hearing over the past few weeks. It’s like driving a Yukon Denali for a month and then you are forced to go into a Chevy Malibu in terms of comfort....

Life is a journey, not a destination.

..and for some (most of us?),audiophile-life is a journey,not a destination....BUT,

like MrD insinuates, (recommends?),sometimes ,as much as I can, I have to sit back and enjoy what I pieced together....and save the critiquing for another day.

My only concern right now is being the first poster on page 100 of this thread.
I don't think that there is anything wrong with WC trying to squeeze the last drop of juice from a squeezed orange....this is his game and we enjoy following it.

In the meantime ,I think,OBVIOUSLY,his system is world class.

..and is surely enjoying the music.

Thanks mike. You couldn’t have said it
better. I AM trying to squeeze more  out of it.

WC, I didn't want to upset you with my question of what you want to get out of your system.
I think I wanted to hear that.....
The Block Audios are your reference for now as an amplifier. And get other amps to compare them to. I'm glad that your are talking about keeping them. AR Reference 10 is also a great reference preamplifier.

I'm also trying to extract more of what you have been hearing, now that you have possibly one of the best systems I could possibly ever dream of owning.

The Block Audio Preamp is just WOW. Could make for better sound. If it were me, the Block Audio preamp would be on the audition list without question. Sorry, once again if I made you mad.
Bigddesign,
Unfortuntately there is zero chance of me auditioning the block audio preamp. I have to pretty much buy it blind folded and hope that it has more synergy than the ref10.
As far as block audios, they are not going anywhere unless there is another pair of monos that can come in here and do a better job with my neoliths.

No amps will beat the Block Audio except perhaps Ghyphon Mephisto monos or Boulder 3050 wich are out of reach.
whitecamaross
after all of this time, are you going to settle with the ML speakers? Is there another brand/model on  your radar in 2019?
Happy Listening!
There are a few amps I look forward to trying with my Neo's and comparing to my Luxman M-900 in mono.

Constellation Taurus
D'Agostinio Progression Monos
Pass Labs Xs 300

Let's hope there are some amazing deals on AG this year.

However I will say that it might just be the difference between a wine that Wine Spectator gives 97 points another they give 95. Are you really going to taste the difference? Maybe, maybe not but only one way to find out and that is to drink up.

I heard the Gryphon Audio Colosseum Power Amplifier driving Vivid Audio Giya G1s and thought it was the best system that I’ve ever heard...natural, dynamic, speakers completely disappeared, outstanding imaging, soundstage just perfect(height, width, depth), and very musical. That system is my new standard. If I had the money that would be my last system.
@jafant  right now i am to keep going with the Neoliths. i really would like to try the focal Utopia line, maybe a wilson alexia 2 or Sasha DAW.

@thieliste I agree with your statement in regards to block audio.

@ricred1  i can totally see why you feel this way about the system you heard. Vivid audio is impressive and it sounded pretty balanced throughout. i remember hearing my G1s with the diablo 300 and it was just so amazing and complete top to bottom. I really did not hear anything lacking.

@atownkeep i like your potential future amps. The pass xs300 amps run brutally hot. i had the xs150 and the heat was just unbearable so i can only imagine the xs300s. Let's not forget that you will need  another preamp because the c900u wont work with the xs300.

Were the Pass XS150 amps hot during idle or under load? If under load, I’m wondering if the XS300 would not get as hot, since they would not get pushed as hard?

Dave

p.s. did I make page 100?
@mrdecibel yes the block audios give off heat but they are nowhere near as hot as the pass amps. Not even close.
The Neoliths are indeed big but the vivid audios projected the sound very wide just like the Neolith but let’s keep in mind that they don’t really interact with the side walls as much. Plus, these are panels so it’s like comparing apples to oranges. Very different presentation.

@thezaks the xs150s were hot just idling. All 4 chassis run hot as hell. Go to your kitchen, turn on all 4 burners on your stove and come back in 30 min. That’s how the xs amps run. They are furnaces.
Post removed
Yikes - that hot at idle for the xs150s?   You almost need a separate environmentally controlled room for those puppies.

Dave
WC,
Just curious.  Since you just said you like sizzle, how does the Plinius rate against the Block for sizzle and sparkle?  I get the impression from you that Block assets are fullness, roundness, dynamics, especially for bass/midrange.  Maybe Plinius is more oriented for sizzle/sparkle?
The Plinius 103 has sparkle and nice control on the woofers. It has awesome attributes BUT the moment you play the block audios you’ll be able to expose the kinks in the Plinius armor. You hear how much less floor noise the blocks have, how much more information the Plinius doesn’t deliver. Lastly, the bass control is unmatched. The only amp I want to throw up against these block audios are the momentum m400s. I want to play torture tracks through them. Basstronics for the bass shootout, Diana Krall/ Karen Souza for the battle of the midrange and for highs there are many many songs I can choose from.
Just a technicality for reference... pure Class A bias amps run at their full rated Class A power at all times. When actively driving speakers a portion of that rated power is dissipated by the speakers instead of by the amp. As a result the amps will run their hottest when idling, not sending any of their power to the speakers. As you play your speakers at higher volumes more of the rated power output is dissipated by your speakers so the amps will actually run cooler. If a Class A rated amp is not putting out a significant amount of heat when on but not driving a speaker then it's either some type of dynamic bias system which is not maintaining its high level of bias at all times (by design) or it's not truly Class A in operation.

I think you are on a record breaking pace!

@ron17 wow man....  I appreciate the stats you gave me there. I didn’t plan for this to go so far and pretty much catching up to threads that started way before mine.
I suspect we will be at page 200 by 2020. Let me tell you, block audio is amplifier #375 on my list. Insane to say the least.
@bill_k You are correct about class a. That’s how these amps work. That said, man I don’t remember the xs pass amps ever getting cooler by playing them. They were just insane and my living room would get toasty to the point that your lower legs would begin to sweat and I sat about 12 feet away from them !
